Got the fearsome threesome here, Charlie, Curt, and Tracy (listed alphabetically), been here 2 days and have 2 critters down.
I'm just sayin... :bigsmyl:
They will have to tell their own versions of it... :D
This will get real good.
They are seein plenty of critters, including a P&Y woodchuck and a P&Y snapping turtle from the same stand!!
All I'm gonna tell is the critter count on the pole, they are responsible for details... ;)
It'll be good when the stories told! You should have taken corn to the neighbors ;)
And from what I saw, that turtle is pushing booner status hahaha
Yep, that was a dandy turtle and woodchuck last night I got picks of them. Ruined another arrow this morning on something bigger :bigsmyl:

This darn rain is slowing us down sure wish it would move on by.
Oh yeah.
I can't wait to hear these tales!! :campfire: :coffee:
Jake
Been waiting patiently for this week to unfold.
:campfire:
Not there....but suppose to be....
Rooting for you guys.....
:campfire:
Were all wishing you were here Terry.
Curt's sweet talking some turkeys right now up by the gap stand hoping for a shot. I've got a buck across the field working the edge and were both trying to get some hunting in before this rain sets in for the day.
Tracy
I'm with you guys in spirit.......... but not being clairvoyant I'll need stories and pictures.(which I am sure will come)
:campfire:
God bless,Mudd :archer:
This will be a fun thread for sure!! :campfire:
Steve
Good luck, guys!
Bisch

Terry jump in the truck and go. there's still time. Better get there before these guys kill all the deer lol.
Can't do it...got two daughters in a play this weekend starts on Thursday...and we are suppose to get HAMMERED late tonight with BAD weather...maybe its best that I did miss all the way around.
Really bad squall line coming...got to unplug several computers to save data just in case.
Bummer Terry. I admire you sticking around home to be a father.
(personally, I think ole Lucky has you traumatized :smileystooges:  )
Hopefully Next year Charlie will have Killed Lucky and you can make it back to Kenny's. I'm sure its not the same without you.
T is the man , family first! Stay safe bud!
Been raining here all day may quit sometime tomorrow with a bit of luck. The guys tried this morning for a bit til the rain got too heavy.
I haven't seen ol lucky, not sure where he went to. Unless he figured his luck was all used up and left the country.... :D
Here's that P/Y turtle that was watching my tree stand for me.
He was sitting in the sun and did for about a hour before he slid off into the pond.

Woodchuck directly under me right after.

Spent a great afternoon in Kenny's shop skinning animals talking bows and some shooting. Here's Guru testing one of Kenny's bows.

Tracy
Man Tracy, you guys have seen some critters! I love that part of hunting. Watching all God's creatures. What a turtle!!
Is Curt shootin that sweet 64" 50#er Kenny made late last year? Looks like ole Kenny finally got all that lam dust out of his shop.
Glad you guys are seeing lots of deer. Congrats Tracy!!!
Oh no, Curt's Gone Righty.
Kenny, Is that another bow in the works on the table?
Looks like a fun time lads!
Keep the stories coming boys !!! :campfire:
Bill
Still raining and nasty but should be moving out later today
Cell service is terrible but I'm posting a few picks from my phone. I will download the rest from my good camera when I get home but try to keep a few going for ya. Just did a drive around a several deer were out, Curt and I are going to go move a stand do some scouting in a new spot Terry recommended.
Tracy
I thought you were a wrong handed guy Curt?
Curt Text me...I know where he is...told him about a place near 60 yards from where he's sitting in a stand now, and he's seen a big buck run into the area I told him about.....lets pull for him that the buck circles back out of that area and back into the beans and crossed right in front of him.
That is a possibility if the buck comes out the other side, he very well may come back through narrow gap in beans right in front of Curt. He's in the game this evening as he had another smaller buck at 10 yards and he was with a doe. There's some pin oaks behind Curt and if the buck comes out on the left it will very likely graze on the beans through that gap to get to the pin oaks.

Good luck Curt! I have a strong Idea of where he is also Based on Terry's description.
Tracy, If it starts raining really hard, you can hunt out of the cab of the old Tractor ;) ;)
Sounded like quite a day from texts I got!! Goin over to visit and see if they need help with anything in a bit.....
Windy as heck today but deer must be movin well!!
The old tractor is a perfect set up....had several cross there to enter the neighboring property. I couldn't get the tractor lights to turn on and it was too dark to shoot ! :)
I saw the same in texts as well. Great day :)
Yep, 20 total deer, 5 bucks, 2 of em good bucks!!
A couple turkeys, heard yotes, wind blew like heck!!
I was at work today, but Curt is hitting a new area in AM, if he kills the buck I hope he sees, I'm takin off work to see it! :bigsmyl:
Sorry if I gave away too much info on Curt's hunt. .....don't want to steal anyone's story. .....but it made me feel good and like I was part of the hunt. .....since I couldn't make it. Please forgive me.
:campfire:
Yeah Kenny. ....i talked to him about that area too....hope he hunts late in AM.......and hunts it an evening as well as evenings seem to have been better in there but don't want to detract him from hunting where he did tonight another evening as well.....he needs to go with HIS GUT on that as he's was in a great area this afternoon. ....and it could replay again another afternoon.
Walked into a new stand in the dark this morning, never hunted or been around this stand. Came around the corner and seen a nice reflective tack showing were the stand was which is nice no fumbling around in the dark looking for it. Walked up crossed the little creek looked up and suddenly had six glowing tacks and two were lower to the ground. Oops! About that time they let me know I was intruding on there space and ran off telling ever animal they could blowing the whole way. :bigsmyl: When it got daylight I had a bunch of turkeys roosted all around me and later almost got a shot at one on fly down. Passed on a button buck only looking for a doe now that the buck tags filled and found some good sign in this spot. Not bad since the rain stopped yesterday afternoon!

