Title: Speaking of Wool Hats...
Post by: Lin Rhea on November 15, 2014, 08:30:00 AM
Ok, I love my wool hats. Filson wool packer, etc. I am thinking of getting one of Chuck's wool Coup Cap, but I have a dilemma.

I hate to buy one in hunter orange but there are times where I have to wear hunter orange during the modern gun season. I have a drawer full of orange caps but want to wear my comfortable wool hats especially since this cold snap coincides with modern gun season. If I am going to buy wool I want it to be in some traditional earthy color, not orange.

I would rather attach temporarily some kind of legal slip on orange or tie on orange strap, scarf, etc to the hat and that way I can still wear my wool and be legal.

What do you guys do? If you have a supplier for your product, please share that too. Thanks

Don't have any links but I know they make slip on orange covers for cowboy hats. I recall my uncle having one.  Something like that might work.

I have an orange wool stormy kromer that I tend to wear when needed.  But I've also used and orange wool stocking cap on top of another nice wool hat I have.  I know the stocking cap will fit nicely over the top of my new Coup Cap if needed.

agree, get a cheap, very light weight stocking cap of whatever color you want, and put it over the cap you like.  Or. .  hehehe get out the spray paint.

:scared:  Not on my wool ChuckC!  :)

That's a good idea about the stocking cap. I have one in orange. I like the slip on cowboy hat things too but I cant seem to find them now that I want one. I'll be looking.

Thanks guys! Good hunting!

Lin -
Ditto on the stocking cap. Where I hunt, the orange is required while moving around. But when on the stand or in the ground blind it can be removed. I've also seen some hunter orange bandanas that can be also be used in this same manner.

BTW - I love the blade you made for me. Hasn't been bloodied as yet, but the season is not over.

How about one of the "pre formed" bandannas marketed to motorcycle riders to wear under their helmet. I've seen them in safety orange and they're great for warm weather wear alone. Cheap too. I sent you a PM with a link.

I have an orange knit cap that I stretch on over the crown of my hunting hat to give the orange coverage I need while on the move.  Then just pull it off when I am on stand.

Here's a cool hunter orange hat, but not wool. The site does offer some cool stuff, including wool hats.

I have been thinking about making one out of light weight orange cloth. My idea is to make a cover to fit over a cap with a couple of tails sewn on that would go inside the cap when worn to hold the cover in place. I have the cloth, going to make one to see how it works.
I have a radar type cap for cold weather hat that is reversible. Orange on one side camo on the other, love the versatility of it. Been thinking of a nice wool cap but need a way to have orange too. What I have in mind would be light weight so I could also use it on my warm weather hats.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Good suggestions.

Here in Arkansas we have to have so many square inches of orange on the head and the body. Has to be both.

Cabelas packable camo orange wool hat. Gives me the style I like and meets the state regulations.

Quality is on par with Scala wool hats. I can reccomend them.

I still were my favorite hat I just put an orange stocking over it and don't even realize it's there.
A hat and vest are the minimum of orange in MN.

Hi Lin, You might want to go on dayonecamouflage.com and check out their Crusher hats. You can order them in different camo patterns and also in wool. They are made reversible with orange on the inside that doesn't show when you wear it in the camo mode! Hope this helps.  Denny from Michigan

King of the Mountain, wool garments, makes a hat that is camo, and has a flip open blaze orange hat. Its like a double hat in one.

Lin,

Cabela's has an Under Armour Tac Stealth Beanie in blaze orange on sale now. I have this same beanie in camo and solid green. They work great over the crown of a cap if needed. If you don't like the UA logo, just roll it inward. They're light and pocket-stuffable too.
