Title: JAVA MAN Elkheart vs. Falcon? Advise Please!
Post by: Jack Hoyt 75 on November 11, 2014, 11:26:00 AM
I am up on Gregg's list and have specs figured out.  Going to have a bow made that is 58" 45# at 28" with dark Cocobola riser and some crazy Myrtle veneers from the Wood Vault.

MY QUESTION:

I was going to get a Falcon since similar to Elkheart but little larger riser and wider limbs.  I like a little more mass on the riser I think.

Gregg seems partial to the Elkheart and it seems wise to go with what the bowyer suggestion.

I am just looking for some details or specifics on the two and pros or cons of each??  Why you like one versus the other?  Hearing from someone who has shot both would be great.  Thanks for the info and help.    :help:

Can't go wrong either way and very excited to get a bow from Gregg.  His experience and reputation speaks for itself!

This is what his website says:

"ELKHEART" Named for author Dave Petersen, the Elkheart is a short mild forward handle deflex-reflex longbow.  Extremely smooth drawing for its length.  Quiet. light, and compact.  The Elkheart comes in 52"-58" lengths for draw lengths from under 28" up to 32".

FALCON:  Very similar to the Elkheart, but in longer lengths of 58" and 60".

I went 58" Elkheart and have no regrets. My understanding is the Elkheart has a shorter riser and longer working limbs then a Falcon at the same length.

Talk to Gregg directly on this.  Trust me.  You will get more energy out of the 58" Elkheart.  IMHO the 58" Falcon borders on obsolete.  What are we talking, 1oz? 2oz mass difference? Elkheart has more efficiency built into the limb.

Me I went with 56" Elkheart at just over 29" draw and flat out adore it.  My #1.

The Elkheart and Falcon and are somewhat similar.  The Elkheart has much more reflex in the limbs.

I just made a 60" Elkheart that turned out quite nice.  There's some really long armed folks out there!      :coffee:

Elkheart in the length you like with a phenolic I Beam. If you're after more mass weight I have a Bowbolt 58" Super Shrew with a solid black phenolic riser that's a little heftier than my other bows built by Gregg.

Never had the pleasure of shooting an Elkheart, or a Classic Hunter. Greg was kind enough to come up with a "test" bow for me some months back; 58" Falcon. Had no intention of buying at that time, just wanted to get a feel for one of his bows.

Couldn't bring myself to send it back, ended up pleading my case to my dear wife, and got the green light...
I absolutely love the bow. Light, maneuverable, amazing grip, quick and quiet. Smooth. Remarkably "paintable", get to know the bow and it shoots right where you look.
And, extremely easy on the eyes. I really lucked out with this one for looks and specs being spot on for me.

Cons: what cons? If I get to try an Elkheart sometime, I may be in trouble. Meanwhile, I just have no need to wish for another bow.

I've had both and my vote goes to a 58" Elkheart.  They are both fine bows.  My son has a 56" EH that pulls as smooth to my 31" as my 60" Falcon did.  I personally like the limb profile a little more on the Elkheart and it seems a little faster.  You can't go wrong with either one but in my opinion Gregg's Elkheart blew the doors off my conventional thinking regarding a bow less than 60".  I have two more on order if that tells you anything.  Take care.  Here are pics of my son's all Bocote 56" Elkheart.

It darn well is.  Gregg sent me F/D charts on the Elkheart, Falcon, Helms Deep etc.  The new 60" has the flattest curve of all of them, not that that the rest aren't smooth as hell.  Gregg has the recipe down that's for sure.

I haven't had the pleasure of shooting the Falcon yet, but I've shot a little bit of everything... and the Elkheart is the finest shooting bow I've owned....!! I would recommend the bow bolt with the phenolic in the riser...it gives it just enough weight to really give it a perfect feel...

I hope that Gregg has an Elkheart hanging on the wall over the holidays so I can get a good close look at one.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of Gregg Coffey's bows. He is a tremendous bowyer, who turns out some really beautiful bows.

I believe he is now doig a 64" Falcon called Falcon XL.

Has anyone tried that?  Its sounds like it would be one hell of a stable bow...  I am interested to hear of any experiences..

I have a Shrew CH and its a wonderful bow.

Cheers
Alex

And I really love that bow now that I own it Guss!!   :)
It is a 54" bowbolt t/d and draws very smooth at my 28" draw and is plenty quick!!    :archer2:

No-one tried the longer version?

I thought it would really appeal to the longbow guys...

I am very tempted by these