:bigsmyl:
Such a cool thread!! Can't wait for all the details.
Jake
Guys are seein plenty of critters, its gonna happen! (again) :bigsmyl:
Waiting for updates! Keep on 'em boys!
Yesterday before our evening hunt we did some shooting and Curt had been talking about how he had never shot a Hill style bow that hadn't rattle him some. I got out one of my all natural BBO bows and let him try it.
Even though Curt is a lefty I think the man could out shoot most of us right handed guys too. I'll let him tell about the bow but let's just say he wouldn't give it back to me for a while.
Tracy
Pretty good form for a lefty...better than mine :)
I need a bow building lesson and an excuse to come visit bud. I can't wait to hear all the details of this hunt :campfire:
Down wind tonight from two very stinky scrapes, smell like feed lots :help:

Tracy, thanks for the pics and the mini updates. Your brief reports are a lead in to what's to come. Can't wait for the full story.

Been waiting for this thread and now playing catch up.Sorry that you could not make it again this year Terry. But cool you are staying withyour daughters. Charlie is with another new crowd, Had a blast there last year. Sounds like Kenny has grown a good crop of critters this year. Good luck guys and keep the post coming.
Yeah....it was best I stayed all the way around...issues with an employee last two days also.
Looking forward to the wind up...man I hope they down some more.
The guys have headed home..... Tales will be forthcoming in a day or 2.
Terry , sorry you had to miss it but I've already told ya what I thought about that!
Charlie, Curt , and Tracy- You guys are awesome!
Can't wait to hear their tales!!!
Can't wait till get there myself!!!
Counting down the days till the Arkansas boys get there . :jumper: :jumper:
Darrell , I have info that may help plus the harvest is gonna start like crazy now, no rain in sight!
:campfire: :coffee:
I have sharpened my broadheads. Have already packed most my supplies, including cutting boards and wrapping paper.
This week will just drag along!!! :archer2: :archer2:
Thanks for following along this week everybody, I had a great time as always at Kenny's. It sure was good to see some of my old friends again and get to hunt with them I just wish Terry could have made it and completed our team but we know family and a business comes first. This was my first hunt and test since some major health problems and I was glad that everything went just fine for me.
I will make mine short and let the story tellers Curt and Charlie tell there's like there supposed to be done :readit: We sure hit some crummy (Rain) weather for the first 4 days but that's the way it goes' but we hung in there and did the best we could.
My first morning sit was in one of Kenny's ladder stands on the new 40acre's and it didn't take long and I had two does come by at 35yds browsing. Twenty minutes later 3 more a big doe and twins but they feed around a couple oaks for 30 minutes, had shots at the young ones but never the big doe. After getting out I did a little scouting to warm up and check out the area and everything looked very good except you guys coming up on the next hunt might want to avoid this corner of the CRP field.
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac248/TmPotter47/mo1_zps1ca5dc18.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/TmPotter47/media/mo1_zps1ca5dc18.jpg.html)
Them buggers could be trouble but Kenny will show you were there at. That night is when I sit in the stand were Charlie had his fall last year, so glad he's able to still be able to hunt with us this year. That's were the snapping turtle and woodchuck paid me a visit and right at dark I had four deer come in but to dark to shoot.
That night Kenny came over and while we were talking about a place we had seen he told us that there was a field of soybeans in all those weeds I just hadn't noticed. Plans were made and I would take my little strap on stand a couple steps and head in there a have a look see. :)
In the dark the next morning I didn't have to go far the sign was really good and fresh since the rains had stopped briefly.
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac248/TmPotter47/null_zps40ff8ea6.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/TmPotter47/media/null_zps40ff8ea6.jpg.html)
I found a great spot were three trails intersected and I climbed up on a brush pile set my stand on a tree maybe six feet off the ground, brushed it in a little and climbed in just as the sky was turning blue. I forgot to take a pick of that stand but I know Curt took one because he was shocked I shot a deer out of it I think. :D
Tracy
Here we go, time for the stories!
Tracy, what the heck is that in the bottom corner of the bottom pic?
Looks like the hornets have a built in cedar closet too, never noticed that before!
:campfire: :coffee:
lol! Kenny pretty sure that's my big fat finger with a shooting glove on it :dunno: :D
As soon as it got daylight I could see 3 deer out in the field about 150yds, 10 minutes later another out from behind a large brush pile and it was a young buck. He headed across the field away from me and started working the field edge checking scrapes we later found out and browsing. I started checking the timber out behind me and could see several good size rubs on ceder trees running all the way up the hill.
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac248/TmPotter47/mo6_zps083e6e2f.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/TmPotter47/media/mo6_zps083e6e2f.jpg.html)
I was still watching the buck across the field and happened to glance to my left and there stood a buck about 60yds away. He started to go away then stopped and turned around and headed right on the trail that would bring him right by me at 12yds. He covered the ground quickly and stopped perfectly in front of me leg forward and sniffed the ground not knowing what was about to happen.
The shot looked great I instantly saw blood shooting out he dropped and lunged sideways 10yds and about fell over the headed down the bean field and over a little rise and out of sight 80yds away. All was quiet and the deer in the field and the little buck never heard a thing and were still feeding. I text the guys and no sooner did and here come the rain and not a light rain either, I waited 10 minutes broke one of my rules got out knowing it was a good shot looked for my arrow and found it. Followed a short blood trail and at the end was fine young meat buck for the cooler.

