Currently shooting an 8 strand stock D-10 string on my "hybrid".
Want to have a backup string on hand. I'm thinking a 10 strand D-10 would be a bit more quiet, wondering if I would likely need to go down a spine range (wood) if I switch strings?
I shoot 8 strand D10 strings on all my bows. All my backup strings are also 8 strand so I know that they will shoot as close to the original string as possible. Anything you do to your string has the potential to change your tune, adding silencers, strand count, etc. Only you will know if you notice the difference. It is likely that an increased string count will add noise not lessen it.
I shoot 8 too. If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. Enough other things to worry about in this sport!

Really only one way to find out for sure if it will be quieter--try it.
If someone else makes the second string (or, in some cases, even if it's the same person) then likely everything won't be just the same as the first--you will probably have to do some fine tuning.
Unless you are on the very edge, you shouldn't have to change your arrow spine. Two strands of string material weighs very little, but will add over 200# tensile strength to your string.
