Lefty and I are going bunny hunting this Saturday and anyone that wants to come is welcome. We plan on meeting Saturday morning at the boat ramp on Tug Fork at Lake Sugema. If'n anyone is interested give me or Lefty a shout and we can come up with an exact time (more or less). Refreshments can be brought or bought as there is a town close by. Let us know and good hunting.
-
I will be driving over from Mt Pleasant if anyone wants to carpool!
-
Darn it :knothead: I stayed the weekend in Iowa this PAST weekend for work. I did roam the countryside looking at state land to deer hunt on. Got 2 points now. Would have been nice to meet some guys. I did have a good time stump shooting
-
I might be able to come play bows n arrows. Looks like about 2 hours away straight down Hwy 1. Close to Mr Vic's house too... you gonna be there Victor?
Time to meet and directions? I see a road crossing on the NW arm of L Seguma labled Tug Fork, is that the spot? How's the wabbit population down there?
Better check if I need to pick up a 2007 hunt tag, forget when out turn over date is.
-
Well I first seen this and my reaction was about time I tryed to bunnie hunt with my Bow. It's been a long time since I tryed that. But was waiting on a go ahead from the war department. Seems I recieved all clearances, but one from second in command(daughter) so yea I should be able to come to this. And you got the spot picked right Shaun.
-
I would love to come ...but am in the process of moving...maybe we could do another hunt next month..good luck to all who go!
-
Hi Shaun and Mr. Vic, Like Vic says Shaun, you have the right spot on map. I was thinking around 9:15 give or take. Lefty and I are flexible on this. So you tell us what you would like.
As far as the Wabbit population, I have no idea. Lefty said he has got a few rabbits up around there and thats good enough for me to try. Here in Agency where I live we have more rabbits in town then outside of town. Its just that the neighborhood sees no humor in our Beagle running through there yards bellering. Its not like we are shooting guns off. Anyway I am sure we can make a good time of it. Any questions just ask.
-
Beagle! That sounds like fun. I will aim for 9:15 and we'll fling some arrows. It will be good to see you agian Vic and to meet some you Court and Lefty. Hope some more folks can make it too. Better check the larder for Hassenfeffer supplies.
-
Sounds great! Looking forward to meeting you all!
-
I can throw in some deer sausage I made if someone wants to fetch cheese or crackers. It may not taste as good as a good locker does it but it won't kill ya.
-
oh man, I wish I could be there. Son has a wrestling meet. Hopefully, you guys have so much fun that you'll decide to do it again before bunny season ends! The season doesn't end until Feb. 28. So, if another bunny hunt gets organized I sure would do my best to make it. Take pictures guys. Have fun!
-
I got some deer sticks to bring!
-
Same here Shaun, have something for you to take home so bring the truck. Humm, round and about seven feet tall. Court, What won't kill ya makes ya stronger. Cheese and crackers? done.
-
Lets take her to the top again and see if anyone else is interested.
-
ttt
with only 4 of us we may have to double up on some of the assingments, ie. tall tales, slip n falls ("I was just going to make a snow angle"), missing easy ones, hitting impossible ones, etc.
And who's going to help look for my arrows in the snow? Note to self... no white fletching.
-
I'm Iowa born and raised and grew up hunting small game in there. "No hunting" signs hadn't been invented in those days and pheasants and rabbits were thick. great memories and I miss small game hunting this time of year.
Have fun.
-
Shaun, my 12 year old (thinks he is going on 20) will be along also. But don't worry he can B.S. Tale Tales with the best of them. I kind of like the double tree bank shot that I made on purpose.
-
Just got back from the Fin & Feather - picked up a new lisence, the old ones expired on Jan 10. With habitat stamp, $2 donation to TIP and whatever else they see fit to tack on it was $28 and I'm good to go for another year. AFTER they asked about the fishing tag and I told them I never did use it last year, I asked "Is shooting a carp with an arrow fishing?" You guessed it, it is. Will have to pick up that tag before spring.
The bunny with the basket of eggs is safe, all others are getting at least a near miss.
-
Tom and I will be driving over together. We will see you all around 0915. My cell is (319)931-0197 if anyone needs to get a hold of me.
Chris
-
Mines 641-799-6891 if someone needs it.
-
Ok fellars, fixed a couple wood dowels up today and went to the hay barn for a new twine bow string, Bow was a little crooked but I bent her back. License? What's that Shaun?
-
If Court shoots his Vortex and Chris shoots the MOAB, it will almost be like I was there! Have fun guys. I am headed for Kalamazoo.
