Title: Gold tip spine help
Post by: Caleb the bow breaker on October 23, 2014, 10:54:00 AM
Guys,

I would like some opinions on spine for my current set up.

Specs

Bow
RER Arroyo 53lbs at 29.5"
Finger Release
FF string
off the shelf nothing fancy for rest or strike plate

Arrow
30.5"
100gr brass insert
200 gr BH
3X5" fletch

So currently i am shooting some Gold Tip Vapors (I think) but I know the deflection if 400.  They shoot really good for me. However all the spine charts and Stu's calculator indicate that I need to be in the 300 deflection zone.  I dont know if I should mess with success or just keep shooting what I shoot.  In any case the shafts I have now arent available so i was looking at either the GT traditionals or the CE heritage.

Any input is greatly appreciated?

Ohh, and just in case anybody was wondering,  I am not changing mid season.  I have plenty of arrows for the year but just looking down the road.

C

If 400 deflection is working for you now I would stick with it.

Stick with what works with your bow.  Some bows just digest arrows differently.  Remember the calculators are there for a starting point.

I am shooting a 50#@29" I pull 29.75 so I am close to you.  I am currently shooting the Gold Tip Trads 55-75 32" 100grn brass insert with 165 grn simmons sharks.  They fly great.

I'm shooting a similar set up as your bow and the Goldtip 5575 trads shoot great for me. You are in the ballpark.

I went through a lot of gyrations trying to get good flight. Was a little embarrassed when I found the problem was more with my nocking point height and brace. I shoot a 30.25" 5575 with a 29" draw. 55lb blacktail with SBD string. 100 grain insert and 170 grain zwickeys. 585 grains and great flight.

wow! that's very close to my setup. RER Retro. 53#@28" (I shoot a bit over that. maybe even 29"). 31" GT XT Hunters 7595s (the black ones, .400 spine), 100 grain brass inserts, 150 grain BH (total 250 up front), 3 5" fletches).

they fly like darts for me. field points and broadheads. don't mess with it if it works!

also, if you find that this setup is close, but a tiny bit stiff, don't go cutting your arrows and messing with point weight. I simply stuck a 1/16" piece of felt on my strike plate, and now everything is dead center.

examine whether your shelf is cut-to-center, not quite, or just over, and a small adjustment there can save you a ton of tuning headache. I started out using Stu's calculator, but ended up with a good bit stiffer setup than it recommended. you can't argue with good arrow flight, though. if it works, stick with it.
