Title: High nock or crawl for 20 yard point on?
Post by: Bellasm on October 15, 2014, 07:26:00 PM
I have not shot a traditional bow in thirty years and would like to set up a bow so that my point on will be 20 yards. I am shooting a #45 longbow with an arrow that weighs over 600 grains. I have seen a video where an individual set his nock height to around 3/4-1" high in order to achieve point on impact at 20 yards. As crazy as that sounds the flight of the arrow was perfect. The other option is to use a twenty yard crawl. Of the shooters out there which method do you prefer or is there another method that I have overlooked. Thanks in advance for your opinons.

Have you tried 3 under with a high anchor? This is how I shoot and my point on is 20 yards.

The thing that concerns me with the high nock point is if your broadheads will hit the same as field points?

A longer arrow will also reduce your point on.

I agree with A.S. about 3 under and a high anchor and long arrows, I do have a nocking point at 11/16th also. String walking is very very accurate however it can be a little tricky while hunting and getting good arrow flight can be tough too sometimes, not undo able but tricky. Like said make sure your BH imact like your FP and you should be fine anyway you do it. Also, for me, shooting off the shelf vs a wire rest shortens my gaps big time... Just a thought. Good luck

Thanks guys, I will be shooting three under and have not taken into consideration longer arrows. I guess it will take some trial and error.

Why not just put a sight on the bow?

I shoot with a 25 yard fixed crawl. Very lethal in the woods.

You will need to raise your nock height slightly if you start crawling down the string.

Some of the guys that have done it will tell you to be satisfied with fletched grouping and don't torture yourself with trying to bareshaft.  I'm hard-headed and had nothing but total frustration until I went to an ILF rig and dialed in a 1/8th inch negative tiller.  Your mileage may vary, but I can get my bare shafts to fly like darts from a 3U directly below the nock to a 3/4 inch below nock crawl with no adjustment.  I was a skeptic and never thought it could be done.  You won't get perfect flight at multiple crawls though, but I only care agout hunting distances.