Dave
-
I hope a small turn out doesn't discourage an encore down the road. I'm leaving this weekend for two weeks in Costa Rica; so I won't be there. Maybe next time. By the way, don't you have a few porkers roaming that area?
-
Remember we want pictures for those of us that can't go this saturday....Good Luck and if things go good maybe do this again next month, maybe over Presidents day week-end...what say you?
-
I'll try to get some pics. Ought to be a most handsome group of archers. At least thats our story and we are sticking to it. Dave, I am taking the Vortex if by chance I happen to actually get a bunny I'll name it for you and hang its ears above your ol' bow. Ham, once in awhile I hear of a porker running around but nothing to brag about yet. Our DNR did say that we are starting to get a few. With any luck we will have another hunt in February. Does anyone have an area they would like to pick?
-
Taking a MOAB for backup and a selfbow for fun. Taking a camara for pics. My cell 319-321-1414.
-
Heck guys the heat is on and the snow melting. Keeps this up and i might show up wearing shorts and t shirt. All ready but a haircut. Hope your cameras take thin pictures..
-
Vic I'll turn my camera vertical if you want, that way it won't take wide pics.
-
Wish i could go but behind at work,so have to be there.Would be fun !!! I've been to shaun's house a couple years ago about 20 minutes from me,and got to shoot a few of his bows!!! I'll have to get together with you guy's in the near future!
Have fun and leave a few for seed !!!!
Ron......Wellman,ia
-
Thanks Court, Between that and me wearing plaid to di-fuse my human form, it should work.. Kelly i don't have to worry about saving any for seed, I would be surprised if i stumbled and hit one.
-
I'll be waiting for pics and stories !!!!!!
Ron
-
I'll let others tell the stories and show the pictures. All i will say is thank god for my easy chair!! Feet are howling. Never hunted with a finer groups of guys..

A fine day afield. Mr Vic and I agreed we need to get out more often. Rabbits 12 archers 0. I had one real nice running 15 yard shot and came close. Had one 18 yard straight up at a squirrel and got even closer.
Did you know they have an osage auction at Keosaqua on Saturday mornings? Had to do a U turn and check that out.
Great to see you again Tom, small world from field dogs to trad archery.
-
Well here we go, it was a fine day in S.E.Iowa. We met at the Tug Fork boat ramp as planned (across the road from Lake Sugema). Couldn't have asked for a finer day (almost). As Lefty was the only person that had hunted this area we quickly made him Head Scout. I bowfish this area quite a bit in the summer but haven't ventured into the wild area around it seeking out the reclusive furball bunny. I would like to say that everything started out great but instead my camera didn't get a single pic and I lost our Beagle in the first 15 minutes. I would like to say that it was some of the easiest walking I ever did but then again that would be a lie (For verification of this anyone can ask Mr. Vic). As for me I am still picking thorns out of my hands and face. I wouldn't make a very good brush dog. Anyhow I want to show you a pic of some of the handsomest Archers I ever had the privilege of hunting with. OOPS!! Minus Lefty as he is handling the camera work.

-
That is a handsome group. Just woke up from my nap, had a cramp in my right leg. Shaun its only been 14 years. Thanks again Lefty.
-
Well as I stated above our Beagle left us after about 15 minutes and had her own adventure if she could only talk it might be a better story than this one. The first bunny that got up nobody got a shot at. It was somewhere between my Son (Damon) and Lefty. The second bunny we got up went screaming at hyper speed behind Shaun. He took a long shot but I think the furball was outrunning his arrow by then. The third bunny in this hunt got up between myself and Mr. Vic as we were gracefully sliding down into a creekbed. All I saw was a white ball of fur blazing through trees, brush and briars. At this point I had found a Turkey feather (good luck----NOT!!)and Tom had come up on a deer carcass. Probably been eaten by these Demon Bunnies! From this point on I will be losing track of who seen bunnies or not. As we came out of the Jungle undergrowth (a little exaggerated), we came into a creek bottom. This will be better walking (NOT!!!). You know how hard it is to carry your bow with an arrow ready in 4 foot high slew grass? Well at the least we gave our legs some good exercise. We came to another road and took a breather (Not that any of us needed it). After a 5 minute or so relaxing period we turned around and did it again. Now thats dedication or ????? Shortly after crossing the fence and getting our priorities in line, of course a bunny takes off right smack dab in front of us. I don't have an arrow on yet, Shaun is testing his out and Tom doesn't have an arrow ready yet. Guess what? The daring bunny runs right past us and laughs I think as he makes his way by. By now the going is much better and I am going to take a break for supper. Hot Chili soup sounds good at the moment.
