Hello Friends of the Stick Bow. this is my first post here on the site and would like to thank all of you who welcomed me. I had a great season and thought to share it with you.
I was fortunate to be able to hunt an area on the Coast of Oregon across the street from my home this year. The area holds a very large resident ELk population with some giant mature Rosevelt Bulls and the herd totaling about 45. I hunted nearly every day, morning and evening, and only once did I not see ELk for two weeks, and had at least two good stalks on every other day. For that alone I was deeply grateful, and was just about to call it a good season and put the bow away for other aspects of life when...
On the last day I was going to hunt my good friend cued me to not hunt them in the field, which turned out to be the perfect bit of help. I found the herd first thing in the morning, and knowing their habits saw that I had to take a long circuitous route to head them off with an ambush, through the woods. By the time I painstakingly got myself into position to begin calling, or watching for their next move, this spike bull walked 100 yds in a perfect bee line to my position stopped and turned broadside, and quartering away 18 yds from me. All I had to do was take two little steps in quiet wet grass on my knees, lean over and... well it was story book perfect, as the bull went 20 yards in plain sight and fell seconds later. It was 7:35 am on a cool day, and quiet as could be. The moment was holy. The herd (including the Big Bull) came over to greet me and the Spike just after he was down, and then quietly walked away. Many Thanks To Talondale for fixing my pic post mistake. I am using Imgur now, and its very simple.
Just for fun, and a test, here is a pic of the Herd Bull whom I chased all season, which I took just seconds after I shot the spike. He came over with the rest of the herd to within about 30 yds, as if to say " This ones for you". (http://i.imgur.com/dQf2f3l.jpg)
He was a very mature Roosevelt 7X6 that had pure black face and horns with Ivory tips. Awe inspiring.
He sure is a dandy!
Congrats ... fine pic and a nice tasty young elk
