Title: Texas Javelina- spot/stalk ??
Post by: KSdan on December 19, 2014, 11:07:00 PM
Did the Javelina Spot/stalk in AZ 20 years ago.  Loved it.  Anyone know of similar hunts in Texas?  Hill country??  Would not mind trying to pull off a winter hunt.  If not this New Year perhaps next year.  Any info??  Sponsors here?

Mahaska (sponsor) has a javie junt near Sierra Blanca that appears to be spot and stalk. Been thinking about that hunt myself.

Dan, you won't find any Javs in the hill country, only hogs.
Lots of Javs in the South Texas brush country, but way to thick
For any serious stalking. So, if your wanting to do a spot and stalk hunt, you need to go to West Texas.. The hunt mentioned
Above is way west. There are others if you do some searches.

Thanks guys.  I do think that Kent Ostrem was the one I was thinking of. I like the idea of spot/stalk.  I hunted the rascals in AZ about 20 years ago.  Never got one but had a tremendous experience.  West TX seems doable.  Thanks again.

Jeff Massey used to sponsor South Texas Javelina hunts on the King Ranch. I was blessed to go there once and stalking wasn't that hard with all the cactus. We would corn the secondary roads and wait for the Javies to step out to feed then stalk close to them. Sometimes they would feed in your direction and hide behind cactus until the fed within range.

It was a great hunt for sure. Wish he still offered this hunt.

Thanks Doug- I know/read of guys who do this and have a great time.  The thought of roads and baiting has just never appealed much to me (I realize it is not necessarily easy and it is ethical). Open country, free ranging animals, glassing, figuring out the stalk, etc. is the appeal to me. Thanks for the info. . .