When I go out of state I'm a meat hunter and thankful for the good clean kill and time spent in the woods. I can always hunt the big bucks at home!
Tracy
Great Shot Tracy. Looks like a very healthy Deer!
Congratulations  :clapper:
Great job Tracy! So glad to see you out doing what you do. Congrats!
Congrats again my friend!
Nice buck K.S. Trapper!! healthy looks guys congrats
Nice! I've enjoyed your pictures and story! Lots of meat on that buck. Congratulations and good luck with your bucks back home!
Bernie
Nice shooting Tracy.
Nice shootin!! Some dang fine eatin right there!!!
Steve
Tracy, thanks for the heads up on those hornets. Man that is a big nest of them. Great shot on the buck. Thanks for the stories. Glad you had a good hunt.
Kenny, do you and Darrell want me to bring you my bee suit to get rid of those hornets?
I may want to hunt there.
Congrats on a very nice buck. I think I saw him last year wearing buttons.
My hunting bud is a hard act to follow in a lot of ways. He always makes me feel like I'm a slacker when I hunt with him.
This hunt I got a double whammy what with Curt Cabrera in camp.
I'd arrived a few hours ahead of the guys but Kenny was waiting for me and we rendezvoused at the cabin.
It's a sweet set up and I appreciate it more each year as my old body creaks, groans and just plain hurts from years of physically abusing it, which I prefer to call living.
I settled into my usual room with a lot of help from my buddy Kenny. A finer host you'll never find. Soon the guys rolled in and we gathered around the kitchen table for a quick council of war. Then Kenny loaded them up for a quick refresher for Tracy and Curt's first look at the properties.
I already had a game plan. Given the pain in my knees which even pain meds barely touched I planned to rely on the advice of our gracious host and his considerable knowledge of both the properties and deer hunting in general.
At this point I have to post a disclaimer. Although I took many pictures during the hunt I discovered toward the end of our stay that ALL of my photos had been deleted from my camera. To say I was disappointed is certainly understatement.
I'll describe my hunt to the best of my ability but will leave the bulk of the telling to my able companions.
Charlie did you ever try that SD card in another camera or your computer? It takes a lot to erase a card several steps before it's erased check it to make sure. I forgot I was going to check it with my camera before we left but got to busy packing sorry buddy.
My setup was my Mohawk bow at #54, surewood arrows tipped with 200gr Ace broadheads. After I found the buck I went and climbed back In the treestand hoping for a doe but it started raining again and didn't hardly stop for the next three days. I went and picked up Curt and the game cart and we took some picks. He's got better ones on his camera
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac248/TmPotter47/null_zpsbd5b6cbb.jpg)
And hauled him out, well Curt hauled him out and broke in Kenny's new gambrel back at the cabin. I skipped that night hunt and cut up my deer and got him on ice, the guys had some action in the rain no less but they can tell you about it.
Man did it rain for the next two days so we spent a lot of time in the cabin and visiting with Kenny in his shop. Thanks for looking!
Tracy
Congrats! Nice buck!
K.S.-great shot on a nice buck! Congrats!
Kenny  :clapper:
Tracy,
Nice job. Looks like you had some fun!
CK

