Title: Do I need heavier arrows?
Post by: Branpoes on October 07, 2014, 06:42:00 PM
I'm shooting heritage 150s at about 29 inches, 125 gr montecs up front.  I get good flight with them and hit well.  But I always look at everyone else's setup on their posts, and see a lot of heavy weight up front, either through weighted inserts or just heavy heads.  Any reason for me to go with a stiff arrow and more weight up front for white tails?  I'm shooting 45 lbs. thanks

I don't know what your total arrow weight is but if it is 400 or more, I'd be satisfied. I'm hunting with about 451 grain arrows this season. I've had similar results on white-tails from 414 grains to 550 grains out of same weight bows (46-49 pounds).

That should be fine for deer, especially since they are flying well !

Yup....get those broadheads sharp, hit what you need to, and it will be OK.

As said above, you are fine. I am shooting the same poundage and my arrows weigh about 460gr and hit hard enough to handle what I hunt. Those wiley blacktails!

Buy a half dozen shafts and fix them up and give them a try during the off season and then decide whether you want to go with the heavier arrows. Heavier arrows tend to be quieter, lesser bow shock, and penetrate better.  Lots of good reasons to give them a try.

What is your total arrow weight?  What is "heavy" depends on the set-up.  A 500 grain arrow is heavy for a 40# bow, but not for a 70# bow.

If the arrows fit your needs, no reason to fix what isn't broken.  If you aren't happy with them, then you might want to tinker.

Your just fine, I hunt with 400 grain arrows out of my 45# recurve... Put it were it needs to be and you will have dead deer...

Dr. Asby's tests show that heavier arrows had better penetration, but that being said, if you're hunting deer, it doesn't take as much as you might think.

Believe the following arrow will offer both visible and possibly vital penetration gains:

Victory VForce HV350...~29 1/8"...12 gn insert...250 gn 2 blade...~25.4 EFOC...~480 gn total

Arrow Dynamic spine was based on the current shaft and was assumed to be well tuned.
