Which climbing stand do you think is the best, for shooting a recurve or long bow out of...?
Lone wolf, hand climber models.

Lone wolf
I had a LW, I didn't like climbing with it, it felt awkward to me like I was too close to the tree and being rather broad shouldered, I had a hard time keeping my forearms on the hand climber. I know guys as big as me and bigger who love it. :dunno: Once I got set up, It was comfortable and a solid platform. I opt for the Summit Open Shot. Its a little bulkier, but I feel a little safer climbing with it. Just one mans opinion.
My Summit open shot is the only climber I own...
God bless,
Rodd
I have used an API Bowhunter for the last 20 years. As I got older I would get what I called "treestand shoulders" every year after using it, pretty sore shoulders from supporting my weight while I climbed.
I remedied this problem by putting a 3" strap with loops on each end over the handles and turned my climber into a sit and climb by sitting on the strap as I climbed.
I use my Lone Wolf for when I do short sits or when I have a ways to walk to my tree. Lone Wolf are more compact and easier to get through the brush. But I have a Open Shot from Summit that I use for longer sits. The Summit, in my opinion is a lot more comfortable for longer sits in a tree and feels more stable when climbing.
Lone wolf hand climber for me.... I also own an Ol' Man climber that is by far the most comfortable stand for long sits, but I can't bring myself to use it since I got the Lone Wolf...... The lightweight, portability, ease of climbing and setup make the Lone Wolf my favorite.
Have an API climber that's pretty comfortable.
Another vote for the Summit Open Shot.
Summit Viper. Yes it has a rail. I deal with it. I like to sit on the rail most of the time. Very easy to shoot this way. Would also recommend a SOP harness.
Lone Wolf for me hands down.
Lone wolf.
Wow, I am surprised how many guys like the lone wolf products. Guess it's all in what you need and expect out of your gear.

I raised the seat up level with the rails (almost anyways) it works fine standing.
I am Skeered of heights!! :scared: I stay on Terra Firma, at least if I fall, it doesn't hurt too bad!
I have a Summit Open Shot. I 've had it or maybe 5 years? I have had many stands My favorite so far. Still made in the U.S. A.!!!!I'm 5'9" weigh 155 and am 60 years old. I was looking at their Specialist people say it doesn't pack, flatten as well as the Open Shot though. Bigger base than the open shot. I've heard great things about Lone Wolf stands never tried one. By the way I shoot a Widow PSA, A Wes Wallace Royal Longbow, plus a few other Longbows between 62 and 64"'s no issues at all.
They all pack! I pack my viper everywhere. No its not flat but I strap it to a frame pack with my clothes and possibles. No problem! I think the Specialist would pack even better. IT's lite!
My wife got me the Sumitt open shot for Christmas. I also like the Loan Wolf, but there are a few thing I like better about the open shot. The price bing one, The seat on the open shot raises up and you can stand next to the tree. The short rails of the top section give a little support, or maybe security is a better word. The seat is more comfortable. While I havent hunted with it yet I did climb with it in the back yard. Its not as bad as one would think. I also have the set strap from loan wolf and It works really well on the open shot. with the seat up there is lots of room on the platform, when seated not so much. Once I get my stabilizer straps and bow holder on from third hand archery I think it'll be a winner.
API Bowhunter is my favorite. I have a lone wolf and feel the same as Sean B, climbing feels very awkward.
Lone Wolf and a Rescue one CDS Harness because I hunt alone.
I am lucky to say that hunt just about every evening from OCT.1ST to second week in Nov. I use my API bowhunter most sits. It is sturdy, comfortable, and put it up blind folded!
Hey tecum-tha please expound on that CDS harness. I was thinking of buying some climbing rope to tie into trees where I have lock on stands. I use a SOP harness and a quick prusik not at the bottom of the tree to rope would keep me tied in the whole way up as well as once Im in the stand.
Got rid of my LW. When I use a climber, it's a Summit Open-shot. Easier to climb with and much more comfortable.

Eric, I bet we're close to same age, and I've done exactly the same thing over time, with my old trusty API bowhunter.
The last few years I finally gave in to the sit/climb methods rather than arm grab hang method, I find it's much easier/safer/soreshoulderfree, etc.
Using a Summit Viper lately, and just keep the top section a bit lower than usual, no issues with tradbows.
Lone Wolf hand climber. I climb trees to kill stuff not lounge around and nap.
Lone wolf hand climber combo!!

wow this man took the words right out of my mouth!
x2 Summit Viper with stabilizer straps from "Third Hand Archery"
Summit treestands - they come with an early detection system built right into them - sponsored and paid for by the WDAA (Whitetail Deer of America Association).
Lone Wolf - period.
The only problem with the Lone wolf hand climber is the seat will not filp up. The sumitt open shot is winner between the two. If your looking for a set and climb I think the loan wolf would be the winner. While it weighs about th same as a summit it packs flatter and closer to you back making it feel like it doesnt weigh as much.
If you hook the bungee around the front of the tree (where your back is) from one side of the belt to the other it will allow you to fold the seat up and it leaves you totally in the open. No side rails at all.
And with it bungeed it can't fall down if you bump it.
I don't often use a climber, but when I do it's a lone wolf.
I like the Lone Wolf sit and climb

Ya I've tried that trick and it works. The problem is you don't want to lean on the top section with it set up like this. With the third hand straps on my open shot it's rock solid. I can lean on the top section with all my weight and it doesn't move. It just feels safer to me. I wish Loan wolf would come up with a hand climber like this, where the seat was independent of the frame. It would be perfect.
To each his own for sure, that's the beauty of trad....so many different ways to do things.
I have never had that problem with it moving or shifting. Not sure if I'm "leaning" on you like you are referencing. The only way I lean against it is against the tree, so it's folded up felt against it and I'm just pushing it into the tree. I stand 90% of the time so I don't really even sit.
Glad you found THE one that works for you!
I simply gave up on climbing tree stands. The sit and climb models does not normally provide enough clearance for a longbow shooter and the hand climbers wear me out climbing the tree. I just went to hang on's with steps or climbing sticks.

I like the lone wolf sit and climb. easy to climb and feel really safe, and its comfortable. The arm rest does get in the way on some shots though. Considered the summit open shot for that reason.
been using my loggy bayou since 1988 tried lone wolf and summit just cant give up on loggy and hugging tree
Lone Wolf had $50.00 off for Christmas + $5.00 shipping. I got a hand climber combo, love it. I can already tell it will probably see 80 maybe 90% of my future hunting time. Absolutely ingenious design compared to other climbers I've tried. I can't imagine anyone not liking it. I just watched the YouTube videos to learn how to use it correctly, so simple to use! Definitely an item that goes in the it just plain works category!
API Magnum for me. My son bought the standard model the same year I bought the magnum. I weigh about 190 and the magnum is built for up to 300. Just feel safer with it. Little more room too.
I did modify mine to get rid of the rail. So, in essence it is more like the bowhunter model.
I'm due for a new one and will probably go with the Summit Open shot as I like their system better than the coated chains.
I would look into the XOP treestands. They are about the same as a Lone Wolf (a lot less expensive). I bought a hand climber, a loc on and sticks from this yr.
I have a lone wolf hand climber and it gets a lot of use. They are fantastic stands in my opinion.
I have a Quick and Quiet tree stand.(climber) I bought in 1988 and i am still using it today. They are very soild. They have a lifetime warranty and they are made in the USA!! You dont see them at the big stores, so they are hard to check out in person. Myself and 2 hunting buddies bought them at the same time and we all still use them.
