Title: How do you keep mosquitoes away while hunting?
Post by: jmar595 on September 28, 2007, 11:22:00 AM
Went out scouting this morning and got eaten alive by them. Season opens tomorrow and they are a real distraction and make you move too much. is Deet repellant okay for this, can the deer smell it?

Thermacell...it's all  you'll ever need and the odor, which is negligible does not bother deer or bear. We use them all the time in the early Fall season.

Lowe's or Academy.  I used one for the first time a few weeks back and not a bug!  I turned it off the last 10 minutes of the hunt and sure enough the bugs started buzzin.  Great product.

They cost about $22-25 for the base unit and $10 for refills. You can buy a carrying case too.

I can not use any spray with deet it makes me sick. The best spray I have used is avon skin-so-soft bug guard plus unscented. The mosquitoes are very bad in Ga. this year. The first day of bow season I did not have on any spray when I went hunting. When I got home I looked like I had been shot with a 12ga. with a load of #8 shot. Now I spray down real good before I leave home.

Mr. jmar595,
For us, we have found nothing works better than some form of deet.  Next best is "Badger Anti-bug Balm" which does not have any deet in the mix.  It just seems to require a little more frequent application.  Otherwise, can't fault the "Original Bug Shirt" (& pants if necessary) for excellent protection; bugs can't bite through it but is a tad bit on the warm side if moving about.
Best Wishes

Skeeters are bad but I hate chiggers with a purple passion and where I hunt there are both. I also sweat and I haven't found any "scent killers" that take care of that so I spray on the repellant and hunt into the wind. When you're scrathing those places you can't scratch in public it don't matter what you smell like they're going to see you moving anyway. I still hunt and "snoop" so I don't imagine the thermacell would work but don't know. Guess if I was slow enough like I ought to be, it would.

I keep my face to the wind and smoke a corncob pipe with dunhil evening pipe in it.

Yesterday during the evening hunt, I went in and set up under a beech tree. The mosquitoes were swarming me like crazy. I couldn't hardly get set up for the things. I pulled out the thermacell and as the pad started heating up they started leaving. Before long they were gone. Now I won't go out early season without one.

Went and bought a thermacell yesterday. Tried it out this evening while shooting in the backyard. Great product.

THERMACELL for sure........Eating garlic , Vitamin K or Thiamine works well.
Grandaddy swore a rolled up sassafrass leaf tucked behind your ear works.
I tried it a couple of times but you have to keep the leaves fresh.
Bug suits work great and you can wear shorts underneath when the weather is warm enough for skeeters.

Deet works, but I don't feel well later. Thermocell works great, I mean great. Follow the instructions. For those who say it doesn't work in a wind, neither do the bugs.

I agree (wholeheartedly). And for just light breezes, I just move it to a different place on my stand for the best effect.

Yeah...just what a bowhunter needs to do swat bugs and give up his position to all the animals.

That's what I was thinking too Terry. I went and bought a thermacell, they work pretty good I'll admit. They smoke slightly though, but they work.

Just aim a little lower from where the wings join the body...
But seriously...Deet works great, but I really hate having such a harsh chemical on my skin.  I'm sure we'll discover it causes cancer someday.  I've had good luck with Permethrin on my clothing/gear (let it dry before putting clothes on).  It's slightly less effective than Deet on mosquitos, but even better on biting flies/gnats.  And, it lasts up to 2 weeks with one treatment.

I picked one of those up before going moose hunting in Ontario last year. Money very well spent.

But with the smoke you get a great wind direction indicator.  Two products in one.

Another vote for thermacell.  It takes about 5 minutes for it to kick in but after that you'll not have any mosquitos around.  You can get a morning hunt, a evening hunt and another morning hunt out of one full cartridge.  They also make an attachment that clips to the outside of the screen that holds a wick that you can put scent on.  I use both the repellent and the wick at the same time a have deer come in down wind all the time.  You can't go wrong with the thermacell.  A very good buy at about $20.    BOB

At the advice of my fellow tradgangers I bought a thermacell.  I've been out 4 times this year already including one afternoon when it was 93 degrees and hunted till dark.  These things work great!!!!!  NO mosquitos!!!   I wish I woulda bought one sooner.

I have used Thermacells since they came out. I spot and stalk hogs with them 12 months a year...even if the wind is blowing, I use them. I never get bitten by bugs.

If the wind is blowing, the skeeters lay down anyway, and if it stops, the TC unit does its job and keeps them away from me.

I haven't sprayed anythign but Permanone for ticks in 6 or more years and do not miss DEET one bit...from the way it hurt the finish on bows to the way it made my stomach grow immensely large, I hated it and think the guy who invented TC should be given the Nobel Prize.
