Title: Known FOC combos. Post Up!
Post by: snowplow on October 31, 2014, 04:55:00 PM
As you can see by my rash of posts lately I am trying to come up with the highest FOC combo while  staying in the realm of 10 gpp. Let's start a thread of known combos to help others along!

My best is my 10 year old Arrow Dynamics Traditional Lites (with external carbon fiber footing), 24 gr insert/225 gr point, 565 gr total arrow @ 25%

From stuff I can currently find available, my best is-

30" Gold Tip Velocity 400, 100 gr insert/200 gr point, 541 gr total arrow @ 24% FOC.

I have observed that adding 1" (at least within the range of 29-32") will increase FOC by about 1%. And a glue in nock adapter will increase FOC by about 1%

What have you guys figured out?

Trad Only 300 cut to 30.5 inches, 50 grain brass insert, 100 grain steel broadhead adapter. 190 grain Tuffhead Meathead: total arrow weight 677 gr, 24.5% FOC. Shooting out of a 57# longbow drawing to 29.5 inches.

Killed 4 coyotes in Oct with that setup. Shot one from breast plate to hip facing me and all I had showing was the fletchings. Shot another through the hips at 40 yds and nothing showing but fletchings. Can't wait to see what it does on a whitetail.

GT 55/75, 100gr brass insert, 150gr field point/broadhead, 10.6gpp, 529gr, 22.1FOC.

I shoot that arrow from my 50.1# Sarrels Blueridge longbow, 64", 29.5"DL.

NOTE: This combo is known to work for me and how I shoot. No telling what it will do for someone with a dramatically different DL or shooting style!

Too technical for me. I like heavy heads, but have never paid attention to % foc. Complicates things.
I pick what I like to shoot for broadheads and make the correct shafts work for it. Having said that, they are always heavy.

Adding shaft length actually reduces FOC as does adding any weight to the nock end. When you get in to the high 20% range, adding weight at the nock end has quite a bit more influence than the same amount of weight at the point.

My specs are in my signature below. I use 100 grain brass inserts. I got my arrows and my Kanati bow from BigJim.

Gold Tip Ultralight 300.  31.25", TuffHead 300, 200 gr. insert/adapter combo, 50 gr. Bigfoot footing, 3" Rocket fin fletching, 830 grains 32% FOC shot from 71@31 Black Widow PSAX.

I like high FOC, but have not been concerned about GPP.  My combos are more in the 15 GPP range.  But, I shoot wood and that has inherent limitations.

Carbon Express 250  29 1/4 "
300 grain TH
75 grain titanium adaptor
100 grain brass arrow insert
25 grain alum. footing
*    total 500 grains up front
2 .5 inch A & A feather
Total arrow weight 770 grains
UFOC  aprox. 32 %
55 lb long bow at my 28" draw length
-------------------------------------
I took the stock nock collar off the arrow which weighs 5 grains.
(By removing 1 grain off rear is like adding 5 to 7 up front.) By removing the nock collar and removing cap wrap and reducing the feather size i was able to increase FOC approximately 2 %

UFOC IS NOT FOR EVERY ONE BUT FOR THOSE THAT PUT THE EXTRA EFFORT IN THEY ARE USUALLY REWARDED WITH A GREAT FLYING ,QUIET, AND BETTER PENETRATING ARROW.

Some just love to tinker, nothing wrong with repositioning weight on a 10gpp arrow, Yes  a low foc 10gpp arrow will work fine but,

IMHO the higher foc arrow is more stable, both with bare shaft and fletched shaft shooting.

Katman...I agree 100%

I guess I think kinda of like Big Jim on the subject. I dont set out with any % goal. But I will be the first to say that an arrow that is front heavy just flies better than one that is not.

I shoot mostly wood arrows, they all wear 160+ bh's just for that reason...and the heavier BH tend to be more durable.

My favorite carbon is a Heritage 150 29.5" with 100gg insert and 180g of Delta on the front(610g) out of a 54 @ 29 Hill style bow..its a beautiful thing to watch it fly.

But I cant tell you what % foc they are, but they work real well.

Without a doubt the best flying arrows I have are from my efforts with UEFOC.

Victory VForce HV 300 V6 - 29.625" BOP. 3" A&A fletch, 100 gr. brass insert, 75 gr. adapter and 235 gr. Grizzly Kodiak.  Total arrow wt. 650 gr.s and an FOC of 31.6%

60# R/D

Agreed...lots of other more important things to spend my effort on...all the foc in the world will not make up for a bad release, hitting an animal poorly, broadheads that are not sharp enough or arrow flight that is less than it could be

I dont understand. Here's my take on this.

It seems the question is often misrepresented. It is not; 'is FOC more important than a good shot, good release, knowing how to operate a bow, using a broadhead etc.' As I dont think a lot of guys stay home from hunting or shooting to instead crunch numbers. They do it in the off time.

The question is (in this case) asking to see proven combo's to get an idea of what is obtainable with current materials. Not to waste time, but actually to save time. Many argue that they have enough penetration but I am looking at this mainly for forgiveness. And I would argue that it is important. As an ethical hunter I want the best kill possible. We all know stuff happens. When it does, you cant have TOO MUCH forgiveness.

I have one arrow combination that flies out of 2 different bows with the only change being point weight.
Recurve 56# Victory VForce HV V3 29.75 ,3" fletching  ,3.875 arrow wrap 1" footing 12grs, 100 grain brass insert,400 grain point= total arrow weight 736grs, FOC 34.87

Longbow 54# same arrow as above point weight 350grs, =total arrow weight 684grs, FOC 33.19

Different bow designs and needs have driven the final arrow designs for different 51 -52# bows

Red Stag...March 2014 in NZ:

Victory HV350...100 gn insert...250 gn BH...563 total...29.8% EFOC

Current:

Victory HV300...50 gn insert...300 gn BH...574 total..29% EFOC

In the past, have used the following arrow with much success:

Victory HV350...100 gn insert...300 gn BH...611 total...31.5% Ultra EFOC
