Title: Tips for hanging heavy treestands?
Post by: Bullfrog 1 on December 14, 2014, 09:45:00 AM
I saw a YouTube video of a guy using a ratchet pulley. Any other tips or ideas other than getting a buddy to hang it for you.  Thanks.  Bill

My buddy has a double pulley system that ratchet straps onto the tree. Then as you pull the stand up with a rope, and reach the end of each pulls distance,it has a cam lock. Then you pull again,it lock what gains you've made again. Over and over until it is up to you. Reverse the cam lock, and lower it the same way. Perfect. I'll get the makers name from him on Weds. when we shoot together.  rat'

Use the linemans strap on your safety harness so you have two hands to work with.

So far, for me, messing with pulleys and cherry pickers and elevators has not been necessary.

I just tie the end of a haul line to my belt, the other to the stand which is laying somewhere below (not DIRECTLY below so I fall on it in a failure mode).  I place my steps, whatever type I use, and will sometimes use a second strap on step at the level that I will be standing to install the platform, so both feet are on a step.  Then install away.

Every stand is different, so practice while on the ground so you know exactly how to do it.  Also, see if maybe you need to install from the right side or the left side, depending upon how the straps / buckles are installed (or swap them to the other sides).

I do it like Chuck.  The harness and lineman's strap is mandatory.  I also use a screw in or strap on hook to hang the stand from while I get the stand strap/chain around the tree and attached to the stand.

My tip.....Buy a lighter one!     :biglaugh:

A big D1 football player like you complaining about a heavy stand? You're old teammates are going to hear about this one.

I'm with the above posters. Harness and line mans belt. I also like a hook or something to rest the stand on while working with the straps. I have a Family Traditions hang on. Not a lite stand by any measure but has a great platform for standing and a comfortable seat. It comes with a T screw that you screw into the tree before you pull up the stand then rest it on that. Makes it super easy.

After years of hanging stands with one leg wrapped around the tree and going thru all kind of contortio9ns to get the dang thing hung I discovered the linesmans belt. Now I won't even think of hanging a stand without it.

I also strap a hook to the tree to hang the stand on while I cinch it up with ratchet straps. For hauling it up I do like Chuck and just pull it up with the bow haul cord. With two hands free it's a breeze

Some folks use a ladder stand to hang a chain on.

I reccomend hunting from the ground. Tree stands are dangerous and a heavy one......

I bring a cordless drill to tap the tree for the anchor bolt first.  Install the bolt and then hang the stand on it to hold.  Can then use 2 hands for straps.

Put some kind of hook (a screw in climbing step works) on the tree and hang the stand on it, then you can do the mounting steps without dealing with the weight of the stand.  Remove hook after securing the straps or chains.
