As I look at the classifieds, I often see bows that I would like, but they are too heavy for me. With a 30" draw, the poundage goes up quickly, and are out of my comfort range.
I don't know how many people can handle the heavier weights, or if they actually draw somewhat less than 28".
What is your draw length, and which catagory do you fit in, if either one?
28.5" Other than maybe a Super Mag I'm good to go.
29.5" My heaviest bow is 60#.
29-29.25 draw, prefer to stay around 50-52lbs at my draw.
30". Maybe a metric hair more with more back tension. I've settled on bows no higher poundage than 51@28 due to my sensitive bow arm shoulder. Need to work out more really.
With a recurve 26" with a longbow 25.5 for poundage 65-72 pounds! At 61, I can handle those weights in tournament shooting and it doesn't hurt for hunting either! I plan on shooting heavy weights as long as I can control the shot! Jacques
It really all depends on the bow type.My recurve I draw 28 with my asl longbow I draw about 26 1/2. You will lose some lenght due to handle design,so take that into account if you are looking for a diifferent bow than you shoot now.
My Silvertip and Tall Tines are both 58# @ 28", I draw 29 which puts me at about 61#s. I was drawing 75# on my Custom Bighorn but I had to drop some weight due to shoulder and neck problems. I also have a few bows in the low 50's @ 28"
27.5" and my heaviest is 58#. That is my Hunting Bow. My All-Around Bow is 50#.
Depends on the grip. With my Blacktail recurve (high wrist) it is 28, with my Shrew Samurai it is about 27.
Going to do some experimenting, because in cold weather hunting I suspect I am drawing shorter. If so, I am thinking I would be best served with a slightly weaker splined arrow.
30in draw length. I like 45# at 30in. and I think my next bow is going to be #40 at 30in.
45# @ 26" is what my Kodiak Hunter scales. I can shoot a little heavier, but that is what I have right now.
Kanati longbow,50#@28",45#@my 26" draw
About 29.25", I can hit 30" if I really stretch out target shooter style.
Just find a bow that pulls smooth 2-3# / inch past 28" and you'll be fine.
You see the bows in my sig. I like 45-53 @ my draw.
28 1/2-29 depending on the bow. I've shot around 70 pounds for years and just dropped to 60
27.50 to 28 it depends on the Bow.
With a recurve 29.5" 60# to 55# @ 28"
my go to hunting bow is my Hatfield TD marked 60#@ 28"
with a longbow 28.5 to 28.75" 56# @ 28"
Some out there call me "Hobbit" but I kinda like:
Draw length of a "T-Rex"... ... I get lucky some times cause heavy bows just ain't heavy @ 26", well, most of the time... :notworthy: ...
Just a shade over 29", KAT knows this as he was the one has measured it more than once. I like to be 41-47#'s at 29". I can go with more poundage but it tends bring out my target panic......and who needs that!!. Years ago I had a 55# Bear Kodiak Hunter that I shot well.....at my draw that had to be 57-58#, I'm to old for that now. :biglaugh:
I draw a hair under 30" (29 7/8 if we are being particular), and my bows are 67-74# @ 28".
I shoot t/d longbows that are 62-66", and i have chosen them for the lack of stacking at the longer DL.
29.5 low 50's #
27" draw lenght, 50# bow weight
30" draw and shoot the best with bows at or around 60#. I seem to get sloppy when I shoot the lighter weights for some reason...
I'm pulling just over 31" measured at the front of the shelf. My Treadway Black Swamp is 42@28 and my Big Jim Desert Recurve is 39@28. Getting around 50# and 47# respectively.
I have noticed that quite a few shooters think their draw length is longer than it actually is.
My draw length is 27" on a longbow....and I prefer weights in the lower 40's.
" Short arms " here :( I draw about 26 with my grizzly and 25 1/4 with my D bows. All my bows shoot 45 to 53 lbs @ DL. I prefer 47 to 50. I don't get as clean a release under 47 lb. I can easily draw heavier weights up to 67 lbs but the aging body says back off or you may be sorry in the future. Wish I had the longer sight picture with a longer DL.
26.5 or 27 with lighter weights. Widow
26"- I like bows from 45-53# longbows or recurves doesn't seem to matter
#55@30" hunting weight. 49@30" 3D & target weight for those obsesion weekends with 300 arrows or more.
29.5" DL for me. If a bow is much over 45#@28" it is too heavy for me!
Bisch
29" Draw plus or minus a hair. I prefer bows at 50 or less at my draw and think 50@28 would be my cut off when looking at Tradbow but prefer 45-48@28. Last two bows ordered I went lighter than previous bows. Still plenty of power for hunting.
I personally think there is no need to shoot 60-70lb bows but its personal choice and everyone is different (or just stronger than me). Some say it helps them get off the string better.
Shoot what is comfortable for you and dont worry about
others. Its your bow and that is all that counts. I like bows I can shoot for long periods of time and focus on form not my shoulder. Again, its a personal choice.

