It seems every year around this time I catch a cold that hangs on for weeks. It makes getting up in the morning hard, and staying quiet in the stand hard also. Do you guys have any home remedies or tricks?
Only trick I know is a product called "Cold Calm". My wife swears by it. You take it when you first feel any symptoms. Has worked for me also. She gets it at Walgreens or CVS.
If your symptoms are more advanced this stuff does not work, only down side.
Evan Williams Honey reserve...feel a sniffle coming on it will clear it up!
My dad's remedy when I was a kid was a mix of whiskey, honey and lemon juice. It sure made me feel good for awhile. I don't know what it did for my cold! :)

Hahaha Bill!!
I started taking vitamin C everyday several years ago. Have not had a bad cold since. May get a slight cold, but it doesn't last near as long, or nearly as bad as before I started taking C.

Hey Rory,
I lived in KS until I joined the Navy. A small town called Galena which is 4 miles from Joplin MO and 3 miles from the OK state line.
Bill
Well Bill I like your dad's potion the best so far!

:biglaugh: That was my dads also......that was the only alcohol he would drink. Maybe once a year.
Chris,
I didn't and maybe that is why I don't drink alcoholic beverages to this day.

Zinc, a good food based multivitamin, fresh fruit like oranges, apples, berries, vegetables raw or not overcooked, 'living' food that's not over processed does a lot to boost your immune system. Fresh garlic is excellent also eaten raw, but wives tend not to like it. LoL. Take a pot of steaming water hot as you can stand, drop a bunch of chamomile tea bags in it, throw a towel over your head and breathe the steam nice and deep for around 15 minutes.
Snuff; I'm sure it's killing me in the long run, but it seems to kill everything else, too.
Wash your hands religously and keep them away from your face.

My wife and I take vitamin C and we never have colds or flus. Also drink OJ every morning and a gin and tonic every night.
You don't really want to know ! But something that will help u a litte is to have a glass of warm water that was boiled or filtered with a whole lemon squeezed into it first thing in the morning, and yes keep the pits out.
Exactly what Jeremy recommends. I don't have any remedies to suggest

You are getting sick every year at this time and it lasts for weeks...have you thought it might be allergies and not a cold. Typically a cold last 7 days. Allergies will last until a killing frost or longer.
When my wife and I got together 37 years ago she would get a "bad cold" that would go into infected sinuses and excessive coughing. After a few years she started connecting the dots and went to an allergy doctor who confirmed her diagnosis. She is still bothered by allergies but prepared for the allergy seasons with OTC meds.
A Neti-Pot works well for flushing out your nasal cavity and sinuses.
It seems to start after I've put in a couple of serious days of hunting. Don't know if I run myself down or what. Plus the kids seem to bring something home from school every other day this time of year! Thanks for all the suggestions.
Amen on the lemon and hot water kenny. Me to it cleaned me out good this morning to Bro.I woke up with alergys and this took me to a new level and felt good. After you dring it don't discard the lemon rub it all over your face and arm it make me feel even better.
Pine needle tee.
Loaded with vitamin c and warms you up at the same time.
Plus it free and 100% natural.
This may sound either too simple or stupid to many, but when I started keeping a refillable bottle of water with me at all times and sipping it all day long, my health turned rock solid. I had a tough go the last few years with serious injuries. One of the recommendations was just this. I don't even get a headache anymore. My joints don't hurt anymore, my recovery went better than expected.
I do take a spoonful of local honey every morning though. I haven't had allergies in 10 years, except for the occasional sneeze fit, but its over just like that.
I work outside all year and come fall (late) I start making my "Garlic cocktail". It consists of boiling some water and adding it to a cup with some chicken bouillon(low sodium type). I then add some coarse black pepper and some ground turmeric, stir it up.
Now take a fresh clove of garlic and grate it right into the "cocktail" and stir it up again. Drink away. I did not have a cold all last winter and it was a nasty one to boot. Try it and see.
Good Hunting,
Craig
Work out aerobically, w/weights, and healthy diet.
Happens every year as winter starts moving in, people aren't getting enough sun on the skin. This results in a vitamin D deficiency, colds are a result. So when the weather starts turning load up on vitamin D3 and continue until summer. 5000 to 10000iu's a day is good, give it your kids as well, 35iu's per pound of body weight. I've been doing this for a very long time and don't remember the last time I was sick. Make sure the D3 formula as a little bit of K2 so you don't calcify your arteries.
Little Vitamin C helps too but I only take 500mgs a day so ya don't need much.
I take a daily supplement called super lysine immune system by quantum health. Has vita mine c echinacea licorice propolis and odorless garlic. I've taken it for about 3 years and my colds and flues have been greatly reduced. I dont get cold sores nearly as frequent now either. Works for me.
2000 mg of Emergen C for a week, then drop to 1000 mg. comes in different flavors. 30 pack to a box about $10. avail. at Wal M.. or other drugs. Caution, do not exceed 2000 mg or take that amount longer than a week. yes some patients are on high doses under doctors care. I take 1000 mg daily and it helps, because of the different vitamins. Wash and keep hands away from nose, mouth and eyes. Most cold/flu germs are contagious by air, so being within 3 ft. of someone that is ailing is a bad spot to be. Check several different websites, or ask your doc. Go hunting and stay in the woods, it is healthier. :biglaugh:
I take supplements and have for years but the biggest difference was made back the 3rd week of Jan. of this year.
I was tired of feeling sick and tired a lot of the time and I weighed 303 lbs at that time.
I started walking every day as far as I could walk and still have enough left to make it back home.
Then I started picking a spot ahead of me and telling myself I want to run at least that far then I'd do it then drop back to a walk.
After I got my breath back I'd pick another spot I wanted to run to and off I'd go.
I kept doing this every day but after a week or so I'd increase the distance I wanted to run until over time I found myself running the entire distance.
I ran this for a couple of months and decided I wanted to do a 5K. My problem was I didn't know how long a 5K was so I Google'd it.
When the answer came up on the screen I literally started laughing out loud.
A 5K as it turns out is 3.1 miles and I had been running 3.2 for the whole two months.
I have continued to run a 5K everyday now for quite a while and when I stepped on the scales this morning I weighed 235lbs.
I feel awesome!
God bless,Mudd

