Title: Bowyer's Challenge: Ground Blind Bow
Post by: NDTerminator on September 29, 2007, 06:07:00 AM
Here's a challenge to all bowyers.  I all ready emailed this to Tim Finley at Kota Bows, but I figured why not throw it out to everyone.

With the exception of Lee's Dark Archer, no one makes a dedicated Ground Blind Bow.  There are a few such as the Bear K-Mag and CM Raven that generally fit the requirements, but are not designed for the purpose from the start.

How about it guys?

52"-56" one piece recurve with good cast for that 20 yards max shot, large sight window for a good picture in low light/through mesh windows, dark wood limbs/veneers/glass with a flat or satin finish to help hide any movement.

Can't be that difficult, and for sure there's a market for them...

Bob Morrison, Harry Elburg, and a few others produce bows in that length. Give Bob a call. I shot one at Comptons and it shot well.

I shoot a 58" Horne Brushbow for just about all occasions and it's worked out really well. I think that bow has 18-20 big game kills and at least 3/4 of them were from off the ground. CK

A 60-inch Great Northern Ghost has worked well for me out of a Double Bull blind.

Sheepeater "Obsidian" from Black Mountain Bows (a sponsor here) if you need that length, but have a longer draw length (29"+).  It is a 50" nock-to-nock unstrung bow that is about 48" long in action.  Dark color scheme would be perfect of blinds. I've heard great things about them.

My Zipper takedown is outside your length at 60" but is very manageable in my Eastman LX-5 blind. Best thing is he stained it black because he didn't like how the glass looked and knocked $150 off the price. Shoots great and blends in with the dark interior.

Rivers Edge makes a 54" Arroyo, it is by far the most easy to shoot short bow I have ever shot. It does not stack or pinch all th eway out to 30"s. It has a static limb tip and that really opens up and makes the bow very forgiving. It shoots like a 62" recurve. I am very impressed and wil be ordering another very soon. Shawn

Shawn, do you think those static tips act at all like the siyahs on the horse bows? I use to have a Saluki and I always felt like the last part of the draw was the smoothest and was due to those siyahs. Even made a comment that it felt like let-off and was nearly banned to the nether regions!

Add to the list Jack Kempf Little grizzly 48" or 50", Rodney wright's 46" Stalker, Dan Toelke's 52",Bret Frelinks Hornet52",Brent Rudolph's 50" Sheepeater Obsidian,I think Bob Morrison makes a 52"? Ron Leclair has a short bow too and there are many more.
Just order any of these in dark woods and or black glass.

There are several bowyers out there making short bows.  Roy Coursey of Cooks Mtn Archery makes a short bow for using in a tree stand or blind.  I was hunting with Roy for bears when he used his proto type to take a bear.  Ron King of Fox Archery makes a 54" Recurve for this purpose.  He uses it to hunt from a blind.  Jim Neaves of Centaur Archery builds a 54" bow.  All are excellant shooters.  Brock

You may want to call Mike Fedora(Sr) in Richland PA. He has a website and advertises in TB Magazine every issue. He is known for his recurves including shorter ones. He's been a full time bowyer for over 40 years so he knows what he's doing. I own 3 Fedoras myself including a 56" one piece recurve and it's a real beauty that shoots great.

Shrew Lil' Favorite!!  54" recurve that smokes a heavy arrow.  After I got mine I got rid of my Chek-mate Raven because it couldnt even come close to the performance of the Shrew.
