Title: anyone ever use AMSTEEL 3/16" rope?
Post by: DanielB89 on December 16, 2014, 12:22:00 PM
I am debating on changing out the rope on my climbing sticks to something skinnier.  I currently have 3/8" rope and find that it can be a little stiff.  I found some 3/16" AMSTEEL for a good price and was wondering how hard it would be to untie if I put 2 half hitches in it and then stepped on it to climb the tree(i weight 220lbs).

I would think it would work great. Its winch line and rated very high. I use similar warn winch synthetic line on my atv winch and use it all the time. very strong durable stuff.

It certainly won't break, you won't have to worry about that at all.

If that's what you are going to use it for, I'd say it would be fine.

I've used it for about 5 years now.  I don't use a typical knot but the system I use does give me some trouble if the steps are left on for a long period.  By trouble I mean I have to take my gloves off and use my finger nails to pick at it a while before it comes loose.  If it is the same day as they were tied on, or its only been a week or two I don't have a problem.

I like the 1/4 inch as it easier to work the half hitches out for me and I like the added mass as I believe it holds better when cinched under the versa button on my climbing sticks.  Just my personal preference as I know 3/16 is strong enough and should work fine.

I know that the rope is strong enough.  I was wondering about how easy the 1/2 hitches would be to take out after stepping up on the step and them getting cinched down.

I use rope from the "EZY® Climb Folding Rope Tree Step".  It's flat type, wraps well, and not bulky. Someone here or elsewhere mentioned they were able to buy a set of rope only from the EZY company for their own sticks.  Has a loop on the end, no knots needed.

If you use a stoppered slippery half hitch, they are easy to untie.  Like tying the loop in your shoes hiking of then put a stick through the loop and pull it tight.  If you look at a daisy chain you'll understand what I'm talking about.  I use this knot all the time in all kinds of circumstances.