Tracy
Awesome, congrats!!!!! :archer:
I have seen those oaks before. truly beautiful trees If they could tell stories? Great shot on your buck
Too cool! I can't wait to hear more!
I tried all that stuff Tracy. All that came up was a couple of videos that I apparently didn't think was working. Video of the ground under my stand, the sky and some out of focus limbs is all I had.
I was ready for that first morning in the stand. More than ready really. I'd been waiting for 5 years to see this farm planted in corn and now I'd gotten my wish.
The only problem with it all was that I'd hoped that the corn would come out just before or even during our hunt. The wet weather kept that from happening.
I was confidant anyway. After all, I'd killed several deer on this farm. All had been very close to the stand I headed for that foggy Saturday morning.
There had been modifications to the farm by way of bulldozer work and the gap between corn fields hadn't been there in hunts past. But it seemed perfect in it's placement. kenney liked it enough to have placed a ladder stand right in the middle of the gap and along the predominantly downwind side.
As the sun shone it's muted light on the the woods and fields that morning I was quick to see the myriad hoof prints in the soft earth passing my ambush.
Heck, I'd walked the edge of the corn in and would later find that it was the main path to my stand for what seemed to be every deer on the place.
It was probably too late, but I would change my approach to my stand to avoid walking where the deer did.
I'd move down a corn row a few rows in from the field edge that showed no tracks. I had a wind advantage that way as well and by using the red lens on my head lamp I felt like I was being quite sneaky.
Be that as it may, I saw only 3 does that first morning and only two more after that. In total i hunted the stand 3 times before finding greener pastures.
Congrats Tracy! Sure is good to see you able to do stuff like this. Looking forward to more tales from this hunt!
My buddy Tracy is one generous guy. He suggested I move to the location where he killed his buck. It was too good to pass up. Not only was the sign every bit as good as he'd said, bit it was also easy to get to and not be too hard on my old knees.
Curt Cabrera and I snatched up an extra ladder stand that Kenny had laying around and headed in there at midday.
Being as close to the heavily used trail as it was I opted to leave off a section of ladder to gain an angle advantage on any deer coming into the kill zone. The low hanging limbs of nearby pin oaks provided perfect cover. I could remain unseen until any deer coming up or down the trail was in range.
Once the stand was in place Curt and I headed back to the cabin for a little target practice and lunch. I'd sit the stand that afternoon.
Here's the view from that new ladder stand for Charlie since he lost his picks.

Good stuff guys.....I sure missed seeing yall!!!
Charlie, about you pics...try another card reader if you can. I've had 'card error' before and it scared me to death cause I had over 1000 pics of a play on it....my card reader was old and couldn't handle the data.....as may your camera if they are on the 'play back' mode.
Don't give up on em just yet.
Great stuff. The amount of tracks in the mud is crazy especially considering the rain so I am assuming these must be all "fresh".

Same happened to me this year, there is a glimmer of hope.
Awesome story so far guys and many congrats to you Tracy. I sure hope I get to meet you one day.
That should read...'aren't on your play back mode on your camera.
Oh....and CONGRATS Tracy...glad you made it back, and in good health.
Thanks Terry! :)

Yep all fresh tracks over night! I see why Kenny calls this spot I45 high way :bigsmyl:

Thanks Randy and I sure hope the same, I'm sure there's a hunt in our future sometime. ;)
Tracy
Congrats to all. Great story's. Can't wait to hear more. Looks like much fun.
I'm enjoying this thread immensely. I sure hope t get back to Kenny's lease one day. Its a special place.
I learned stuff about hunting each time I talked to these guys!
Awesome thread. Way to go fellas.
Jake
Awesome job Tracy!!!
Todd
Charlie you can try cleaning the copper contacts(alcohol) on the sd card as that can prevent the reader from reading if they are dirty.
Congrats  Tracy
Thanks for taking us along.
Really enjoying this thread.
Thanks!
This is a great thread, thank you
OK , the Arkansas assassins arrive Friday.
David and Darrell , both have taken deer here and this family has been here for 4 years straight I think.
Was hoping again for the corn to be gone, but its still standing.
Charlie, I'm not sure what the lock slide button does on the SD cards, but think that might be it?
Hope you get your pics back buddy!
Good luck to David and Darrell. I think it might be a little bit warmer than the last time they were there! Looking forward to the rest of the story from Tracy, Charlie and Curt.
:goldtooth:
I bet it'll be warmer than last time you guys were here, Mike!! :D
Yup, Steve and I in October

