Title: Black Coyote
Post by: Tsalt on November 29, 2014, 05:35:00 PM
I got to my stand a little late this morning.  It was getting settled in and I hear running.  I look down and see a coyote run right under my tree.  It's followed by a second one... A black one!  At first I wondered if it was a dog, but that didn't make sense.  Seconds later a third comes running.  I grabbed my bow in hopes of getting a shot. The third one must have seen me and made a hard left... Next thing I know the black one is back, apparently looking for the last one.  I sqeek at him and as he slows to a trot I shoot...
Upon realase my bow string hits the top edge of my arm guard and of course the arrow flys funky and misses.  I've shot with that arm guard before but I only had one layer on and it was kind of loose... That's all I can figure. Either that or the angle I shot causes me to lock out my arm more??  I don't know but I sure don't like that it happend!  Anyway... About that black coyote.... I googled it and saw several pics, but it's the first one I've ever seen.  You guys ever seen one?

I've seen some darker ones but never a full-on black one. Very cool! Maybe Coy-dog? But I think the jury is still out on coy-dogs, think I heard they're not possible. Dunno. Still cool though, maybe you'll get a shot next time! If your string doesn't normally hit your arm and youre just using the guard to keep your sleeve pressed down, I've used my wifes hair ties before. Keeps the sleeve flat but nothing to catch your string on.

Killed several on my lease with a rifle. Never killed one with a bow. Seems like we have a lot of the black ones around my lease. They aren't Coy-dogs, they really are black coyotes.

Got one on a trail cam couple years ago but never got a bow shot at him.  They are rare but out there.  According to a book I read coyotes bred with wolves as they expanded north and east.  Most have at least a little wolf DNA is them and that along with normal color phases can account for the black ones.  ( just what i read in credible book, I am no expert)

I also smoked at white one  with silver tips with a F250 in southern Manitoba once.  Gorgeous and always regretted not skinning him, but we were duck hunting.

I hope you see him again.

Not rare at all really, many are shot and trapped every year. Lots of different colors variations too.

Beautiful animals!

But I wiil say there is 100% positive proof crossing between dogs and coyotes that are called coydogs. Ask any fur buyer and trapper we run across them.

I shot one several years ago with a wheel bow....all black except for a little white patch on his chest. But that is the only black one I have ever seen in person.

Ive seen several here in PA.  Including a pair together a few years ago.  Too far for a shot with my bow.  I saw them on the first day of rifle season.

I didn't know Thumper missed!

We will catch one on occasion. All of the ones that I have seen have pretty poor fur. They have looked good from a distance but have had guard hair problems up close. Still neat to see running around.

I've seen two. Could've shot one with a rifle while deer hunting several years ago but it was early and I didn't want to spook any deer that may have been close by. Now, I wish I would've shot it.

I've never seen one in Oregon,Co0lorado, Nevada, CAlifornia, Arizona and that includes years of predator hunting and looking at thousands of coyotes. I have seen from almost white , silver, grey and red to dark grey.
I suspect you have wolf croses and if a dna test were taken that would probably show this to be the case. If the female is a coyote the pups are usually small too. I would imagine a female coyote in heat would be an apt mate for a young wolf looking to start a family.

God bless, Steve

Coyotes are fascinating creatures.  I was a diehard dog hunter before becoming fixated on traditional bow hunting. There are quite a few black coyotes killed every year.
And, yes, I agree with KS Trapper, coy dogs do exist.  January 2000 I called a 50 lbs coy dog to my buddies bullet.  Medium hair length and colored like a domestic dog with the face and tail of a coyote.  It was running with a full coyote, probably a female considering her size and time of year.

Believe me there are plenty caught each year in multiple states in all directions just because you don't see them dosent mean there not there.  Are they crossed up probably most of them with dogs but there are black species of animals in all types of breeds deer, fox, coyotes, raccoons, opossums even squirrels. I see them every year on trapping sights. I've caught a few but can't catch a white one to save my butt.

Saw one on my property a few years back reminded me of the Walt Disney evil wolf trotting along in the woods.  Certainly acted like it had some place to go.

Several have been killed here in western Va, unfortunately not by me but someday would really like to have the hide of one tanned to hang with the red foxes I've killed.

The most recent DNA research shows a couple of interesting things about wolves and coyotes.  1.  Black fur is dog DNA. and 2. Most coyotes over 55 lbs. have dog DNA.  Most mono color phases have to be selected for.  Nature doesn't do it as a rule.

I believe it, but I would have thought the weight would have been lower that's pretty big. I've caught hundreds of coyotes and checked there weights and it takes a special coyote in this area to hit 40#. I've only done it twice since keeping track many years ago one was 41# and this guy was 49#

Cool, I have never seen a black coyote. Heck, I never even seen a picture of one before this thread.

I use to hunt coyotes quite a bit. I even have a deer stand called the "Coyote Stand". My oldest son and I have put an arrow thru more than a few Coyotes.

Black coyotes are a "Melanistic" (melanism) color phase of the animal.  Similar to albinism but not as rare an occurrence as the albino color phase would be.  The black color expression would be a recessive trait that could be expressed within a whole litter of puppies if a black male and a black female coyote were to breed.  The same would hold true if two albino coyotes were to breed, all their pups would be albino.

Black coyotes are no different than Black Panthers, which are melanistic cougars, and or, jaguars.

Seemed a bit rare years ago but I see them shot and trapped in Georgia very often.  I shot a monster black one last year with my bow and never recovered him.  I get 2-3 on trail cams every year. They are cool.

Lots of study on them here in Nova Scotia after a hiker was killed by a pair in the Cape Breton Highlands two years ago. A 93 pounder was trapped here a year ago.
Turns out we have the Coy-wolf here. I saw a documentary on TV where they compared sculls. Smallest was the coyote, largest the wolf and in between the coy-wolf. DNA also helped in this new designation. There's dog in there as well, giving them less fear of humans.
Most major cities have good populations of them. I think Detroit has an estimated 2000 coyotes. Toronto was mentioned, showing a radio collared path of one. Next time you're driving by a large on/off ramp area in a city and see a natural no-man's land area in the middle of all those vehicles flying by - good chance that's a coyotes home.
