A Norton 3-way oil bath stone will be bullet proof. A short learning curve and you're good to go. (you tube). Check the bay for good used one....good luck.

There are numerous effective stones and sharpening systems, but my current favorite is KME.

The Holy Grail of knife sharpeners............
the "Wicked Edge".

Theres nothing like it! Period!

KME is good too.  Ron from KME bends over backwards to help folks.  You can't put a price on that.

For knives, I use the Lansky.  Gets them scary sharp.

Workshop works best for me.  Just wish I could get my broadheads to sharpen, too.

KME for me. I was not taught how to sharpen knives and the KME had me making knives shaving sharp in no time. I do recommend a course diamond stone. Cuts your time in half easy.

A good cheap sharpener.
a flat piece of hardwood.
cut some strips of wet n dry paper from the car body shop.
you can use different grades depending on how much the edge needs working.
then just pull it out flat and tight and secure it with drawing pins.
stones are good but the hollow out in the middle over time.
the Same method can be used over a 4 inch pipe to sharpen 3 blade broadheads with a deadly Sharp hollow grind.

Does not get any better than my buddy Pat McLean...when I want a knife really sharp I just hand it off to him...his secret is a Lansky sharpening system and a steel

So those hand held gimmicks that I have will get it sharp but it won't last long. Will a stone keep edge longer?

Keeping an edge has more to do with the quality of the blade.

Depends what you're looking for.  I like my KME sharpener.  I LOVE my Razor Edge sharpening wheels.  My knives and broadheads have never been sharper.

Anything that will hold a blade at specific and consistent angle works great for me. I use a KME for knives and broadheads and love it. I use diamond course stones, really removes material quick. Arkansas stones for all the rest. Don't forget to strop! It makes all the difference.

I use water stones for my woodworking tools BTW.

Google Edge Pro,they are out of Oregon. You can sharpen any size knife with them. I do my pocket knives and two blade broadheads with the Lansky, and everything else on the Edge Pro.
