One thing I love about traditional archery hunters is, our unique way of the way we look at our sport, hobby, our way of life and the choices we make.
So after ordering my second Schafer Silvertip I was thinking about if I should name my new bow or not. Then it came to me in thinking about this that. When you buy a bow from a custom shop like Dave Widowers at Schafer. You get to name your own bow. When I shot compound bows the bow manufacturing company decides the name of the bow. It is just another thing that sets us apart and makes traditional archer just a little more unique apart from the norm.
Is it common for Traditional archers to name their bows if so let's hear some examples please.
My first Schafer Silvertip is called the Rising Sun and the new one is going to be the Setting Sun.
I haven't ordered a custom bow yet, but I already have a name when I do. "Traditional Therapy"
My Tall Tines is made from 'blond" woods so I call it Houlihan.
I have a Stewart I named "Friend", inscribed on the bow. I nickname my Elkheart "Shadow".
My Treadway longbow is "First blood"...I got my first trad kill shortly after I bought it.
When making wood bows either they suggest their own name or they get no name.
No specific names, just situational names. For example, when shooting well, I'll call it Sweetie, or Sweetheart, but when I'm shooting poorly, the names are often unprintable.
I had Dave Johnson put the name "Moon Shadow" on a cedar Hill style bow that had a white glass belly and black glass on the back. I like to name the older style bows.
After one year of not smoking and saving the money I named my new top of the line Bob Lee Nos Mo King.A women named her son that and when asked where she got the name she said it was the last thing she saw on the swinging doors before getting in the operating room to have her son delivered. So No Smoking turned into Nos Mo King for my bow. That was in 2005 have not had one since.Kip
My bow was named by my wife.
"Pain in The Butt"
At least, I think she was talking about my bow.
I had Leon Stewart build me a Slammer a few years ago and on the limb, per my request, he penned the words" The Last One".
Well........that was a couple bows ago. Oh well.
Good Shooting,
Craig

I usually let my bows name themselves after 'something' that they encountered. Once I prenamed a bow 'Tines' cause the coloration's were the many colors of tines we chase whitetails for, and I killed my biggest buck ever with the 1st kill. I got lucky.

I did prename my selfbows though. "Maiden Voyage"....

.... and "Bear Necessities".

I can never come up with very many good names. That's why I only have one kid and one dog. I could never come up with bow names...too many of em lol.
I've only got one bow that is named at the moment... It is a Black Widow SA III that was actually named by a few friends about 12 years ago... "Reaper" They said things just seem to die when I carry that bow to the woods... ;)
Well, I guess the names of my bows jsut speak to me ...
Osage Royale aging nicely so it is called "Honey".
My Mist Dawn with all Yew Limbs is called "Yew Betcha"
I will be getting my Shrew Hill back soon. It was called "Old Fox".
Bob.
I named my first custom bow, which happens to be a Caribow Peregrine, "Gotcha". It is also written on the upper limb by Abe.
My second custom bow which turned out to be a keeper, is a Whippenstick. The model is the 3-pce recurve Phoenix and that is written on the riser.
Since I suffer from MS, and have to arise from my ashes every time also, I decided this name was very appropiate.
The name for my next custom will be "Ahiga"; the Sioux word for warrior. This because I have to fight a lot to beat my MS.
That's about it :)
Mistake, delete please
Had Mike Treadway put Sweet Memories on my bow, hope when one of my grandsons uses It when I'm gone he'll remember Pop
Laser Wolf
Altair
Giovanni
Man that is some great feedback, I love the reasons why everyone names their stick and string. I remember why I named my first the rising sun. It was the beautiful day, the first day I hunted with this bow. I was in my tree stand thinking, I hope Zach my son can hunt with this bow some day. My son was only 11 years old then and growing like a weed. I knew it would only be a short while before he was old enough to pull the 55lb bow and be standing with me shooting this great bow. Now here it is Zach is 19 almost 20 and as strong as a bull. He is the rising sun. And after turning 50 this year realization sets in I'm getting older I don't feel older but the fact is I am. So my new bow will be called the setting sun. I hope Zach will pass the bows down and look back after I am gone and remember sitting together with bow in hand sharing the love of just being together. Its what we do on the outside that defines who we are, I want him to pass that on as well.
this is my bow the rising sun, look at the beautiful day it was. 58" 55lb Schafer Silvertip

Two of my bows are in honor of my old combat unit. Another one, which has lived up to its name, is "Clear Creek Deerslayer".
Sam McMichael, I can relate to that.
monkeyball, that is cool,is that truly the last bow made by the bowyar?
Terry, that a good looking self bow, life is short and I plan on making mine soon. My brother in-law has osage on his farm one just fell its pretty straight it looks like it would make a nice bow or bows its a big tree probably three staves worth. Right now Time is the problem I don't have any.
Bob B, If you put all three of your bows names togeather the misses might come aswinging.
Honey, Yew Betcha, Old Fox.
but then again if I called my wife a fox I might get a hug, or a punch if I said old fox. LOL
I made a twisty Osage that I called "The Evil Serpent" and an ACS called "Thanksgiving".
I have a custom made hill style bow from maddog named " spirit of the legend"
Bjorn, did you put pictures of that bow on tradgang it seems like I have seen a bow like that on here.
Every bow I ever owned I called "The One" until I realized it wasn't.