*sigh*..... a hair under 32"
All my bows are measured as 60#@30"
I'm sick of people telling me that they wish they had a long draw. Personally, I'd rather draw 28-29" & be able to shoot a shorter bow. Right now 62" is as short as I can go & usually have to stick around 66. My freaking selfbow is 73"!
29" draw here. For me, bows that stack have a tendency to aggravate an old sports injury in an already arthritic shoulder. So, I am very picky about the bows I like to shoot. I used to shoot heavier bows but now all of my bows are right around 50 pounds, give or take 2 pounds, at 29". I expect I'll go down another 5 pounds or so as I get older.
Ken : with a long draw most bows @28 are getting very heavy @31 because they where not designed to draw that far. I love my bows that are built to my draw and weight at 55.
27" draw for me, I like my bows anywhere from 46-50 pounds at my draw. I have a bad shoulder from a work injury and much more than that I will feel it the next day.
Ken, I think you are right about some people not knowing their Draw Length.
I think I draw 29 3/4. My preference is for bows to be around 50-55 at my draw.
When I switched over to LH, I worked on my form, and as a result, expanded my draw length to 30". I thought that would be beneficial, and maybe it is, but I like bows that are made for my draw length.
Drew hit it. Some bows stack when they are drawn inches farther than they are designed for.
For buying used, the selection is sooo much better if you draw 28".

my draw is just shy of 29" & I like bows in the mid 50#s I shoot 3d all the time & hunt when I can but don't like going up & down in weight so I shoot the same weight bows for both
I draw between 29 and 31 inches depending on bow and draw weight...I can shoot about 55 pounds left handed and about 65 pounds right handed...not all bows gain a lot between 28 and even 31 inches...I have bows that gain not much over 2 pounds per inch over that range...I also have a Kodiak Magnum that gains 10 pounds between 28 and 30 inches...it all depends on the individual bow...there is not way to tell until you try it

I have probably bought 40 used bows...never been a problem for me...I knew the K Mag was going to stack so I bought a weight I knew I could handle

30.5 maybe a touch more. Prefer bows 60-64" and 47-52 lbs.
I currently draw 30" but am adapting the Hill style of shooting and will see if it affects my DL
I draw 31 1/2 prefer bows in the 48 - 52 lb
27 3/8"; 63, 66 longbows and 65# recurve.

55-57#@ my 30" draw is what I prefer. Too heavy and I can't control it, too light and it makes my release suffer.
My draw is 26.5" Like my bows between 30-40#...IJ
My draw length, last time I measured, is 29 3/4". I don't currently own but one bow, it's been my perfect bow for over 10 years. It's exactly, when the brace height is dead on, 53#@28 and 58# @ 29 3/4". I am hoping to add another bow in the future but every time I do it just doesn't get shot much and I sell it because I cannot justify having a great bow that doesn't see the light of day.
Chris
Ken, I think you are right on about how the used bow market is best for people with average draw lengths and shoot average weights.
The same isn't true for an average size guy walking into goodwill looking for a pair of blue jeans :banghead:
55 @ 31"
I drew well over 28" with my target bows and hunting bows set up like a target bow, but I could not shoot up hill without losing my form and my balance. I shoot 26" left hand and a bit over that right with longbows. I could stretch it to over 28", but my garage is not wide enough for me to it if I do that.
Really surprised at all the 29+ lengths. At 28.5 I figured I'd be right in the middle of the pack?
Typically a bit over 30" I stick with stuff between 52-56 #
29" draw length; heaviest bows are both 60" in length and 60 lbs. at 28" draw length.
I draw almost exactly 27". All of my bows are 70-80# at 27" measured to the front of the riser, not AMO measurements. Like Jacques, I'm 61 and right now am comfortable with those weights but will probably have to drop eventually when I get old.
25" Light draw or heavy doesn't seem to matter.
My longbows are 66" 48@28" but I stretch them out to 29.5. My Journeyman recurve is 62" 50@28 but it feels much lighter.
Dang some of you must be really tall. At 5' 10" I draw 27.5 inches with most longbows.
My draw is about 27" and most of my bows are 55#@28".
not so much tall as long :D
I'm with Jim Wright. I'm not saying some don't have a 30 plus inch draw because I'm sure they do. But i would also be willing to bet lots are 2 to 3 inches shorter than they think. I have seen and checked lots of people and I have yet to see a 30 plus inch draw on a traditional bow. I could draw 29 if I hulked back and over drew but that's not what is natural, comfortable, or accurate and consistent. .
At the end of the day, anyone's draw length is just a number. It is how you work with what you've got.
27
36-24-36..... Oh Nevermind!
My draw is 29" but I probably draw each bow a different length. I do know that I draw further than the guys at the shop that are my size because I have to use heavier spined arrows for the same bows.
I shoot a true 31" and have issues finding arrows. I am shooting right around 40-45 pounds at my draw.My 32 1/4" arrows are just enough to use the back of the broadhead as another anchor on my knuckle.
