Title: Has anybody tried this aggressive hunting technique?
Post by: lt-m-grow on December 05, 2014, 01:28:00 PM
You have to see the video because I know I couldn't describe it.  You kinda have to see it to believe it or understand it really.

There is a traditional bow hunter in the clip, but there are also compound bows in it too.    My question is about the technique and not the tool so I figure that should be ok.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W93jY2lu0jg

It looks like a riot and a whole new level of hunting.

it appears that the key to the whole process is to find a mature buck in the middle of a field, that has never seen a human being in its entire life.

public land corn fields?

i've walked straight in on pigs in open swamps a few times like in my avatar. it's suprisingly effective.

Those are a couple-three Wisco boys....all public land (is what they claim and looks pretty legit).

In Wisco, there is lots of public land that is farmed by area farmers. Makes it kinda nice when you know it's public, but it isn't really posted...and the field looks just like the one next to it that's private (even connecting tractor trails)...but it's public and you can walk through it and set-up in that nice funnel along the ridge in the far back where the deer come from the 100's of acres of public land beyond the fields.

Just saying.   :)

I know they do that for pronghorns out west and similarly for moose as well...I dont see why it wouldnt or couldn't work on whitetails. They come to decoys and even attack them so why not. Seems like it would be best with a partner to do the calling.

way too many idiots and poachers in this world for me to try crawling across an open field looking like a big buck

heck they shoot each other dressed head to toe in orange

Cool, but looks very dangerous. Danger being, public land with deke, then comes having a pissed off buck about to try to kill you.   :archer:

I was thinking the same thing, if that buck decided to turn and rush in he wouldn't have time to get out of the way. I do spot and stalk, but here in n.j. I have to have the right conditions as the deer are very used to being close to humans. I wait until I have a wet or damp ground and some wind, then if done right, one could pretty much get right up close.

Public land, I would have a bud handle the decoy  :)  or i would have a big orange vest on it.

Too Many road hunters and deer Jackers for me to want to try that in plain view of the road.

I have cut out cow silhouettes of cardboard and have got in bow range on antelope and geese. I have thought about it with deer but never tried. I have seen friends put the sun at their back at sun set carrying their bow above their head and get close to elk. You never know it may work on the right deer.

I haven't done this but I've used decoys on quite a few different animals and I have no doubt this would work.

They have several videos out and they are very entertaining. They hunt public land and are very aggressive and successful, pretty interesting.

Wouldn't be hard to make a decoy like this with an overhead projector, some cardboard from the local furniture store, and some paint.  I've done it before.

Seems like a guy could use some orange paint on it too, since deer don't see color, in order to make it safer in case another hunter sees you.

I think it's a Montanna Decoy.

The reason I've reached this crotchety old age is that you'd never catch me holding a buck decoy out in the middle of an exposed field, public or not.  Hope their life insurance premiums are caught up!

I like the idea(s) of adding blaze orange to the mix...on the deke and the hunter.

I certainly would not bother the deer.

What an adrenaline rush it would be hey?

I have not done exactly that, but I sure would if I had the opportunity to hunt an area that had big bucks like that.

Any means of the chase that goes beyond just sitting and waiting sounds like a blast to me. Although sitting and waiting works, we know that, it is so boring and there are lots of other things we can do to spice it up, if we just open up to it.

I am thinking that the odds of getting shot thru the decoy are kinda slim as long as you are not doing this during a gun season.  Use a little bit of care.  I am thinking that the odds of falling out of a tree, or poking ourselves with a broadhead far exceed those odds, but we do it anyway.

I will be packing along a pig or cow decoy to south texas this winter to try using it in staling javalina and pigs.

That's just like the Redskins used to do.....without all the fancy recording devices and fake prop bows.

I actually have a DVD of these guys, got it for like 5$ so figured why not?  It is fun to watch but they are crazy bad shots and wound/miss more animals than they get, at least in the DVD I have.

Have tried it on turkeys several times and have always come up short, yet the results provide a glimmer of hope, so I will continue to try.

Am confident that the deer approach could be quite productive if the situation and the hunter adapts to the evolving situation.

Note: believe that if I was bit smaller and in better shape that my turkey stalks could have been more productive. I just don't seem to be able to refrain from gorging on the abundantly lush food plots.

Since I only ground hunt and relish spot and stock opportunities, I will likely procure this video.

Thank you for sharing.

It's a situation type of hunting so don't hang up your treestands just yet unless enjoy tag soup.  Most places I've been you're not going to sneak up within 20 yards on a smart whitetail buck even if you were Casper the Ghost.  Other critters, most city slickers can walk up on but a sneaking up on a big buck in his own home ??????Not in my neck of the woods.

Awesome video, exactly what I did pronghorn hunting and it was a major adrenaline rush. Would only attempt during bow season however

I can see where this would work "awesome" in my draw only archery Elk unit!! In fact, I am going to get an Elk decoy for next fall and give it a try. In a unit 60 miles x 50 miles, x 60 miles triangle......30 branch bull tags and 165 spike tags, don't think there is a chance in h..l of someone shooting me....and my life insurance is paid up!

In my experience with Elk and deer decoys; they work sometimes...and sometimes they don't.Heck, I've called a bull from over 1/2 mile away with my montana dekes....

When they do work its spectacular! It is a pain to haul them around sometimes....

I can see where this technique would work. I have pulled some aggressive tactics with mature whiteys and that was basically get on the ground with them rattle and call. As far as running thru the woods carrying a decoy and then charging at them, I personally don't think this would work in the area I hunt. Also it seemed to me that the only deer they were pursing were 100% in the chase phase. I like the idea of thinking outside the box but I think this is a "perfect storm" type hunting. As far as public ground and "only during bowseason" from what I know about the poachers in my area they could give rip if its bowseason or bullfrog season. Law breakers are opportunist. Id make sure I could be identified as human behind that decoy. Just my 2 cents.

They never left the camera in one place long enough for it to make sense.  Must be ADD. Or something.

My little brother sent me this DVD for Christmas.  I recognize some of the public places they hunt.

They are places I hunted when I was a in high school and early 20's.

Looking forward to watching the videos.

Looks like some exciting hunting. I know a few guys who do similar hunts with a Heads Up Decoy for whitetails, mule deer, pronghorn and turkey. I'm taking my turkey fan from this past spring to do this but haven't tried it on deer, just don't really have a place where I think this would work very well. Atleast not yet anyway
