Title: Aggressive yearling
Post by: Soonerlongbow on October 21, 2014, 10:12:00 PM
While hunting I got caught not paying attention...again... and watched a group of does & yearlings. I've watched them several times this season, one of us was always just in the wrong spot.

When they came in a few days ago and I was caught unaware they eventually were spooked by a coyote. But one of the young yearlings took it upon itself (I think himself) to chase the yote away.

The next night I sat where they were crossing the 40acre hay field in the evening, only to be outsmarted again. The does, minus a yearling, came from a different direction behind me. About the same time I noticed a yearling headed to my feeder where I had been the day before. Nuts!!!

It's sunset & I originally planned to let the youngster eat. But I also can't leave the field without spooking him. I decide to make a play on it.

So across the open field I go.

Wearing my ghillie, I simply walk upright straight at him/it. Not even half way across I notice he's watching me. Nevertheless I trudge on, slowly making my way across. About 200yds into the approx. 400yd endeavor the youngster starts my way!

I stop, he stops. I walk, he walks. Eventually his curiosity gets the better of him and he starts sprinting at me! I slowly take a knee, with the sun behind me. Finally he stops 30yds out facing straight on, out of my comfort zone. We stare each other down and finally he decides to leave, leaving me once again, empty handed.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

I'm hoping tender back straps, with a side of bacon & eggs, for breakfast.

Yup, He's gonna be a FIGHTER!!!!!

Lots of guys love a big pretty rack, with long, sleek, perfect tines... Give me a busted up, basket rack Buck, anyday!!!!! This is a TROPHY!!!!!

A young basket 8 point buck is out in a field with a few does... The "Pretty Boy" Monarch of the woods, and shakes his pretty head, to impress the ladies & send this runt for cover..... The little basket buck's hair bristols, he paws the ground & charges right in!!! Gives him a headache, pokes him up good, and sends pretty boy headed for the timber with his tail between his legs!!!!!

Who's the KING of the woods...???

Great story... once again the hunt is worth the trip, even without any meat at the end of the day. Young and dumb always equals a good time, thanks for sharing.   :archer:

Ah, Mother Nature at one of her best times. Brought a grin to my face as I imagined it happening.

They say it's fight or flight, but when you mix the two you end up with courage. And yes, even the courageous fall at times.

had one at the range that would charge out of the bushes at you every time you shot the bow,, it would stop at about 20yds with its big ears facing you,,,, then you would nock another arrow and get ready to shoot and that movement would make him run back to just inside the bush line,,,, this happened about 15 times then he finally split.

You know,  something very similar  happened to me.   I was walking across a field with a Ghilli suit on after sundown and a deer came out into the field.  It ran towards me til it was less than twenty yards away.  I raised my bow and started to draw on it, but decided not to shoot, just because I was buck hunting.