-
That last one Court mentioned just after crossing the fence was a hoot. I was stretching my muscles and limbering the selfbow when up hops a rabbit that thought I was sighting down the cane shaft which happened to be pointed his way. Open field straight away 15 yards... right at Tom. I managed to get Tom's attention but to no avail, he was still unloaded from the fence crossing. The rabbit button hooked around him and back to the road ditch and away. It is generally not safe to walk with a nocked arrow but we were all shooting blunts and being careful.
-
Chili was good. As I had stated the walking back was much easier going. We stayed up high and shorter grass. Never saw a rabbit til we came up on a brush draw in the gully. So much brush and small trees have been cut down and piled its great for the bunnies but next to impossible to get them out. As we made our way through and around the brush. Tom or Mr. Vic hollered that they had a bunny going. As I straddled a down tree the critter came blazing by me and headed for Shaun. I thought for a moment it was going to run him down. Just before it got to Shaun he slowed down, turned and found another geat. Shaun made a good shot but it just didn't find the mark. We made our way on across the open field and towards our trucks for a little food and relaxation. Through all of this we had numerous Turkey's in front of us. Lefty could have shot one at close range if the Season would have been open. I think critters know about this and like to tease.
-
As we had reached civilization again we took a break and partook of Venison sticks, sausage, crackers and cheese. We visited with each other and had some drinks to replenish our strength. After about a 20 minute break we decided to go the other direction from where we had been. Even though we are were pretty warm when we got to the trucks we had chilled considerably. The first draw we hit Damon got a bunny up and going towards Mr. Vic. Vic never saw him so we presumed he found a nice burrow to hide in. Shortly after that I got one up. Coming to full draw he had blitzed about 20 yards down the draw. All I could see was brush and trees and never got a shot. Going onward we came to another draw or cliff for me. I quivered my arrow and slid down the ravine landing on my posterior end. I think Damon got a kick out of that one. At this point I need to thank Dave Pagel even though he was in K-zoo. Do to me purchasing his Vortex it came in very handy hooking over growths to let me crawl up the other side of the ravine. Without it I would have never made it and would have fallen prey to these Demon bunnies. I know that would happen as I spied another deer carcass. Probably fallen to these critters. As we all presevered and surged onward we got more turkeys up along the Lake. Hearing someone holler I stared in awe as a fine Whitetail went bounding through the four foot high grasslands headed towards the Lake. It was a neat sight as Mr. Vic simulated a full draw on his quarry and followed through. The majestic Whitetail bounded over the hill headed towards the Lake last we seen. No sooner had that happened and another turkey arose from the grass and sailed out and headed towards the Lake. We didn't think the turkey would make it but he labored through it and landed on the other side. Hooking around the fingers of the Lake we circled and headed back. More rabbits were got up without any shot opportunities. Mr. Vic came to full draw on one but the shot wasn't there. Another one got up for Damon and headed into thick underbrush. Damon and I waded into it and ended up crawling through half of it. As I made it to an area I could stand up in a Grey Squirrel went behind me and up a tree. Hollering at Shaun to let him know he asked me if I had any flu-flu's. Like any self respecting archer I exclaimed yes they are in my side quiver back at the truck (duh). Shaun had one and took a close shot at the Grey about 18 to 20 feet up. Even though he didn't get the Grey it decided it had had enough and came screeching down the tree. Ah-Hah I thought. By the time the little guy hit bottom I was at full draw. I released just as he hit the ground. My Hex head spun him around and he wasn't moving very fast away from me. Damon, I and Lefty went to where I last saw him about 10 yards through the brush. Damon heard him bark but we never could find him. Alas, all I had was some grey hair on my Hex head. Anyway all in all I really did have a great time and would do it again in a minute. It was great spending some quality time with fellow Tradgangers. Whether hunting, stumpshooting or just BS'in it is all worth it. I just thank the Lord for giving me the chance to share such fine Fellowship.
-
Here's one more pic of us. Shaun was verifying the hair on my arrow. Thanks for letting Damon and I hunt with you guys and hopefully we will do'er agin'. Left to Right in the pic is Damon, Tom, Shaun, Mr. Vic and myself. Thanks to Lefty who is still handling the camera. Oh, by the way found our Beagle about an hour after the guys parted way. She was slipping and sliding across Tug Fork Lake. Don't know what she thought she was going to find out there but it was a sight to behold.
-
Awesome guys, thanks for sharing your adventure!!!
Nothing better than the fellowship between Trad Gangers!!