Just a little bit of a temperature swing, looking forward to the last week in November.
I'm pretty much done guys, I was hoping the other two would have jumped in here by now. I spent the rest of the week chasing does but watching them pass to far away for my shooting. I had some shots at yearling does and button bucks but chose to pass on them.
I heard coyotes every single night sometimes right on top of me but I never seen or had a chance at one and oh how I love to skin coyotes!!! :D
Turkeys were much better then when I was there in 2011, I pretty much seen and heard them at almost every sit. I should have taken the time to set up one of my blinds and my AvianX decoys because when I got out my calls they sure liked to talk back to me.
Tracy
KS Trapper,
How has hunting low been for you?
I also hunt from low stands. Not quite that low but around the 10-13 ft range. As long as i get in a group of trees or tangle. I been doing good.
Mike.....if we fall somewhere between -20 and 80 degrees I'll be happy :) As long as we have enough ham, pop, and chocolate we can survive anything Kenny throws at us:) Looking forward to it ,
I really have been hunting that way for a long time, probably 25yrs. I took my biggest buck at 10ft of the ground and a 8yd shot and that was a 190inch booner so it works for me. Charlie Lamb and I were just talking about this while we were at Kenny's.
I don't mind the ladder stands and have been using them the most for years but have no problems leaving the bottom section off too. I like making my own blinds but I like a little elevation, the other thing is since having my health issues and three brain surgeries I promised my wife I would stay a little closer to the ground until the dizzy spells settle down.
I'm liking it though and look forward to the rest of the season I've got some big old bucks I'm chasing and trying to out smart. :archer2:
Tracy
The first time I sat the new stand the wind out of the northwest and running ahead of a pretty formidable storm.
While the winds blew a gale the tree my stand was in was relatively stationary... relatively! The limbs of the closest tree that I coveted for there cover beat against my legs and occasionally catching behind the legs of the ladder.
I had to keep looking over my shoulder toward a green field on an adjoining farm. A heavy trail ran from it and snaked toward my position. Visibility straight ahead was somewhat limited by the very branches that gave me such good cover, but I'd be able to see a deer coming along the edge of the timber if I stayed on my toes.
Somewhere between watching one direction and then the other a slight movement behind the screen of limbs riveted my attention close. Real close.
There through a small hole in the leafy branches I could see an eye attached to a gray muzzle. It seemed to be looking my way so I froze. Though I didn't see how this deer could have seen me I took no chances and held still as a statue.
The small doe had come out of the little trail that was right beside the tree where Tracy had placed his stand. She stood stock still for quite a while trying to decypher what information she could from the howling wind. It seemed to defeat both her sense of smell (I was downwind anyway), her hearing and to some degree her sight.
Finally she stepped from behind the covering branches and moved deliberately toward the trail a mere 10 yards in front of me.
I hope she keeps coming ! :campfire:
At this point I need to preface the following events with a slight disclaimer.
I've been shooting Hill style longbows for the last few years and enjoying it big time. During that time I had begun using the rubber band/toothpick method of holding my arrow on the bow. It had worked like a champ.
So now I was shooting a Bear Magnesium handle take down that I'd refinished and modified slightly. Instead of attaching a QuickLoc arrow holder or one of the old StaJac holders that I still have a couple of I went with the rubber band method.
This brings us back to the aforementioned deer. Since I suspected the deer might be aware of me I came to my feet with the speed of a glacier in January.
That put the doe at somewhere between 15 and 20 yards and still walking. As I drew the Bear to anchor I let out a barely audible "Maaaaaa". The deer stopped as planned, I settled on a spot low and tight to her shoulder and slipped off the string like a raindrop falling from a leaf.
I knew that arrow would find her vitals. Not a doubt in my rabid little brain. So it was no little surprise when the arrow bobbed up and down while wagging side to side at the same time. Flying like a ruptured duck didn't enhance the arrows trajectory and I watched it nose dive into the wet soil at the doe's feet.
I was exasperated and more than a little confused. The wind was still blowing but the shot had come in between gusts and since I was shooting almost directly into the wind it was hard to believe that had robbed the energy of my carbon arrow.
I left that arrow sticking there in the beans as the sun finally set on my little fiasco. I'd pick it up the next morning. It was punishment for the arrow missing such an easy shot... yes, I'm prone to take out my frustrations on inanimate objects.
The next morning I slipped back into the ladder stand in the dark. I put another rubber band/toothpick on the arrow and hung the bow on it's hanger.
As the light came on I started searching the ground beneath my stand. The rubber band should be laying right beneath me. That's the way they work. You draw the arrow back, the friction of the arrow causes the rubber band to slip off the toothpick and the whole works drops to the ground.
I couldn't see it immediately and finally used my binoculars to look at every leaf and twig below me. Nothing! Finally I widened the search area and spotted the errant arrow holder laying 5 or 6 feet out in front of the stand in the direction of last nights deer. Hmmmmmm??
Suddenly it was like the a light went on and I realized just what had happened. During the shot the damp shaft had pulled through the rubber band without it releasing from the toothpick.
When the arrow was released it shot through the rubber band carrying it along for a few feet.
At the end of my vigil I walked out in the field to retrieve my arrow. As I knocked the mud off the VPA on the toe of my boot I thought that maybe it was me that should have spent the night laying in the mud.

Sorry fellas.....been trying to get things at home caught up with the family....finally got some time today to get some thoughts and pix together...lets get going...
To say I was looking forward to this hunt would be a major, major understatement! But that also came with some mixed feelings....I was so looking forward to sharing camp with my buds....but my best bud Cade wouldn't be going with me....school first!
Being a high honors student, and a member of the varsity golf team(he's a freshman), and playing fall baseball had him very busy...
So anyway, the morning of October 10th, with tears running down my face I said my goodbye's to my family and I hit the road to the airport about 4:30 am...
After about 3 hr's of flying I was in Kansas City, and had my bud KSTrapper waiting on me!
Looking at him you'd never have a clue what he'd been through since the last time we'd hunted together...he's one tough SOB!
But at the same time without a doubt one of the best people I've ever had the chance to know! He's one of the few guys I've met that I really, really wish we didn't live so far apart...because we'd be doing about everything outdoors together...
...any way....
We rode along, caught up on some things, stopped to buy our licenses, filled up the gas tank ans soon enough we turned onto the dirt road that would lead us past Kenny's house and to camp.
Just over the next hill...
Charlie and Kenny were waiting for us when we pulled up.
It had been a few years since I'd seen and hunted with Charlie, the man I always refer to as "The living legend".
Since I met Charlie he's always been one of those larger than life hunters that I always feel "small" when I'm around them. Not sure why either, because he always treats me like I'm something special, but that's just Charlie....he makes everyone feel that way....just the kind of guy he is...
Then the next handshake was a long time coming...
I feel like I've know Kenny for years thru Trad Gang. Threads, private messages, e mails, etc....
We shook hands, and I gave him a big bear hug like an old friend...I already knew this, but over the next few days it became very apparent....I'd just "met" another one of the good guys...
Ok enough of that.... lets go hunting!!!
The first morning I would sit in one of the ladderstands that Kenny had set pre-season.
It was on the north farm, in convergence of several fingers of timber that separate the cornfields...Tracy dropped me off and I made my way down the edge of the cornfield that Kenny suggested. As I got close to where the stand was supposed to be, I heard Charlie putting his was in to his chosen stand(I45)on his 4 wheeler.
I found the stand, and climbed up....beautiful cool morning, light wind...
A couple hours later I hadn't seen a thing....so I texted Charlie to let him know I would work my way to him around 10:00. I climbed down....
The stand...
On my way to Charlie I saw a few of these...

