Post by: Stone Knife on December 01, 2014, 04:27:00 PM
Has anyone used the Big Jim Ground hunter seat? What do you think of it good or bad points.

Make yourself a folding Torges seat. Easy to carry, lightweight, comfortable and works.

I sat on mine all day on November 3rd.  It was comfy.  The best thing about these seats is you can change the angle to adapt for different terrain or just a change of position so your not sitting on the same spot of your rump all the time. Some have had to modify the padding so they can sit longer.  I am okay with the seat as it is and just modifying the angle a couple of times for the day.  Here was my setup for the day:

Of course it helped keep my focus with this sitting in front of me at 20 yards!

He didn't ask about a Torges seat.

Big Jim's Hunter Seat is great! I've had one for a few seasons now and absolutely love it. Lean it against anything and start hunting. No more buckets, folders, or tied on seats for me. In fact, just the other day I burned four Torges seats.

I picked one of Big Jims Seats up at the beginning of this season.  I've had the Huntmore, the Blind King and now Big Jim's seat. Blind King is the most comfortable but the truth is...... both the Huntmore and the Blind King spend most of the time, home in the barn.  Big Jim's seat, all round, has everything else I've tried beat, hands down.  Easy and light to carry, sets up instantly, comfortable and quiet.  What else could you ask for?

For short hunts it works well, throw it over your back and go.  I use the blind king or hunt more for longer sits. I highly recommend it for your arsenal.

Looks good. I've been looking for a good seat and that might be the ticket. Thanks. That bow looks awesome too. What is it ?

The bow in the pic is a Great Northern Critter Gitter Special.  All Osage with an Actionwood core. The limbs on this bow have to seen to be believed. Incredibly narrow and deep.  Jerry makes a fine bow! It has become my soulmate!

One more thing I love about the ground hunter seat is that you can use it with just about any tree.  I love finding clusters of little trees to lean it up against.  Helps break up my silhouette. Oh - and it makes a great walking stick to boot! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

The Big Jim seat is ok but I found it to heavy if you have to go very far. I think there are better choices. I have to agree with Joe Skipp on the Torges seat.

I have used one, and found it very comfortable.
The good points are that it takes literally no time to set up, and I actually used it as a walking stick in rough terrain.
It can get a bit on the heavy side for long treks.

I love mine. One feature that sets it apart is being able to use it on wide based trees with large roots where a stool or a bucket wont allow you to lean back against the tree.

This is my 2nd season using it and I love it...

Thumbs up for Big Jim's tree seat, and it helped me as a 'steadying stick' when walking West Virginia hills during a recent hunt. I would like a little more padding on the seat though. I would buy another if something happened to the one I have.

an you lean against the tree or does the stick part jab you in the back?

You use the tree as a seat back.  The part of the seat at the top that look like a Y does not even touch your back.  I've had it at lots of different angles from very low to very high and the Y part has never touched the small of my back.

Just to clarify, the hunter seat only weighs about 3 lbs and has a carry strap. Everything gets heavy after awhile. What would you cary that was lighter? and how much lighter could it possibly be?
I too found the padding to be inadequate for me...but I weight right at 300 +- depending on the week and for whatever reason, none of my fat ever went to my arse...so no personal padding there either. It is an easy fix to add a little but for most, it works well as is.

thanks, bigjim

A Torge's seat is a lot lighter than 3 pounds....

I love mine.  Very comfortable, takes 2 seconds to put in place, very stable.  The tree behind you breaks up your outline. Very comfortable with your back to the tree.

I bought one back in October and retired my Nif-T-Seat to the trash the day it arrived.

Yet another use for this seat. Just started another thread on whether anyone has ever had a hot rutting buck ever charge them, but the thought occurred to me that if that ever looked like it was about to happen, this seat would make a nice defense weapon.  I'd be glad for that 3 pounds of weight then!  LOL!

The torges seat is by far the most comfortable I have ever tried!!

I can sit on Jim's seat for about 3 hours without too much problem. A little more padding would be nice, I bring extra with me. A little larger seat would probably be good too. Like anything though, my back or butt will get sore after a few hours. But, better than a bucket, folding stool, etc.
I like it.

I love to use it when I am still hunting.  (I guess it's not really still hunting if I walk and sit.) It's easy to carry and like others have said, it can lean against almost anything that can hold up my weight.

Big Jim's tree seat is more versital than the Torge's, and I have both. They're both good, each with individual advantages. To each his own I say.

I have had one for 2 years best $$$ I ever spent makes any tree a potential blind location, I like to sit in differant locations so this works great for th mobile hunter! I added a thick piece of foam to the seat bed and made a Paracord carry strap to replace the original one!
