Title: Primitive kill #2
Post by: scrub-buster on October 08, 2014, 01:26:00 PM
This morning started out bad.  I was running late and still half asleep.  I got all dressed and ready to hit the woods when I realized I had forgot to get my bow out of the house.  I don't wear my hunting clothes inside so I had to get undressed and run inside to grab my osage bow.  Since I was so late I went to the stand in front of the house instead of the one I had planned on hunting from.  I was only in the stand for a short while when I got a shot at this one.  I haven't been seeing much at all in the woods.  I wasn't crazy about shooting a small one but I have been out of meat for months.  It stood there quartering away giving me a clear shot at 7-10 yards.  I just couldn't resist.  When the arrow hit it I saw red when it took off.  It ran up the hill behind me and then took off running down the road.  I got down and followed an easy blood trail up the hill.  When I got to the road I looked and saw it piled up right next to my sisters goat pen.  I had to laugh when I saw it laying there in the road.  The shot took out the liver and one lung.  I was worried I had hit guts but they were untouched.  It ran about 50 yards before dying.  I used my osage hunting bow that I built last year and a hill cane arrow with a band saw blade trade point.  This is my second primitive kill.  It should be some good eating.

He's not been around lately, Clint. He must know its hunting season plus with all the acorns on the ground he doesn't need to rob my hummingbird feeder.    ;)

Thanks guys.  This was the first time it I used all self made equipment.  Last year I shot my buck with a stone point that a friend made for me.

Blaino, that point is an inch wide and a little over two inches long.  Its a single bevel made from a band saw blade the maintenance guys save for me.  It makes a great trade point.

Pat, good luck this year.  Maybe you should hang a bunch of hummingbird feeders around your stand.

Great stuff! Congrats! I still remember your buck post from last year. I'm hunting the whole season this year  with one of 2 selfbows I made. With any luck I'll get my 1st primitive kill. Again congrats!

Easiest drag ever.  Our property is all hills and they usually die in the valleys so it was nice to have an easy one for a change.

And my hunting arrows.  Made from Hill Cane that Pat B traded to me.  I use a lanskey sharpening kit to get them sharp enough to shave the hair off your arm.

I ad the shaft of a 16 penny nail inside the shaft right behind the point for added weight.

This arrow is a little different than the one I killed the deer with.  The kill arrow has a self nock painted white.  This arrow has a plastic nock.
