I say bitter cold and it was for Central Texas ( 26 with a 20mph North wind ) I'm not sure what the wind chill was but it was cold , so there I sit in a tree along the edge of the river an hour before sun rise. Did I say it was cold well it was to me but all my wool kept me from shaking out of my tree. The deer started moving right as the sun was coming up , had a good 10pt working several doe around back and forth for an hour. He would offer me several shots and I drew on him a few times but held off cause it was still early and our rut is on. I saw the 10pt look down toward the river then all his hair stood up and he layed his ears back , but only for a few seconds. I could not see what he was looking at but he could then as fast as he bowed-up he turned and looked like you just whipped a puppy and started sneaking the other way. When I looked back I saw why a big ol body with a wide rack was heading my way and that 10pt wanted nothing to do with him.......

I'm not going to drag this out all day ( about to load pics ) anyway I could tell at first sight at 50yds I would send an arrow if he would give me a chance. As the 10pt snuck off this buck went right for him just slowly walking him away , then he turned back and was looking at the doe that was 10yds in front of me. I guess she liked him cause she squated and pee then ran a little circle well he liked that and ran over and stuck his nose in it then did a neck stretched out lip-curl. So this is going on at about 10 or 12 steps right in front of me , I'm ready bow is up and he has no clue I'm around. I'm glad the wind is going at 20mph cause I know I'm shaking the giant old tree I'm in..
:campfire: Was a windy morning, I opted for the ground blind this morning instead of the swaying tree...sounds like you did some good.

Come on now lets get those pics loaded...
Ok did I say it was cold if I haven't I will say now for being in Central Texas it was cold gents. Well he is offering a shot that I can't pass up , so I draw lock on him for a few seconds and send a big Battle Ax head toward him. I shooting a 61# Horne longbow with a 750gr arrow and when that big Battle Ax head hit him it knocked him off his feet. Blood shot out like you just shot a red can of spray paint , once back on his feet he made a mad dash with not much help of his front legs. My shot was a touch forward but almost cut his heart in half and even at that he made it about 125yds before going down. He ain't the biggest buck I have ever shot but I'm sure proud of him , for the area I'm hunting he is a dandy old buck.... Congrats!! Sounds like a dandy. :clapper:
This is getting good...
Pics!!!!
Ok here he is , he is an old 7pt buck and I'm sure glad to have him. He was a deer that I could not pass on from the first sight of him at 50yds or so I knew I would shoot. He was a deer for me that did not need a check with the binoculars.

Outstanding, Sam! He does a good job of filling that hauler. I don't think I would have passed him either.
Great Buck! I wouldn't have passed him up either.

Great looking buck... love your tote rack there...
Great job brother...congrats!!
Thanks guys , I am sure proud of him I have been spending a bunch of time in the woods for a buck like him. He is an old Bruzer for sure it was my first time to lay eyes on him the rut is a wonderful thing...
I love the BattleAx heads and also love Simmons TreeSharks as well , never had any issues with flight of either. I do shoot real heavy arrows not sure if that helps or not ( shot my other buck and a good hog with the TreeSharks last month , have taken many animals over the last several years with both heads and have no complaints.....
The hitch basket is a heavy duty one my old boss made it for me in our metal fab shop...
Thanks again guys , wish everyone the best of luck out in the woods....
,,,Sam,,,

Beautiful buck Brother. I really like the big 6 point frame deer. I hunted one last season but could never cross paths. He's a fine specimen! Oh by the way its 23 here this morning. I feel your pain!

Those Battle Axes are indeed wicked.
Superb, I could use this right now. :campfire:

Congratulations nice buck and very nice story
could you tell us a little more about The " BATTLE AXE " what kind of penetration you got on deer and hogs .
I have some comming next week , i will shoot them also from a 60 pounds dwyer longbow.
thank you
That's a big ol' Texas deer. It looks like this one and the one you shot earlier are related.
Could you please send some of that Texas 'cold' up our way? :D
Our temps haven't got out of the teens for over a week, and it's 8 this morning. At least it has gotten above zero, so I guess I shouldn't whine.
Good job! Sometimes, freezing your butt off can warm your heart.
Thanks again guys I do love getting an old buck like him , I don't consider myself a trophy hunter but I do try for older animals when I can. The buck I shot at the first of season and this buck were taken about 60 miles apart from each other. I have one buck tag left that I going to do my best to put on one more but next chance at a buck will be in December I think.
The Battle Ax heads are great and like I said I also shoot TreeSharks a lot also. My bows are in the 60# range at my 30' draw and my arrows are in 750gr range. My arrows are GT 75/95s with 100gr brass insert , 125 steel broadhead adaptor , some are footed with 3in peice of 2216 , wraps and left wing feathers , then whatever head.
I have taken with the big heads , many deer and hogs , Aoudad , turkey , fallow deer , bear , and muledeer. They leave great trails and big holes , I have bent a few but just fix em with a hammer. I don't have any trouble sharpening them and at least one is always in my quiver. Most times I have an exit hole even on big hogs but like most heavy bone will stop em , even a poor shot will do enough damage to put an animal down ( not that I take bad shots sometimes stuff just don't go as planned ). Anyway I do like the large heads....
,,,,,Sam,,,,
Beautiful looking deer, congratulations! Thanks for the report on your broadheads. They are obviously working well for you.
-Jay
Great story! That broadhead is huge! It's gotta leave a hole like a hatchet!