It would be a priveledge to hunt with you guys someday :notworthy:
-
Hey Court,
Great to see the Vortex in use! Funny I shoot that same fletch configuration and color alot for stumping and bale practice. I wish I could have been there. I really like the Keosauqua area. No new bows in Kalamazoo, but some prospects!
Dave
-
Looks like a great day guys. Next time I know I am staying in Iowa for the weekend, I will search some of you out.
Pagel with no new bows...not likely :p . I know in about 10 years there will be a lot of bows around my house that say "Custom Made for Dave Pagel". Still wishing I was a lefty...
-
Kill something for me Vic!! Wish I wasn't so darn busy. Good luck guys!!!
-
uhdet, I did kill a nice 10" pope and young tree stump after a successful stalk. I stalked around down wind within 10 yards and when he had his head turned I drilled him with a cedar. As far as Wabbits. Well I need to get faster on the draw.
-
Anybody have any thoughts on where to do this next month?....anybody know anything about Belva Deer Park in Keokuk county..Sportsman Atlas says 1669 acres,I'm up for there or someplace else.Later!
-
We fish there in the summer but have no idea about the hunting grounds.Clearest water Lake we ever have fished on. Does anyone else know?
-
I sent an e-mail to a friend who is a DNR wildlife biologist asking for rabbit hot spots. Will let you know if and when he gets back to me.
-
I'm in! I have never been there before, but always like seeing something new.
Are any of you going to try and go to the 3D shoot Ron was talking about? I plan on trying to make it.
-
Chris , Court, Shaun, keep me informed. Im ready for another hunt. Tom
-
Chickened out!!! Damon and I went out and got a truckload of firewood this morning. Was going to see if we could find a couple bunnies to shoot at. Temp at -20 Windchill and we decided to come back home and enjoy the wood stove.
-
hey i keep hearing all of yall speak bowfishing, if anyone out here dont know im a carp shooting nut, when it warms up whos up for s.e ia carp shoot, just to throw the idea, i can run 3-4 on my rig....17 goot xpress, 70 hp johnson in progress and 5x6 deck....trying to think warm as my thermometer is on the wrong side of 0 today, i can get pics up when i get them all reloaded on the dell
-
Court i wondered if you would go, i was sitting here in the rocker next to the woodstove with a hot cup of coffee watching all the crazy people going to town and never seen you go by. Hope my firewood holds out until this is over. Ok, Redneck I'm game this summer, got a few hot spots if you don't mind thirty pound carp at the end of your arrow.
-
mr vic.....when and were, day or nite, warm or cold...after a trip in feb last year a glowing 5k generator muffalor is mans best friend on the river.....ohh all fish were safe, im on osky
-
Hey Vic I guess we could have came by and stopped at your place. Coffee and a hot woodstove doesn't sound bad. Damon likes bowfishing on the backwaters up here when its flooded. Usually use the canoe for that but its better than a trolling motor when you arrow a #30+ Buffalo.
-
Fires always warm and coffee always hot for friends and strangers. Maybe next time.
-
I'm in for some fish shooting. Did it when I was a kid and just bought some fishing gear to give it a try again this year. I got a 16 foot john boat too. We was snagging a few spoonbill below lock and dam #18 before it iced up. If we get a thaw and someone wants to give that a try, just let me know. Not archery, but fun!
-
just lemme know, once i get my 70 paid for im sure the freeze will be off and good to go shoot fish, have any of you guys figured more out on the belva deere rabbit hunt, thats pretty close to osky
-
I just suggested Belva Deer Park...I'm up for anywhere thats accessable to all..open for suggestions.
-
Belva Deer is next to the keokuk co sports club!!3D shoot Feb 17-18.Don't know about the bunnie population in the area!!!!
Lefty i'll keep you informed,i have a couple friends that i'm sure will be there, maybe we can get a few of us together.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ron
-
Ron,
I am going to plan on making the shoot if I can. Which day are you going to shoot?
Has anyone hunted Belva Deer area before? Any rabbits? This new snow should help out. When does everyone what to try and meet?
-
Chris
I'm thinking Sunday because of wrestling sectionals, but if saturday is the day you can make it i'll go saturday,i'm pretty much open!!I'm planning on going one of the days.Keep in touch and let me know if you can make it and what day!I'll get a hold of a couple friends(trad) and see if there coming!!

Ron
-
Had a dentist appt. this afternoon, so went out to chase some bunnies this morning. Hunted public land right here around Mt Pleasant. Heat wave. Must have warmed up to 8 or so, overnight. Got up 3 rabbits, no shots to much brush and they were to quick. Got my limit of stumps though. Nice morning to be out. My MOAB is shooting sweet! Good to have it back!

