As much as I love my Simmons (and the blood trails they leave) I would like to find another broadhead with similar proportions (width verses length) that has a flat blade instead of concanve. Just takes too much effort and special equipment to keep that edge on the simmons (sorry Rada doesn't even come close for me). I enjoy being able to use a nicholson file and leather to get a razor edge.
Anyone have any suggestions for a replacement head? I like the grizzlies but want a wider head.
Zephyr sasquatch is 1 9/16 wide, abowyer large bonehead 1 1/2, magnus 1 is 1 1/2. Cant think of any others but wish there were more wide heads as I like using flying meat cleavers for fast results and short blood trails.............just dont dig the new trendy skinny heads myself and use big 160 snuffers for 95% of my hunting........
There is also a Deadhead knock off out there called a Dreadhead. its a pretty wide head but dont have any experience with them personally. I have some contact info for the makers if you are interested let me know

I do mine differntly. I shoot Simmons and I can get shaving sharp in about 5min. I use a smiths sportsmans pal, and I ALWAYS steel my heads and knives but Rob has great luck with his file
Zwickey Delta 4 blade.
I got some of the Zephyr Sirocco. They are an inch and 5/16. They fly good but they are still a wider cut than most.

Magnus classic and Zepher are both huge

Yep, love them easy to sharpen and best price out there. Been in business like 78 years that says a lot.

The Howard Hill heads are a true 3" to 1" ratio and roughly 160gr.. They are one of the best flying heads out there. This is JMO so take it with a grain of salt.

Zwickey delta, but if you're having trouble sharpening the simmons with a file try getting a chainsaw file to sharpen them with and then glue a piece of leather around a round rod (old arrow shaft, wooden dowel, etc...) and rub a small amount of toothpaste onto the leather. You should be able to get the heads pretty sharp just using the file and then stropping on the leather.
Big 3's have served me well.
Friend - I am not familiar with Big 3, how carries them?
DaveT1963...A custom ordered VPA for Big Jim...1.5" cut.. 3 blade...300 gn...Big Jim submitted an inquiry earlier this year to justify a specific quantiy expense justification. The quantity desried was either met or exceeded within a few days.

I sure am partial to my German Kinetic Silverflame XL's!

magnus 1 160 gr 1 1/2" wide, easy to sharpen and inexpensive or VPA 3 blades1 1/4" (wider than standard model) for more $
if you use a heavy bow, big jim 3 blades all the way....
if you're truly looking for STRAIGHT edges..
Either Abowyer Large bonehead 1 1/2"..may be too heavy.
Or magnus classic in the 1 1/2 width ( not sure what that model is called)
Or Zwickey delta at 1 3/8"
I don't care for the zephyr..the stainless is too soft and doesn't keep an edge very well.
All the other wide heads I can think of are not straight edges...either concave or convex
Check out Mike Palmer's "Extreme Cut" broad heads. They are made by Muzzy for him and are a larger version of the Phantom broad head. I'm hopefully going to shoot a deer this year with them.
original Magnus I.
i call it the flying hatchet. flies great, and is huge. devastating holes.
I use the Abowyer Boneheads for exactly the reason you are switching. I have tried the Zephyrs and my experience is they dont hold an edge and whistle in flight. I sharpen my Boneheads on a Worksharp wheel and they get sharper than anything I have ever seen and hold the edge well. They are expensive but I have used the same 3 heads for 5 years now and have killed a a bunch of critters.

Lot's of good ideas...AND for sharpening your Simmons, the Centaur Archery sharpening system does an excellent job - fast - on these. It also is an excellent general purpose sharpening system.
I use the Centaur Battle Axe on deer and bear and they are excellent, but you will have the same issues as your Simmons.
Jim also has a video on his site using the sharpener on his BHs.
Give the Palmer Extreme broadheads a look! They cut Huge holes and are very easy to sharpen. I could stick 4 fingers in the entrance hole of the buck I shot a few days ago. They penetrate well also. And they are one of my most accurate heads. I like them a lot!
Also Ace Express in 165gr.

Buddy shot this today at a steep angle with a RADA sharpened Simmons head. Went through heavy bone, severed major artery, bled like it was coming out a fire hose. Died on the spot. Just sayin.

Congrats to your buddy on a nice buck. Rada just doesn't produce edge I like but obviously it will work.
