I posted a bit back that a group of (non trad!)guys had moved in and completely taken over the public area I have been hunting for 15 years.
I recently pulled all my stands and moved on. No problems on my end. It is public land and I fully understand that.
I have found a private piece of land in RI that I'll be putting my time into.
Now, in the mean time, I get a text from one of them (whom I only know through texting...NEVER even met the guy....I know the guy who's house they park at so I gave them my cell just to try and coordinate back in early October) that is totally bullsh#t that I pulled MY stands without letting him know. He has been sitting in two of them (without my knowledge or permission) and now has no place to sit!!!!!
Literally totally pissed at me!!!!!
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: :jumper: :jumper:
WOW! The nerve of some people.... that is unbelievable!
I've gotta get outta here, this place is not for me.
I always say there are less than 10% of people in this world even worth talking to. The older I get the more I think that percentage is a little high.

It's cruel but I agree.
How dare you not fund someone else's hobby. Haha
I think Rob W. hit it on the head. It's a crazy world! Good luck David with your new hunting location.
Bernie
I'm appalled that you would pull your stands without consulting these guys for their permission. Maybe you should apologize to them, take them out for dinner, and buy them a new truck for your thoughtlessness.
Some people's kids....
Too funny guys!
Sort of reminds me of a text message I received the other day, clearly intended for somebody else. I thought the sender might appreciate knowing whoever he wanted to send it to didn't get it, so I texted back "wrong #." He texted me back and wanted to know who I was, and when I wouldn't tell him, he started swearing at me by text!
In regard to the OP:
After covering basic social niceties, I would politely tell him to shove is head up his a#% and see if it fits.
I agree with the 10% rule btw. Its sad. General Patton and his generation and those who fought for him would be appalled. You should have offered to pay the jokers health insurance or house payment too. Heck there's a-holes in every generation.
People will text, email and post things they would NEVER say in person.
It's a new society guys, we are the odd one out.

Something tells me that the guy KNOWS that it fits, because it sounds as though he KEEPS it there on a regular basis. :readit:

Very true!

I am PROUD to be so. :wavey:
I also agree that the 10% rule may be a little optimistic. That's one of many reasons why I thank God for Tradgang. It is a constant reminder that there ARE still good people out there. I need to be reminded of that quite frequently.
How did you respond?
I'd send him back a txt, letting him know that Dick's & Gander Mt. Have all of their treestands on clearance...
I'm not positive, but didn't you previously say that it was a bunch of police officers that took over that spot? WTH is wrong with people? Maybe they won't hunt it at all since no stands are supplied. Morons.
Pinko, commi, thumb sucking, bed setters.
That is awesome!
Had a guy come in a public place last yr and hang stands in the area. Met him talked to him - good feller - had his own stands and he scouted well. Thing we had conflict on is he hung two sets within 15 yards of my sets? He moved em though ---
Unbelievable. No other words.
you sure he wasn't funnin' ya? That doesn't always come across well in texts,
I think he was messing with ya. If he was serious he would have asked you when you were gonna return your stands to him. Sounds too funny but as you can imagine I see similar behavior on a daily for the last 20 years. If he was serious you oughta just give him a big hug and wish him good luck. Get you a NY license, Ive got millions of trees for you to climb. We'll have no hassles here on the land I hunt.
I saw a figure of 10% a few replies back and I think that was the percentage of good guys.
I'm inclined to believe it's the other way around - that it is really a tiny, little percentage of people who are the bad guys. Isn't it a shame that such a small number of people can really screw up your day for you?
It's a shame there isn't someplace we can send them for remedial training. Like out in the desert with one canteen of water to share between them. They would deserve each other.
Now that there are not stands to sit in they may leave the property.
The more I'm around people the more I prefer animals!
Unbelievable. That would be worth putting in some editorial section of the local paper. Upset you moved YOUR stands. . . you have got to be kidding??
Man, that just stinks. Some guys have some real nerve!
Bisch
Wow i don't have the foggiest idea what to say to that!!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead:
Your selfishness may come back to bite you if one of them pulls you over..... :biglaugh:
Once again...people never cease to amaze!
Public land with public stands..what a find
The not-so-nice side of me would be tempted to haul a couple ladder stands out there with the ladders hacksawed about about half way through...here ya go #!@*!..sit on this!
Crass!...on the part of the texter.
God bless,Mudd
good thing you pulled them, just thing of the law suit and expense if one of them got hurt in one of there stands that belonged to you!
The next thing would be this guy wanting your help dragging out the deer he shot from your stand! :knothead:
You can't leave stands on public land in NC. Kind of a pain but it eliminates a lot of problems.
In Delaware you can leave your stand, but it becomes "first come, first served"-anyone can hunt the stand you left and you can't do anything about it.
Heh, I wonder if that works for cars left unlocked in public parking lots. If no one is in them, can you get in and hang out for awhile?
:bigsmyl:
Hopefully it was meant as humorous, but either way I find it funny. good luck on the new property!
Never mind it. I hear private property in RI can be pretty sweet.
I've actually been lucky and not had any drama on public land. Aside from a few years hunting the family farm after getting married - I've been on public land. i've had crowded areas and other hunters/walkers coming in on my set up but never anyone approaching me.
I actually had more drama on the family farm with the guys hunting the neighbors than I ever had on public land.
Hope you can find a better place to hunt. No one likes dealing with that.
Seriously. I could comment. But it's all been said way too well....
Wow...speechless
I hunt some areas that require hunters to remove stands at the end of shooting hours. It's a great rule that prevents territoriality and conflict and promotes safety. The minor inconvenience is a small price to pay.
Perhaps a compromise is in order. I'd text him back and offer to put your stands back up so he can use it. I'd then ask him to leave his keys in his vehicle when he's hunting so you could use it to go visit his wife/girlfriend (or both). After all, he won't have any use for either if he's away hunting. Remember to be polite.

Of course some guys woulda stolen your stand. Guess it coulda been worse. Pretty nervy of him though!

hahahahahaha
id say paybacks are hell. if he is indeed a police officer, go to his office and help yourself to his share of the doughnuts..

I'd offer to rehang them for him...for a small fee that is...let's say the MSRP of the stands and $100.00 an hour labor charge.
Incredible. Rob W, you're onto something with your 10% rule !
that sucks David. I've been sticking to a small piece of private land I have permission on. In the past I've found bow hooks left at my stand...so I dropped them that day. later on I found a new stand in the exact same tree.
I'd never sit in another stand without permission. in fact I wouldn't with permission in most cases either! the hunt wont have the same value without the honest effort of finding the perfect spot and hanging the stand.
Send him a bill for the lease of your property!
I was standing on a public road waiting for my son to hike off a mountain on Friday. A guy drove up and said, "are you supposed to be here?" I recognized the gate at the end of the lane was locked with a no trespass sign on it, but I was in a public land strip. I have no idea who he was, probably letting me know the land behind the gate was posted. I believe in personal property rights-having been in three conflicts with governments that take what they want, I fully support private ownership--but not of public roads. Some people need a glass navel, so they can see where they are going!
You should go back and scout the property you left. They might have only been there for the convenience and won't keep going there now that the stands are gone.
If so, you could go back and ground hunt the property... If that's even worth it to you. But, if you already have private property lined up.
"I'd never sit in another stand without permission. in fact I wouldn't with permission in most cases either! the hunt wont have the same value without the honest effort of finding the perfect spot and hanging the stand."
Right on the money Marc.
I get that its public land. I also get that if I left a stand in a tree it means another guy might not be able to sit in that tree if Im not there.
I even get if someone has values that would allow them to climb into another's stand on public land(because Lord knows there is only one tree in Massachusetts and there is absolutely NO other tree to sit in)....
But to be angry that I didn't tell them I pulled MY stands....I don't even know these guys!
Anyway, I'm beating a dead horse.
I'd rather read about all the deer you guys are seeing than my "woe is me" thread!
Nice leather work Nick!
Yorn, i live in S RI.I know what you mean!! I think you should visit his wife while he is hunting. Hell he's using your stand, it's only fitting that you return the favour,,,LOL. Wonder ow that would go over....
Tell them you will put the stands back up as soon as you get you guide fee! What he said to you takes a lot of nerve or just stupidity.
Time to move to the Midwest if you ask me. Good luck to you for rest of the season! Text that guy a pic of your big buck once you get him!
I would install a hanging rope, point him to that direction and tell him to feel free to use it! :readit:
Or am I too cruel now????
If have told him you had no choice you found another spot with two B&C bucks on it and then BLOCK his number!!!!
If public land I'd probably start taking the dog for walks when they hunt. Just stay 100 yards from them. Or go squirrel hunting on the ground. Probably legal.
I got to my public land stand in Kansas last week to find the pegs gone (found out later that they were not stolen). So I found a place on the ground to sit, unknowingly 100 yards from another guy, and he got down from his stand twenty minutes after legal light raging mad and hurling threats. Thought for sure there was going to be a scrap, but he did not follow through with his words. People are funny. Wish he had stayed put because we both had a good chance of deer coming through.
It all worked out as later that morning I got to watch my good buddy put an awesome four hour stalk on a big muley and kill it with his recurve. I would not have been able to be there if my morning hunt went as planned.
With a mentality like that I bet he bought his bow with welfare money...oh well better than beer and cigs...maybe.