steve
-
Is a febuary hunt going to go off?..Date?...location?
-
is there going to be anything going on with a second bunny hunt
-
Ron,
I am planning on the shoot this weekend. What day and time works best, for you and others? Didn't you say the Belva Deere area is close to the shoot? If others are interested, how about we meet for the shoot and practice up and then chase some bunnies after? Now I have never hunted this area, or even been there, so someone will need to direct the hunting aspect, if anyone is interested.
If folks aren't interested in hunting, I am still planning on the shoot and hope some others can make it. Ron, can you give us directions to the shoot and a meeting place? Sounds like it is going to warm up nicely!
Chris
-
Chris
I'm going to be there Sunday and a couple(trad) friends around 9 am.Belva deer camp ground is very close and i think the public hunting area would only be about 3 miles from the 3d shoot! If you come from Mt Pleasant you would take 218 north of ainsworth to G36 go east, that would take you to the junction of hwy 1(would say around 7 to 10 miles)G36 will then be hwy 92 keep going east threw west chester, you will go by the junction of keota then harper the next town is sigorney.I'm guessing about 3 miles before sigorney is the turn off,NORTH,There is a sign, but be carefull it's right after the top of a hill,it's about 2 miles down the road.I would say it is 7 to 10 miles past the harper turn off.it's a gravel road!!
Hope this don't mess you up!!!!!
Maybe a few more can make it.!!!!!
Let me know if this has got you messed up!!!
We can meet at the shoot around 9 if thats o.k.
Wish i could try the bunnies but have to go to the hospital after the shoot!!!!
The shoot is a chili shoot 20 targets and all the chili you can eat.I believe it was $10.00 last month
Ron
-
Ron,
I'll see ya there at 9AM.
Chris
-
I think you mean WEST on G-36 and Hwy 92!
Is the 3-D shoot at the hunt club on Hwy 149 where they hold the dog trails? It is about 40 miles from my house. I will see you there 9AM Sunday if I can get away.
-
There were a couple of us that were going out Sunday morning up around Iowa City. If you don't mind us joining you we might come down ther, then do a little ice fishing afterward.
-Ben
-
GREAT,Lefty!!!!!
Shaun, your right, WEST!!! Hope you can make it!!!!
Ben,that would be GREAT,come on down.!!
Ron
-

Ron
-
You guys have a great time tomorrow and let us know how it went. Damon and I went out this evening. Rabbits three, us zero. I had a running shot through a ditch and brush. Didn't get the bunny but I did get an old bucket. Took a while to get the woody back out as the hex head didn't want to pull through.
-
I'll be there two friends from ottumwa and a guy from Albia(sp?).See ye there Chris and who ever else can make it!!!!!!
Ron
-
The crew today was Chris (Lefty), Don (Kelley40) and myself (Shaun) and a couple stick bow shooters from down by Ottumwa. We met at the Keokuck County Archers "Chili shoot" which is a winter 3-D gathering - $10 for fourty targets and all the chili you can eat.
Here Ron bears down on a bear - out of hibernation a little early.
-
One of the fellows from Ottumwa (Don, help me out with the names) takes aim with his self bow. We lost very few arrows in spite of the deep snow and shots taken from the wheelie stake like this. The 3-D deer is about 40 yards just over the two stumps.
Don pulling arrows from a thoughly killed bob cat.

#40 was an elevated stand, the other Ottumwa archer takes a bead on a bedded buck.

Which we all managed to hit
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/shaunw/SEIArabbits009.jpg)
No action shots of me and Chris. But the two of us did chase rabbits for an hour or so after the chili lunch. We saw 4 bunnies but had no shots. Home with tired legs and all my arrows.
-
Thanks for posting Shaun. Glad to hear you didn't lose any arrows in the snow. How did you guys like the 3D shoot. I used to shoot there all the time.
-
That's Dave Meyers from ottumwa shooting the self bow.In the elevated stand is Jason also from ottumwa.
I had a GREAT time, met lefty for the first time and got to see shaun again!!
Great pics shaun, hope everyone enjoyed shooting some foam.Beautiful day and the Chili was very good.
Hope to get together again soon.Glad to hear you did see some bunnies.
Keep in touch we may have to get something going for a weekend in Oct or Nov.
In the first pic with back to us is Jason to his left is Dave then myself Kelley40 and Lefty with shaun taking the pics!
Ron :clapper:
