Title: Beman Centershot
Post by: Riverrat43 on November 26, 2014, 07:37:00 PM
I wanted cedar but a friend talked me into carbon arrows before I go to cedar. He reckoned as a new and extremely inconsistent shot with a recurve, I would do well to eliminate all the inconsistencies I could as I practice. He said that straightness, weight per inch, diameter, and spine would all be more consistent with carbon. ( or aluminum, I chose to go the carbon route) I agreed to try and shoot carbon while I develop correct form and get more consistent. I bought 6 Beman Centershot trad carbons. They are spined 500 and have 5 inch right helical feathers. They came with brass inserts that weigh I believe 75 gr and can be cut off and will weigh 50. The arrows are a full 32 inches and according to Beman weigh 8.3 gr per in. I plan to shoot Simmons 165's with this set up. I installed the inserts just like they came. 75 gr. I did not cut the shafts, left them at 32 inches. I had some 125 field tips and I put them on. I just had to see how they were going to fly. Now, my draw is a shade over 29.5 almost 30. My bow is the Samick Phantom with 40# limbs at 28 inches. All I have had to shoot so far are cedar test arrows at 55-60 and 60-65 spine weight. I had 125 field tips on them too. I was all over the place mostly left of where I wanted to hit. Today I tried the carbon set up as I described. I started at 10 yds. WOW, 3 arrows ( all the tips I had) in an area the size of a softball and center! I saw no fishtailing or arrows trying to get sideways. I backed up to 15 and shot the three again. Same deal, all in a small group and centered. Did this about 6 times. Best I have ever shot with a recureve. ( I know, 15 yds is very close and 40 lbs isn't much) The fletchings were all just slightly to the left in the target each time but you have to walk up to the target to tell. Yes, I did have a couple of low shots, not all were perfect but all were in the center of the paper plate. My 165 gr Field tips and broad heads should be here Friday or Saturday. I. can't wait. I plan to put the heavier weight tips on it and shoot to see how it does. If the arrows still want to lean to the left a tad,I can also trim about an inch and a half off the total length if I need to. Then there is the 25 gr of insert I could remove if needed...at least now, I feel really good about shooting and have confidence that I can get the arrow tuned to the bow. Kind of excited.

And they are on sale!  Was told they will be discontinued.

I would bare shaft test those arrows with different field point weights and lengths. The bare shaft will tell you what works the best in your particular bow. I shoot the .500 Centershots from a #50 Black Widow longbow. Arrows are cut to 29" with the 50 grain brass insert and 175 grain field point. I also found out that this combination works great in my 1962 #45 Bear Kodiak bow. They are great shooting arrows and seem to work in a wide range of bow weights.

I read something here that they are in the 2015 Beaman catalog however they now come with standard inserts instead of the brass 50-75 break off inserts.

I purchased a dozen 340 on sale (40% off) and they are too stiff.  Just by chance I was shipped one 400 arrow (by mistake).  Bam, perfect bareshaft.  I ordered 2 dozen more 400's last night.  Yes, I was told by Lancaster they are discontinued.  When they're gone that's it.

Looks like I'll have a dozen new 340's to get rid of.

Joe, what pound bow are you shooting? About half the arrow charts show I should be shooting a 500 and the other half show a 400. Can't afford to buy a ton of arrows to try.

Glad that the centershots are working well for you.  But don't totally give up on cedars.  To be fair the cedars you described are way too stiff for your bow.

Oh no...cedars are going to be my arrows next year I'm sure. This year is going to be spent learning how to shoot. The carbons were a relatively inexpensive way to do that. Herman, I was told that 60-65 was too weak for my bow go figure.

I'm shooting a 55@28 Cari-bow Slynx drawn to 28.5.  340's full length with 200 gr point and 75 gr inserts would probably have been OK but was too heavy of an arrow for my liking.  The 400 I cut to 30.75" and w/50 gr insert and 200 gr point is showing just slightly weak.  I'm sure with a bit more trimming I'll be very happy.

Thanks Joe. Mine are 500's full length. Just put the 165 gr Field tips on and man do they feel nose heavy! Lots more than I thought. Its OK I think. I have a 29.5 inch draw, so that gives me some room to trim. I can also take off the extra 25 gr on the brass insert if need be. Gonna start tuning tomorrow.

The Centershots aren't discontinued.  They are just shipping them with aluminum inserts now instead of brass.

I have been testing the .340's at 30" out of a 63 pound Bear takedown.  Bare shaft and fletched arrow flight is great.

I got some Centershots from Lancaster Archery yeseterday while at their showroom. I did see the 2015 Beaman catalog while there and the Centershots are listed in the 2015 catalog but with regular inserts and not the brass inserts. Brass inserts now appear to be optional.

I cut 'em off to 30.5. Screwed the 165 field tips in and shot some at the bag target. They fly super straight says my cousin standing behind me. My groups ( if you can call them groups) are about softball size at 10 yds and open up as I go backwards. At 20 yds it pretty pitiful. You could probably put a basketball in the middle of the arrows. They do hit hard though. They literally rock the bag and PVC rack when they hit. Now for some more Moebow videos and more practice. I've noticed that when I talk myself thru each shot telling myself what Moeboe said in his videos, that I shoot well. When I forget to go "by the numbers" it shows. Thanks for the help via video Moebow.
