Hello, I have a beautiful Java Man recurve and want to ask if cold storage will hurt the bow. I cannot keep it with me in Forest Service barracks, so it may be exposed to single digit temps over several months in my storage unit. I do have concern. I appreciate any input!
Just send it to me, I'll take care of it for you! Lol
On a serious note, I really doubt it would hurt anything but Gregg would be the man to ask. He answers his email, fast!
I know the cold weather guys will chime in but just from a logical standpoint could you perhaps wrap it and store it in a highly insulated container of some sort? Just figure out something with multiple layers of material to shield it from direct cold? It seems like given enough time cold will find its way in to any system, but if you pack it in a multilayer system of insulating materials and an airtight container or two, be creative, it will keep cold air away and protect it??
It doesn't sound ideal but there must be a way.
Yes, Gregg is quick to reply, ask him.
I'm going with less than ideal as well, and also second to wrap it well in multi-layers. There shouldn't be any moisture that would freeze and expand it any. Of course, if there is almost literally ANY where else you could keep it I would go that route. A friends house?
Thank you both! Lol, Gregg certainly has made me a thing of beauty, Biathlonman. Nineworlds9, I keep it in a Neet bowcase with 1/2" foam padding, and may wrap in additional layers, thank you. I will shoot Gregg an email. :)
Cavscout, thank you, I agree, as I have concern and will try in the meantime to make arrangements with a co- worker for storage. :)
FWIW, I know several guys that store their bows in there unheated and un insulated garage with nothing more that a bow sock on them. Last winter, mine were hanging in my garage. Laminated bows, not selfbows. Got down to -25c in there last year. They were fine. But, if your too concerned, there are several of us that would gladly bowsit for you. :D
I am gonna guess that an unstrung bow stored at reasonable cold (not surface of Mars) will do no damage. I myself would be careful shooting it right away if it was -50. Just let it acclimate. I think heat is worse for it than the cold.

I appreciate your input, Timbermoose. This gives me some relief, knowing I've had it exposed to the cold for a week now. And that's a very kind offer to bowsit, haha. :)
Yes, unstrung, and I will allow it to acclimate. I am aware of damaging heat. Thank you, ChuckC! :)