Soon I came upon the big guy...

Charlie, I tried your tooth pick device this year but I cant figure out how to make it come off when drawing the bow, The arrow just slides through.
Good stuff guys, keep it coming.

Curt I feel the exact same. Tracy and I have had a few laughs about the "trouble" we'd cause each other if we lived closer. I have no doubt if it was the three of us, it'd really be something :bigsmyl:
A tougher man I've never known for sure! Great story :)
Keep the stories coming. Brings back great memeories on hunting with Charlie last year.Kenny has a top notch operation there.

Hey!! The Big Guy looks to be asleep in that first pic!! :D

I noticed that too! he was probably just praying. :biglaugh:
He might be Kenny, I got in pretty tight on him before he knew I was there... But I can be pretty stealthy ;)
A lot to go fellas...I probably have about 50 more pix to share.
I sleep best in a tree myself... :bigsmyl:
The "Arkansas Assassins" are about to head out from Arkansas. Super excited!!!!
Kenny I sure hope those deer get brave and come back to your zip
I got 2 dozens arrows for em this year. :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
2:06 AM ?? Man, you will almost make the mornin hunt!! Bring it on! :goldtooth:
Asleep? Nah! I was...er...meditating. Yeah, that the ticket. Meditating.
I have to admit that even though I thought I was pretty slick up there, I didn't have a clue that Curt was around until he was almost right under me. In my own defense I have to say that I wasn't expecting deer to show up in that direction so I pretty well ignored it... but Curt is pretty stealthy.
:saywhat:
And good luck to the Arkansas crew.
Thanks Charlie.
Yup 2:06AM we might end up doing a little tree stand sleeping ourselves.
Good luck guys looking forward to the updates and story's! :campfire: :coffee:

Thanks Randy and I sure hope the same, I'm sure there's a hunt in our future sometime. ;)
Tracy [/b]
Let's make it so!!
Well we pulled in aroun 10:30.after a visit with Kenny we took a little drive and made a plan. As it goes sometime, things dont go as planned. Set two stands for any north wind and now the wind has changed. So we decided to hunt couple stands Kenny already had up.
Darrell hunted the gap stand and I decided to do some stalkingon the north farm. I went to far east side and settled on a spot on the south side. I found a blown over tree and sat with my feet and legs in the hole left by the root wad. Perfect.
At six oclock I saw deer hair coming straight at me. Then I saw antlers. A nice 8 ptr. He was as wide as his ears and pretty tall. First day and first set. Im on the ground and things are happening quickly. He stayed at 40 yards or so for about 20 minutes eating acorns. Then he closed the gap quick.
I had been rattling and grunting some. It was like he knew something wasnt right. He came to 18 yards and was going to be in a great spot in about two more steps. He stopped and turned. He froze looking straight at me. He snortrd once reallylreallyloud. My heart was really pounding by this time. I calmed myself cause he was still there and I am frozen. He put his head down and saundered away.
I had no shot but if I had I would have given him a try. Gonna put a stand there tomorrow and see if he will come back. All Darrell saw were some turkey but no shot.
Keep the stories coming. I will be there in January and looking forward to meeting Kenny. Chad
The guys have been dealing with near 80 temps, but sposed to be 37 in the morning. Think things will heat back up then. I may be forced to be sick later this week. LOL
Lookin forward to meetin you too Chad !!
Oops, 48 in am, 37 wed.
Hope the cool weather gets them fired up for the guys!
Tracy
Ok fellas....I have all these pix, and no time to write much about my hunt...so I'll go through this quick as possible so these other fellas can have the spotlight...
Our host...
The fist afternoon I hunted the "Gap stand"...to the east...
To the west...
This evening was awesome...I saw 3 bucks, 2 older bucks and this fella that you'll get a better look at soon...
Since the evening before was good, I decided to try the stand again. First light I see a pretty 2 1/2" year old 8pt out in the yellow foxtail to the east. A couple grunts and he was headed my way. He was very hesitant to come thru the "gap". he hung up at about 15yds.....after a bit he decided he'd had enough and turned to leave....as he did, I voice grunted to stop him.... he stopped, but in doing so turned back quartering to me...stand off!
A few minutes later he quickly turned and started walking away at a brisk pace....he got out to about 20yds, quartering hard away, I stopped him again...he tensed, I shot, he ducked!!!
Swing and a miss!!!
Then I get a text from Tracy that he'd shot a buck!!! Awesome!!!
A bit later, I see a coyote out in the CRP, then another...I squeek to them as the both go out of sight....a minute later I see one coming...I pop on the video camera....as he comes in I see him lunge at something in the grass...comes a little closer...and lunges again at something(all on video) then turns and starts to walk straight away...a coyote walking straight away doesn't leave much of a target....but I tried as it walked off and shot just left of it's chest....strike 2!!!
The Gap Stand...
Shortly after that, I headed for Tracy...
He shot the same buck, pictured above, that I saw the evening before! I knew it was the same buck as soon as he texted the pic. It's a very unique 4 pt.
My bud!!
Before we moved Tracy's buck, we went for a walk to scout a bit....Persimmons...
A buck rubbed this sapling, broke it over a bit, then worked on a second spot further up...
We found a great spot for a stand, vowed to return with one to put up soon....
That evening I walked to a new spot in a hedgerow on the north edge of the field of yellow foxtail to the NE of the Gap Stand....I walked in with the stand, set it, and climbed up. It was warm, drizzling, and was getting tore up by skeeters!!!!
It was early yet, I was just sitting relaxing as much as I could with the skeeters beating me up....a coyote is walking by my left side at 4yds!!!!
I'm only about 9ft up and it's close...I'm caught flat footed!!!!
He walks on behind a tree, I stand.....he gets into my shooting lane at about 5-6yds....I figure just go for it before he leaves...I reach for my bow and as I'm bringing it around I make a slight squeak to try to stop him before he gets out of my lane...the yote stops and I drill it at 6yds...
Nothing shows the rest of the evening and the light rain continues as darkness closes in.
At dark I get down to look for my prize...
The fletch was drenched in blood...
about 50yds down the hellish hedgerow, I found her...

