I find that encouraging and keeping kids excited is the way to ensure trad archery will cary on to the next generation. My girls are not very interested in hunting, but they love to shoot the bow, and go to the shoots all spring and summer. Here is a moment in the yard yesterday.

Don't get any better than that Jerry.
That is priceless Jerry. Way to pass it on! A happy and healthy new year to you and your family.

Trad deer hunting with kids is especially tough since it is such a low odds endeavor. I had success keeping them busy with binoculars, calls and shooting at things i would never shoot at otherwise, like squirrels.
I never managed to take a deer with one of my kids next to me, but did shoot over one and had some great hunts together that they still talk a out.
Oh, dont forget snacks either!
Neither of my daughters were all that interested in hunting but they clearly loved the time with dad.
That's awesome! The excitement kids have is so funny when they are enjoying themselves. Besides that I celebrate in almost exactly the same way when I shoot well :)
I have one daughter who is 3 and another on the way. I've been trying to keep my daughter engaged when I shoot and mess with my bow. She currently is a very good "arrow hander to me" and enjoys watching me shoot.
I want to get her something Other than her cheapo plastic "Merida" bow to learn with while I'm shooting but am not sure exactly how to go about that. I see fiberglass youth sets that are about her speed but want something that can be passed down to her sister when she is old enough.
Where should I be looking for a good youth bow for the very beginning of an archery path?

Check out 3rivers archery First Shot Junior set. It's for ages 3-5. We picked up the Lil Indian Bow for our youngest who just turned 7 and she really likes it. Arrows will stick in to a foam target most of the time.
I'm sure others will chime in but that's the route we went.
The bow Greta is shooting is just a home made board bow. It has been passed along from a friend that made it, to my oldest daughter, and now to Greta. Have fun with those kids, this is how I started.
Happy new year Paul!

Thats awesome Jerry!
 Now that is good stuff right there.
Awesome! Keeping it fun is the key when dealing with the kiddos!

A big ol plus one on the snacks!
My 6 year old daughter, all 42 pounds of her, is up for anything as long as good snacks are involved!
That's what it is all about!!
love the excitement in the voice
When the kids are in the 4-8 year old range ya gotta keep it fun. 3D shoots in good weather are great but don't over do it. When they get tired or loose focus, go do something else for awhile.
The hunting part i started my daughter at 8 years old. One on one time with Dad in the woods is a great opportunity to show them that there is a whole lot more to hunting than just killing things..... By the time she was 12 she was a better tracker and hunter than many seasoned hunters i know. We spent most our time stalking, not sitting. Her favorite was spot and stalk hunts....
It's a time in my life i cherish a lot because now that she's all grown up its rare when we get get a chance to go any more.
