I got out this evening at my buddy's house. Sat on the ground with my ghillie on. At 6:10, I hear crunching at a trot. Two does coming down the trail. I guess I set up a wee bit too close to the trail, because the lead doe almost run me over. lol. She stopped at 10-12 ft. She saw the blob that was me, and did the head bob, foot stomp shuffle. The second, bigger doe then came closer and did the same thing. I could hear a third in the bushes behind them. Those two had me pegged, didn't know what the heck I was though. They did everything to try to get me to move, but I was a statue (on the outside, shaking like a epileptic on the inside). Couldn't get a shot off with one or both of them looking through me the entire time, plus the small tree in my way. Then came the blowing. But, still they wouldn't leave or commit to going past me. After 15 minutes or so, they finally gave a series of snorts and ran off back the way they came. What an intense hunt, being so close at their level was awesome. I'll try them again next week, and sit more off the trail.
Very cool!!!
It is such a rush being that close at eye level. Very addicting!
Love it! Congrats on the rush, haha.
There is always cool things happening in the woods if you let the critters get close enough to show you!
Sounds like an awesome hunt!

Nothing like being CLOSE!
Sounds like my kind of day in the woods!
Yup, with planning and patience, you CAN get real close. . too close even.

Great story. I seem to always set up too close to the trail, and have been doing it long enough that I should know better.
Haha awesome to hear this kinda stuff. Love hunting on the ground!
I almost always end up "too close". I really need to concentrate on backing off the trail a little more.
Sounds like you had a great hunt! Keep it up!
That's the best.....I had deer 2 different times at 8-10 feet. Neet when you can see their eye lashes.....lol!
Now THAT is hunting at its finest.... Those ghillie suites are a lot of fun for close encounters.
LOL - been there a few times myself. Ghillies are my favorite camo when ground hunting..... kind of got to be an obsession with me and I add more material each year (art ferns, leaves, etc.) I actually had a fawn come in while I was scouting last summer and he/she decided to sniff my suit and actually tried to eat one of the artificial ferns :)
Of course I have also had coon, squirrels, skunks and armadillos try to climb on me.... gives me the willies when I sit 30 minutes waiting for first light.... you just never know what to expect.
Yea. I have had squirrels jump on me as well as birds landing on me. A few days ago I had 2 does working into range. I was in a ghillie suit in a standing cornfield. The deer were out in the open on the edge of the field. They were about 20 yards or so and didn't have a clue I was there. I was waiting for one to give me a good shot when I saw a buck emerge from the woods. He was a really good buck so my plans for the does immediately shifted to him. The does eventually moved off and the buck never came close enough. That's how it goes! Very good night of hunting.
I've been wanting to try a ghillie suit. I may have to get one now. The only time I get that close on the ground is if I'm asleep. LOL Josh