My Kwyk Styk "Cy", and 250gr. 1 1/4" 3 blade VPA...
I miss our nightly visits from Kenny, what a guy and what a great host  :goldtooth:
Tracy
Thanks Tracy! Now I'm blushin...
I might add that the gap stand is sorta set for a rightie, so Curt had a bit of a disadvantage being left handed....
VPA's are wicked!!
The next day it was pouring....but perfect to set a stand.....so, I donned my Kuiu raingear....and rode the 4 wheeler to the south farm with ladderstand attached and went to work.
It took a bit, but I got it all set in a great spot the we would call "the Guru Gap"...
My return...It had poured, but I was dry as a bone...
The big guy...
We spent the rest of the afternoon at Kenny's....he's got an awesome shop!!!
As a taxidermist, it's not often I get someone that skins for me....but Tracy wanted to show me how well he skins coyotes.....he's done way more than I have...
Oh yeah, Darrell had a good evening hunt tonite, he will tell ya when he can....

to be continued....
Ol Curt put the hurt on that old girl, nice shot buddy!!!
My text said "Redemption" :bigsmyl:
Tracy
Thanx guys....no excuses really....the buck ducked, and I just shot a bit left on the first coyote....but i did get my coyote redemption!
In...
Out...
I got the pleasure of meeting Kenny's brother John...
The next morning we couldn't even hunt because it was raining so hard...
But it would soon let up, and since Charlie had to leave for the afternoon to take care of some personal stuff. Tracy and I headed out to check a spot Kenny had told me about. We headed out on the 4 wheeler....since it was raining....we didn't take a bow with us.....hmmmm....
.

.
we hadn't gone half way in on the south farm and Tracy says..."stop, stop"!!!!
There about 200yds away was a buck tearing up a tree!!!
Windy and everything moving about, in the right direction, everything was wet and quiet, I had a perfect approach......but no bow!!!!!!
Pretty sure this is the same tight 8pt that I grunted in the second morning...
To add insult to injury....as we moved on a second, unseen much bigger buck took off as well!!!!!
We scouted and set a stand...
Then it was off to lunch....

