Title: What's your top favorite accessory in the woods.
Post by: Mudd on October 22, 2014, 08:33:00 PM
I've been thinking about this over the last week and figured out how much I love and depend on one of my favorite accessories.

A few weeks ago I had another added in with this one but as the mosquitoes become less an issue the "Thermacell" has dropped down on the list of "must-haves" but even when it was important there was another that always at the top and it does a great job for me.

Tell us yours........

I'll pop back in a little later and disclose what I feel in my Number "1" accessory....lol

God bless,Mudd

depends on the day Mudd.  On one day I really need the Thermocell.  On another I may REALLY need the TP (and I don't mean target panic)>

TP is a good one.  I have come of the woods minus a shirt sleeve more times than I care to admit.  I would say my knife.  I forgot it one hunt this past weekend and was amazed how many times I reached to my hip to find it not there.

1. Thermacell
2. DEET or herbal skeeter spray
3.  Skeeter proof clothing
4.  Face mask/ ghillie hat
5.  The rest of it...

Can you tell I live in FL??  :D

Permethrin based spray for ticks followed closely by cough drops. Non DEET mosquito spray is third on the list.

A flashlight, or a knife, but that's pretty obvious, so I'll say my fold out limb saw and/or my mini limb pruner/shears.  I have a Thermacell that has never left the box after owning it for 2 years, and a GPS unit that has remained boxed for about four years.  They seemed like such good ideas at the time, though.

Accessories, traditional Bowhunting, is supposed to be about keeping it simple, accessories minimal, but since you asked, and being a guy that likes to build as much of my stuff as I can, I'd have to the new quiver I'm using this year, the Short Trail...
Thanks,

#1 would have to be a knife.  But #2 . . . possibly #1 if I thought longer . . . is a resealable 15 count travel size pack of moist wipes.

I have a strand out of the inside of para cord tied to my top string loop. It's about 8" long, and I took my fingers and rubbed it until it frayed out. I ground hunt with bow accross my lap, with a quick glance I know the wind direction, no more moving or reaching for my puff bottle

A hankercheif is something I always use. A lot of the other stuff mentioned is pretty standard stuff
The one thing I bought this year that I'm using a lot more than I imagined is a hydration bladder pack. It's so nice when I'm walking to my stand and my mouth gets a little dry I just grab the tube and take a sip. When I'm on stand I just reach down by my hip pull up the hose and take a sip.
I use to carry a water bottle but it was not as accessible and made more noise and movement grab it open it and get a drink.

I'll agree that water is up there for me.

Other than that, despite many are not a fan of them, I have to admit I love my puff bottle for wind.

It's never gotten me in trouble and I really enjoy being able to keep tabs on exactly what my scent is doing.

I don't do too much to keep myself scentblocked, but I watch the wind and thermals like a hawk (although I must admit once I'm in a stand I can't do much but leave the area if wind switched.)

Great idea cause I'm always misplacing my wind detector sqeeze bottle!

I bought a good pair of binos a couple years ago but didn't start wearing them regularly till I bought the shoulder/chest strap that holds them close to the body.  Great accessory cause it allows me to use my most important accessory... The binos.  I don't know how I got along without then before.

I actually have several that I do not go into the woods without. First Compass, butane lighter, tp, knife and cordage. That gives me fire, shelter. I also use the lighter to check wind. Way out. Its the lightest survival pack I have been able to come up with. Besides those a good folding saw and space blanket are handy.

God bless, Steve

If the hunting is slow, a camera can provide great entertainment. I see too many hero pics of a dead critter in the back of a pickup which is not fair to the critter. Since I am solo 99% of the time I am hunting, I bring along a small tripod on the off chance that I kill something and want to get a pic on the scene. I enjoy watching all wildlife, and from time to time I get a decent picture.
Binocs are a close second. I try not to go to the woods without either.

Thanks for sharing with us.

There are quite a few items listed that are also on my list but my number "!" has to be my Teresa Asbel "Hunter Image haversack".

I am so grateful for this user friendly product. It's quiet and has enough pockets in it that almost everything else on my accessory list fits inside.

I can access it without having to look at it and it's easy to determine which pocket I'm waiting an item out of.

Everything includes T.P., wind indicator,Knife,a couple of grunt tubes, bleat can,a "rack pack" garden shears, cell phone.

I don't think I've listed everything that's in there but these are the things I can remember off the top of my head this morning.

Thanks again for sharing your accessory list with us.

God bless,Mudd

PS: My thermacell attaches to my quiver which attaches to my Waldrop Pac seat.

My arm guard, it has a knife in it... Last year I shot a big gobbler and he flopped around then took off. I found myself moving faster than I remember moving in a while all in hot pursuit of the big bird. The gobbler ran under a pile of Cedar and that's when I realized I had left my bow back at the tree I was hunting. I grabbed the bird by the legs and then put my armguard knife to work. The whopping 5.5" knife did it's job.

Aside for the basics. Such as things you should have with you at all times. The things I litke to carry extra R my binos no doubt. Second would be hand warmers. It has let me hang on a few more hours. Either my body, or feet. Mostly feet. They are a real saver for me when it gets nasty. I do like carrying my glock but usually end up taking it only when I hunt spots with bears.

I think there's a difference between ACCESSORY AND NECESSITY and I think those things vary depending on where you live and hunt and how far you have to travel to hunt where you do.. For instance if my hunting spot was a walk from my house like it used to be, I'd bring a light and a knife. Both necessities. And what else would you need?  (NJ DEER)
Here in Colorado (for me) necessities are my day pack, filled with water, knife, light, batteries, extra clothes (typically rain gear), GPS. Minimum, accessories would be a face mask, and my gun.
Fun read....

I don't need a thermacell during deer season-no mosquitoes in the woods where I hunt - too high and dry.

My favorite accessory (I'm a tree stand fanatic) is a simple rubber coated screw in hook for my bow. Of course my haul line is pretty important tool

My pruners and more for snipping my way through thick green brair than anything else..except for the time when I mistook my green bowstring for a green brair vine and almost cut it into.

Same. Close second would be my Niff-t-seat.

pruning shears, compass and a small light of some description always make it into my pack or pockets, but I never leave the house without my SPOT.  Letting my caring wife know where I am and keeping her somewhat aware that I am still okay has allowed me much more time, much farther afield than years previous before I owned one.

If hunting Dorchester Co, MD for Sika #1 is a Thermacell. #2 is a good light. #3 is a compass.

For other places I'd say #1 is a good light. #2 is a good knife. #3 is a 6' hunk of 1/4" rope to make a deer drag.

My possible bag! It's a dry bag with first aid, fire starters, etc.  it goes where I do from hunting and fishing to traveling with family.

A compass and a warm vest. Because if I can find my way and stay warm, the rest is all golden.

Relax Trumpkin, its only a Randall Rtak2... Nothing to worrie about really. Just a fine campknife with a shaving sharp humble 10" blade.
