Title: Dog tracking DVDs
Post by: TexasStick81 on December 22, 2014, 08:34:00 PM
Does anyone have recommendations for DVD's on training dogs to track wounded game?  I don't mind book recommendations as well but I like being able to watch the dogs and handlers work.

I'll check out you tube but the problem there is you get more junk most of the time than helpful stuff I find.  I've tracked down some good folks in following up with.

I have a German Shepherd puppy form a working line coming.  I'll be doing a number of things with the dog but the dam is a bomb detection and search and rescue dog and the sire does tracking with Schutzhund so the genetics should be there.

Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer by John Jeanneney is a great resource for training tracking dogs.  I have a Jagd Terriers I got in March and worked with him using this book as a resource.  He's coming along great.

Roughrider has it. A single video can't come remotely close to the details this book goes into explaining EVERYTHING about training a blood tracking a dog. A incredible well written book that's worth it's weight in gold if your considering training a dog for this purpose. Highly recommend this book and as a pun I have no dog in this fight! lol But it helped me make a family dog into a working dog that absolutely loves to help find my deer.

However I have to say that not every dog makes a excellent tracker. Some just have it,some don't and some just try like hell but don't cut the mustard when the chips fall wrong. There's a huge difference of a dog that wants to and dog that will die trying! Often times the biggest hold up in the process is the dogs trainer! But if your a dog person you will bond with your dog, learn more about your dog and yourself than you ever thought possible, if you take this step! I highly recommend it to anyone. It's illegal where I live so I just take my dog for walks this time of year with no weapons other than my legal CC permit.

I strongly agree with the recommendation of the book "Tracking dogs for finding wounded deer".   I have trained and worked with blood dogs for 30 years and even I learned a good deal from that book.  It is much more than a blue print for training your dog.  It is fantastic learning tool for teaching a handler to understand scent from the dogs perspective.  That is a BIG deal in this business.

Okay, for some bizarre reason it's starting price is $399 on amazon.  I think it's a $13 book.  Anyone have a copy they'd like to sell?  I can PayPal funds over.

Stand by for the third edition.  It will be out very soon.  When the second edition sold out the price spiked.  Go to the United Blood Trackers web site for more information on the newest edition.