Great Pictures Curt. brings back fnd memories. Great shot on your coyote.
Glad you fellas had a great trip. Nice pics Curt. Sure looks like a great place to hunt.
Congrats to all on a fine hunt and some nice animals!
Nice shot Curt, looks like you guys had a great time.
David
Great hunt, congrats!
Thanks for taking the time to post the great stories and pictures, guys!
Congratulations Tracy and Curt! :clapper:
Thanx fellas...
So....the rain had finally quit, but the wind sure hadn't!!! It was blowing, and blowing hard with gust up to 30-35mph....but we were gonna hunt for sure!
I headed to the ladderstand I'd put up the day before in the monsoon..."Guru's Gap"...
I got settled in, and was getting seriously blown around. I mean there were times I held on to my bow with one hand and the tree with the other!
I wasn't there a half hour when all of a sudden I see a big buck come busting out of the timber to the west of me about 80yds away...running flat out, tail down.
He runs out into the bean/weed field as I reach for my bow....runs a complete circle around a huge brush pile that was in the field....then heads north still running and disappears....what in the world????
He appeared to be a big 8, but could have had more....
Just as I'm about to hang my bow back up, a small buck comes busting out and does the same thing...except of course he doesn't do a complete circle around the pile...he does a half circle and runs straight toward me and stops at 10yds.....figures!!!!!
The wind had these deer on edge, he hung around nervously for 30sec or so...then took off to the north as well...
The brush pile...
As the sun was getting lower, with the wind still whipping, I notice a deer to the east out in the scraggly bean/weed field to that side of me(this stand covers the "gap" in the hedgerow that the tractor uses to get from field to field).
Soon I could see a really big doe, a "normal" size doe and a fawn heading toward me...but the wind had that big doe as edgy as a Texas deer at a corn feeder!
They ended up closing to about 50yds, then the big girl just kinda wigged out and they all left the field....dang it, I wanted to fill my doe tag!!!
The night ended beautifully...
That was the first night we had seen the sun in days, maybe since we got there. I could see the clouds clearing and oh it looked so good when that sun popped out.
Tracy
Well done little brother. Makes me wish I was back there. 3 of my favorite people to hang out with bar none(should have been 4), a great camp set up, good food and excellent deer hunting.
How could anything be better. Keep it coming Curt! Its all yours.
Curt, wonderful pics. The best thing is I recognize everyone of those areas. I'll be stomping that ground again with my buddy Steve Grice (Jacobsladder), Tim Harms from Braveheart Archery and Jim Jones from Firefly bows in four weeks. Can't wait, Kenny is the ultimate host for sure. It's not about the harvest, it's about the memories and there's plenty of them hunting with Kenny.
:archer2:
Looking forward to it Mike!
Before I go any further.....I do need to say a few things....
Anyone that has read this thread knows Terry was supposed to be with us.....I've refrained from saying anything about that only because I probably drove him crazy the day I was leaving, and 2 days into the hunt with texts asking him when he was coming at first....and then if he was going to make it at all.
We talked several times before I left as departure day neared.....I knew there was a chance he wasn't gonna make it, but I also knew he'd do all he could to join us....in the end, as you know he just couldn't swing it.
I totally understood, believe me I totally understood.....but I'd be lyin' if I told you I was very, very disappointed that my buddy wasn't going to be there....it had been a year and a half since I'd seen and hunted with him and we were both looking forward to this trip so much!!
We knew there'd be other hunts, but it hurt not having Terry...
As great as this trip was, there was , for me, was a huge emptiness that I felt every day out hunting because the guy who's become one of my best friends in the whole world hadn't made it....I just missed him....
So on to Wed morning....Now I would get to hunt the stand Tracy helped me hang the morning before...
I loved this area the moment I laid eyes on it and was so looking forward to get in this stand and wait for daylight. The first deer to show up was a tank 10 pointer that would easily go in the 130's!!
I watched him eat Honey Locust bean pods for a few minutes then move off....what a buck!
About 10 minutes behind him came a doe eating bean pods as well. Then an hr later another doe.
Deer aren't the only critter that like bean pods...
When I got down I snuck over to find a tree close to where I'd seen the deer....the big bucks track....the pix don't do it justice...it was huge!
When I got over there, I hoped I'd find a great tree in the perfect spot, but that wasn't the case. But I moved the stand to the best I could find. I couldn't wait to try the new set-up.
I walked out to the 4 wheeler and headed for the house taking a few pix along the way...

I'm just getting caught up on this thread! Congrats Tracy and Curt!
Bisch
The AR guys wanted me to come over and hunt with em last nite, so I sat the "Guru Gap" .
I love the view, and the background cover in that stand. You can shoot probably 300 degrees too!
I think Curt is like my bro, he and I pick the same trees even when we look at em at different times!
I jinxed em tho, nobody saw any deer last nite from the stand!
Curt, I did see this right in front of stand! I know you wanted one!! :D

great thread!
awful proud of himself too!
Glad you said it!!
Heck I'm proud of him :biglaugh: and I'm kind of embarrassed too!
Tracy
Nice seeing all the pics and hearing the stories.
Ya know, after not being there 2 years, and if I make it next year that will be 3 years...I know how woods change, and blow downs go away, and areas fill in...
Bet it will look different for sure.
I missed this hunt tremendously.
Keep typing guys....
Keep up the updates. I am enjoying this thread.
okay shouldn't somebody be hunting this week we need to hear something...... :campfire:
okay shouldn't somebody be hunting this week we need to hear something...... :campfire:
Update- the guys from AR put forth a great effort, but didn't take any deer home.
There is a group here now but I don't think they frequent Tradgang . They have seen a lot of deer and missed a couple so far. They wanted to come in early so I told em early ok but not late. I like the deer to have some time to settle down before next hunters come. Guess it wouldn't have mattered since gun starts week from tomorrow.
Buck down, sorry didn't get a pic where I can post it.
Best buck to date , 11 pt with one broken off.
Shot from the ol gap stand!!
Kenny just texted me a couple pics.
