Title: New Elite Arrows/Ron LaClair Autumn Legends for camp
Post by: Ray Lyon on October 07, 2014, 09:23:00 AM
We're fast approaching the Shrewhaven Lodge camp week and of course I'm always keeping in mind the little tidbit's that Ron LaClair passes along-whether directly or indirectly.  Paul Jalon, owner of Elite Arrows (Tradgang sponsor) makes special arrows for Ron.  I've admired these arrows at camp for several years.  I've shot Kevin's Autumn Ledgends and Roger's Sitka Supreme's and I'm amazed at the straightness and perfection in detail that goes into these arrows.  Their flight is second to none.  Well, after reading Ron's little tidbit on his website about moving back to wood arrows from carbon's (I do love my Axis carbons), I couldn't resist the pull any more. Roger Norris had some left over Ace Standard 165 grain broadheads from his summer shows so I called him and had him send me a half dozen in anticipation of getting the arrows. Well they came yesterday and absolute perfection is the only words I can think of.  They spin like an aluminum arrow in your finger tips and there's not a line or feather out of place (and of course Ron's Autumn Ledgend poem is included in the box as a nice reminder of our passion).
    (//%5Burl=http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/shrewshooter/media/NewAutumnLedgendswithAceStandard160grainheads_zpsd9966767.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/NewAutumnLedgendswithAceStandard160grainheads_zpsd9966767.jpg) [/IMG]

I swapped out the field point Paul had put on each arrow with the Ace Heads and some 160 grain field points and snapped a couple of pictures. Then out to the range with my Super Shrew Lil' Favorite and 2 field points and one broadhead arrow.

 (//%5Burl=http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/shrewshooter/media/closeupRonLaClairAutumnLedgend_zps96d84c9c.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/closeupRonLaClairAutumnLedgend_zps96d84c9c.jpg) [/IMG]

Each arrow was spined from 60-63#'s and grain weights with 125 grain points was marked on the box as 550-560 grains.  That put these arrows at about 600 grains and I'm shooting them from my 44# Super Shrew.

I'm not a paper tune guy, I like to shoot mix of broadheads and field points and if they're flying together then I consider them tuned.  So my first group is a little to the right.

 (//%5Burl=http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/shrewshooter/media/FirstgrouptwofieldpointsoneBH_zpscac42f8a.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/FirstgrouptwofieldpointsoneBH_zpscac42f8a.jpg) [/IMG]

Nock point seems good, but fine tune with a little brace tweak (and probably a little hand eye adjustment subconscious tweak) and we're dialing in now

 (//%5Burl=http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/shrewshooter/media/secondgroupadjustedstringbrace_zpsd330b3d6.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/secondgroupadjustedstringbrace_zpsd330b3d6.jpg) [/IMG]

Now it's time to step back a little farther (25 yards) and remember these are close to 14 grains per pound of draw

(//%5Burl=http://s1246.photobucket.com/user/shrewshooter/media/stepbackto25yardsandalreadymessingwithfeathers_zpse7d00f36.jpg.html%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg617/shrewshooter/stepbackto25yardsandalreadymessingwithfeathers_zpse7d00f36.jpg) [/IMG]

It's time to start polishing the edge on those babies because the Lil' Favorite and Autumn Ledgends are ready to head to Shrewhaven Lodge.

Paul Jalon is truly a master arrowsmith. It feels right to match some incredible cedar arrows up with some heads (Ace) that I used to dream about as a kid in the 1970's when I was looking through my Kittredge Bow Hut catalogue.  Hopefully some deer or a turkey will cooperate with me at camp!

Really nice looking setup, I was just thinking today about increasing my arrow weight to help silence the bow.

Lookin good Ray, those "bucks" around Shrew Haven will be in trouble this year.   :archer:

Here's the Autumn Legend poem

QuoteWhen summer's gone and leaves turn gold

from frosty mornings to colors bold

Our hearts are pulled to the woods again

where hunting time must soon began

With bow in hand and arrows true

the goal is clear what we must do

Release the hunting spirit bold

then Autumns Legend can unfold

Yea buddy, with the hard winter and no doe tags for our hunt unit, it'll be slimmer pickin's with the deer and a bucks only year for camp---however if one makes  a mistake, I like my chances!!!

Nice shooting Ray and good write up.  When I bought my 51# CH from Ron a few years ago, he recommended Sitka Spruce and Paul Jalon did a great job on the arrows.  I still have a few and they have withstood the test of time.  A nice shooting arrow.

Roger, I'm putting some large rocks in my Bison Gear Haversack--just in case I forget and walk out of the cabin and drive off without my bow, I can stone the grouse.

Those are really nice arrows. I once had 2 sets of my own.  One shadow wing and one autumn legend. They weren't matched well with my bow so had to let them go. But I do remember the quality in the craftsmanship was incredible.
Best of luck with them.

The 56" Lil' Favorite Super Shrew is a sweet shooter for sure.

Those are stunning arrows. I have been kicking around having Paul build a set for me. I build wood arrows but is like to see what a good arrow from a true arrowsmith is like.

Good luck Ray, and to all going up to Shrewhaven! I hope you have a safe and successful hunt.

Those arrows are almost too pretty to take out hunting... But they'll be even prettier with a crimson dip.

Jon, I've always enjoyed making wood arrows however these are way out of my league
