What do you all like for shelf material. I am looking for the quietest when drawing the bow.
Velcro
2nd Velcro.
X3 on the Velcro for the shelf. I use stick on moleskin for the strike plate. I did this after I shot and missed a buck early this year. Completely my fault I simply missed and the buck didn't jump the string or anything but I was amazed at how loud my bow was in the woods with the leather shelf and strike plate. Super quiet now!
I had one bow with seal skin on the shelf and I thought it was the quietest material I have used.
Have been pleased with velcro for many many years.
I have and do put velcro on my recurves and R/D. For the vixen I used a single piece of smooth leather to make the rest and strike plate, but thats just because I made a quiver from the same material and it matches. Plus the design seemed more fitting for the type of bow. But it is really hard to beat the soft velcro for economy, looks, and longevity. A roll from a hobby shop will set you up for plates and rests for a loooong time.
I have been using leather for sometime now. This year how ever on two different outings deer heard me draw. Which resulted in very nervous deer and no shots.
Velcro!

Oops, double post!

seal skin! I gotta get more.
I use Velcro on my bow fishing bow. But, I like a rug rest on everything else. Very quiet.
Calf hair on the Thunderchild and velcro on the rest.
seal skin! :archer:
Velcro on everything but my ELB's.
Velcro, sealskin, calf hair, and even beavertail work great!
Velcro may never receive its due acclaim since it is so inexpensive and widely available.
Then on the other hand, when we see a host of the finest bows, including those approaching two grand, we may quite frequently find that velcro was the bowyer's shelf material of choice.
Has any body mentioned Velcro yet ? I have tried many rests and shelf materials , just can't beat Velcro .
Cheep ,easy to use and it works .
Ditto on the velcro, and while you're at it buy the "Industrial Strength".
I just use a small hunk of smooth leather, and stick a small wooden match underneath it to raise the arrow just a hair.
personally...I really don't like velcro at all.
If ya have any bit of sharpness at the tip of your feather it snags in the loops.
I know a lot of guys use it with good results....it just bothers me.
I like the "bear hair" rest material...(not real bear hair)
It's a carpet type rest. The fibers are straight ie not loops.
doesn't snag because of it.
I've only seen bear hair in a tan color.
Martin sells a rest material that is very similar to it in black though.
Velcro - X100
I can vouch the sealskin but I don't think it's available any longer. Never tried the Velcro but going to give it a try after reading all the hype.

Seal skin for sure, been using it for past 20yrs. Very durable and silent.
Hate to think what I'll do when I run out of my current supply but that should be sometime far down the road.
Seal skin. Have enough to last several lifetimes.
Thanks for the feed back. I might just have to give Velcro a try.
I've always wondered what the source of "Bear Hair" is. It's got to be some common product. Anyone have a clue?
I recently bought a full sealskin which we can still do here in Canada...I thought it was kind of expensive until I did some calculating...it works out to 25 cents a square inch...I bought it for the karma value and therefore will only give it away...let me know if you are going to be in Canada and I will mail you some
DDave
So what do you use to glue down the seal skin.
Tracker2, Use Barge contact cement.
Some of you really seem to like feather rests, particularly Trap's feather rest. I bumped into this yesterday. Any comments? Looks interesting, to me.

I've wondered too...stuff is fairly cheap..but a touch pricey for what it is.
I've looked for comparable stuff in sheets or bulk of some kind with no luck. Spent some time looking at peel and stick carpet tiles...that stuff was all too thick..too nice of carpet...lol
Some paint pads for cutting in were close...but not quite right..and not adhesive backed
If I ever find a replacement I'll let ya know Mr. Lamb.
shearling wool trimed short...one buffing pad will give you a bunch of rests......... It doesnt melt like velcro does...................
Velcro is my favorite. I will use a beard and mustache trimmer to make the velcro as thin as possible if needed.
I am a sealskin or calf hair man myself
Velcro
Velcro; go to the hobby store and buy a box of it and cut as needed. I sometimes use really thin moleskin Dr. Scholls padding for strike plates if I need to get the arrow in a little more.
Calf hair, that's what my widows came with and I am very pleased with it.

I'd think it would wear out really fast.
normally ya put em on like tiny little fletches pointing toward you...the fibers pointing away from ya.
Velcro here also - very quiet and readily available at most locations
I'm trying to find an alternative to Velcro. Who knows when the Govt. will place a moratorium on hunting them.
Buying Velcro from indigenous tribes could help their economy though.
;)
lol..
Charlie...
There might be something to searching out daggerboard carpet as an alternative to bear hair.
I'm slowly looking into it further on my "free" time.