I am a walkaholic. Have been for several years.
Yes on washing hands a lot if you are working with other people or are out in the public. I also try to eat some kind of fresh fruit daily. Daily multiple vitamins when I remember.
For head colds, and I get some bad ones, short of going to see the Dr, I like a hot cup of Russian tea with a couple of shots of brandy in it before bedtime. A really good night of sleep does wonders for me and the Brandy helps with that. Actually sometimes I think mine are more allergy related so if I can catch it early Zertec seems to help. Some people take it daily but I prefer not to.
I also think yoga really helps me. Low impact weight training, repeatable stretching. Probably sounds wiered but the breathing exercises also helps me I think. At age 62, I can still do most things that I want to so something must be working.
Work.....
I work outside, in any & all kinds of weather. Wind,Rain,Snow,Sleet,Hail,Hurricans,Tornados..... 100 degrees to -30 degrees.
Never get sick.
As for my immune system... 6 years in the Marine Corp. I've drank Swamp water out of a combat boot, Wrung my socks out to get a drink, and eaten things, that would make a Billy Goat puke.
Works for me! Others mileage may vary.....
Same has Jason, pine needle tea!! work for me.Have some every time I am in the woods.
MAY THE SPRIT OF FRED BEAR GUIDE OUR ARROWS.
A little trick - Emergen-C
Mix with water, buy at the grocery store or drug store. First sign of a sniffle or sore throat, take it that morning and that evening. If it persists the next day, repeat.
Also take before traveling.
It's been 2 years and 4 months since I've had a minor cold and using this regimen has been the ticket.
Cheers
The best way to avoid illness is to stay away from people during hunting season. Live in the woods, up a tall tree. Germ free air up there!
I live in a farming area and never get sick until the fall or spring when the planes start spraying chemicals. They fly over my house and the smell is so strong sometimes you can't be outside. My local doctor says everyone is sick that time of year. I do get a good shot of fertilizer on my yard and garden from time to time for free, guess that is an apology for making me sick.
Eat right, limit alcohol, don't smoke, and stay on my feet for long hours.
I am pretty sure the only thing that keeps me relatively healthy is the luck of good genetics...time to bump that up a bit with healthier eating and more exercise...not getting any younger
DDave
Haven't been sick, not even a cold for over fifteen years. When teaching I was sick four or five times a year. I've never smoked, don't eat out, don't take pills, but workout daily; also eat, drink and sleep wisely are healthy keys.
Probiotics and Cod Liver Oil Daily
We drink a lot of stinging nettle/honey tea at our house. And the occasional Emergen-C pack.
Stinging nettle: (Urtica dioica) builds energy, strengthens the adrenals, and is said to restore youthful flexibility to blood vessels. A cup of nettle tea contains 500 milligrams of calcium plus generous amounts of bone-building magnesium, potassium, silicon, boron, and zinc. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, D, E, and K. (lots of info online...nettle is a super food)
To make the tea, you'll need:
ingredients:
1/4 cup dried stinging nettle leaves
1 Tbsp local Honey
1 quart water
(lemon juice to taste)
Bring the water to a boil. Pour over the leaves and let infuse for 4-10 hours or overnight. Strain into a quart sized container and store in the refrigerator. The infusion will keep for a few days. If it spoils, use it as a hair rinse or use it to water your plants.
Look into a product called Juice Plus. Any internet search will yield results. I was sceptical at first but have seen the results first hand. Now, this is not something that will show results in a couple days but it will make a difference long term.
We also drink a lot of homemade Kefir. This is probably more important to overall proper immune system function, as 80% of your immune system starts or is otherwise dependent on what is going on in your GI tract.
Wash your hands frequently.
I'm with the crowd who thinks it may be allergies. It hits me about the same time every year (bow season) and lasts until frost. Ragweed is my problem. Antihistamines are useful now, but it was not until I underwent an extensive series of allergy shots that they were of much help. If it is allergies and not a cold, the supplements won't help much. Check with the doctor, as colds are just not a regularly "scheduled item". He can run tests and be certain. Good luck with it.
I left the teaching profession in 2012 after 20 years and have not been sick since. Seems like I always had a cold of some sort from being around the kids (elementary physical education teacher). Now I work in sales. I try to not shake hands with people. Contact with others is where it all starts. Best remedy I have found is to wash your hands frequently.
