does any one know how he is doing...i will tell you this..i really miss reading his articals..he is such a great writer...
The Ferret is doing very well, retired and riding his motorcycles daily. He isn't building bows anymore but continues writing for TBM on occasion. He is not on any archery boards that I know of.
I also miss his bow building and hunting tips, told a good story to!!
Me too he had a pretty cool how to website up for a while to.
He has one of his articles up at the PA website.
Mickey has a real gift in his ability to convey a thought through the written word.
I finally got to meet him at this past PBS banquet. Been a fan of his for a long time.
I butt-dialed him a couple months ago and he left a voicemail return. So at least he can still talk and use a phone :)
Is he still hunting........?? I hope!!
I remember him talkin' about a big, big buck he was seeing close to his house for a few seasons I think. One of those deals where he would see it a few times then it would disappear during the season. Wonder if he ever tagged it?
I still have a few of s the self how rulers he made and used to send out. Great guy and always willing to share his knowledge!
I was lucky enough to meet him at the Tenn. Classic a couple of years ago. He sat down and talked bows for a good while. What a great guy. I followed his How-to word for word while making my first self bow. He does show up on PA every great now and then.
After "knowing" Mickey for quite a few years here on TG and on PA I finally met his at the Tenn. Classic when Clint did. Mickey and I had swapped bows, arrows and raw materials over the years so it was areal pleasure to finally meet him in person. I just so happened to have my copy of TBBIV with me and had Mickey sign it for me. He wrote the chapter on "Arrows of the World" in that issue.
I never did get to try one of his famous Hot Dogs From Hell, though.
I see his son Brian weekly at lunch. Says Mick is doing well and so is wife Dianne.
He came up to see us at Cloverdale 2 yrs ago but he didn't make it up this yr.
I remember every year he would post BEAUTIFUL pics of Turkeys photographed in his back yard.
I also was blessed to meet him at an event in Wheeling in either 06 or 07.
I do have one of his floppy rulers!
Pat B,
The HDFH's are not to be taken lightly. I got to enjoyed them at MOJAM and there is just something about spicy hot dogs in the Missouri summer that makes it a special delicacy... ;)
I know, Paul. I guess now I'll never have the pleasure. I've wanted to go to MoJam since it first started but never made it. It is on my bucket list. Too bad HDFH won't be there.
We still manage to eat pretty well Pat. If my garden gets started early enough there are stuffed anaheim peppers wrapped in bacon at my camp. :)
This is one area of life that really makes me miss the "Old Days."
There were some really fine, fine folks with whom I've lost contact. They were great friends, but I suppose "seasons" inexorably change.
I miss you, Mickey!
Paul, I may make it next year. Kelly G may be moving to Augusta, GA and asked me to ride to MoJam with him if he does move. I will definitely have to go if he does. It will be about 15 hour drive from here.
The Hotdogs from Hell!
Mickey was one of the first ppl i met growing up shooting trad. and yeah, the old days of mojam are a distant memory. someone could write a book about what went on at that campground.
john
Yep back in the day we started the food from you area walk through on Saturday night. We used to do a MOjambala that was pretty good. LOL
Mike
The sharing of special dishes was always a treat at MoBoJam but there were several camps that made it really special not only because of the good eats they shared but the friendship they shared as well.
Mike(Wingnut), wife Connie,Rusty (trashwood) Craine, The Ferret, his lovely wife and his "other" brother and a few others whose faces I can see in my minds eye but the names aren't coming to mind always pooled their offerings to made for a great group of "Goodwill" ambassadors and some tasty morsels.
Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories Wingnut.
God bless,Mudd
Had my 1st taste of coyote, beaver tail, HDFH's and cheese curds plus so many more amazing tasting dishes....this was all made so awesome because of the folks that shared.
God bless,Mudd [/qb][/QUOTE]
PS: Sorry about the double post.
Mickey is alive and well - I had dinner with him, his wife and son last night. We share a love for Cincinnati's famous Skyline Chili. He is also an avid Cinci BenGALS fan while I am a diehard Steelers fan, so we also love trash talking each other's teams. I was bowhunting in the area and he invited me over. I asked if he had been bowhunting lately but it is still motorcycle riding season and he loves to ride. He also has been busy as a "trophy husband" and spoiling his grandson.
wish we had a 'Like' button Mike and Roy!!! I miss those days too.
DRT, Hackbow, Ferret, Dean, JD Jones, Pablo, Will Steffen....so many
wish we could do a 'class reunion' :)
I saw Will Steffen at Graf's reloading in St charles, MO about a year ago. I met him at Mojam when he did a bbo glue up talk.
He is BIG into the 45 action shooting stuff but said he still has some Osage and bamboo around. Didn't remember me but I remembered him.
the ferret is a fine gentleman who is ever so generous with his bow building knowledge and is also a genuinely great person! i crossed paths with mickey through "fate" back in 2004...one of the most spiritual moments of my life! if you search the "classics-subject-only" here in tradgang for "little one" you will read about it. i have a bow made by him named KISMET that is very dear to me. i have spent the last 9 years raising little ones of my own and have gotten away from hunting, but i told my 9 yr old just the other day that next year he, KISMET, and i were headed back to the woods.
I remember him from his pre-stickbow days and activities in the Ohio Bowhunters Association. I also recall a season where he killed 3 deer; one each with a c-bow, recurve and longbow.
