Title: Self Bow
Post by: Tom L on October 14, 2014, 08:30:00 PM
I want a self bow to use for hunting, have for years but don't have the time or skills to build. Please give me the names of some good builders. I looked at Dryad they used to build them but I couldn't find them on there web site.

Thanks for the help.

Most guys make their own or give them away.  Shaun at Taurus Bows is one you might contact.  He has a website.  Great fella who guides for Mule Creek Outfitters and is a TGer.  Pacific Yew Bows (Jay St. Charles) also does some all-wood bows on a commercial basis, but they will be more costly.  Ed Scott is another but also functional art/pricey.  Shaun could certainly build a workhorse hunting bow on a more modest budget, but he also makes some real sweet ones, kinda whatever is needed.  TGer 'burnt' has also been known to build a few for TGers who want a good osage bow.  He made me one once that I stupidly sold, it was 'only' 40#, but one of the sweetest little shooting bows I ever tried.

There are many members here that build them. Try posting this in the bowyers bench. There are plenty of guys looking for an excuse to build another bow. Lol.

I think Phoenix archer just gave you great advice, but I think that if your really interested in self bows you should scrounge up a few tools like a flea market or antique store drawknife, some rasps and scrapers, get a good book like dean Torges hunting the osage bow find a stave and try yourself. If I can do it believe me most people can too. You just need to want to and be a little stubborn. You might not turn out functional art right away but with some careful work and a good instructional book I'd think most people can turn out a solid hunting bow after a few tries, might be ugly but it will shoot an arrow right thru a critter and that's what counts in my eyes. As for time, the last bow I built took me months to finish cause I was only able to work on it 15 min at a time but I got it done and killed a doe with it this year and I wouldn't trade that bow now for the most expensive, custom pacific yew selfbow the greatest bowyer in the land could build. They mean more when you invest yourself into em!  Good luck!

I just got a beautiful Osage with copperhead skins from Jim Remmp At Hamstrung Archery. An awesome bow at a great price.

I would give Ryan Gill a nod as well, lots of bang for your buck.

Just out of curiosity, what is your favored poundage and draw length, split or three under?

I would like a Osage flat bow, 45 - 47@27, 64" to 66" long. I shoot left handed and 3 under.
