Title: Brass insert or heavier BH?
Post by: Jayb on October 07, 2014, 07:28:00 AM
I'm shooting CE Heritage 150 @27" with 100 gn brass insert and 125gn points and they fly like lasers. I'm thinking about getting Simmons shark screw-in since love my glue ons. Question is will my arrow flight change if I use 225 or close to it BH?  Then again should I stick with the rule if it Ain't broke?
Thanks

Depends what YOU want from your set up.

Some of us like a bigger cutting surface, some not.

I like the 100 gr. insert because it is fairly long and give me the sense it's giving a slight internal footing effect, but then I tend to use an outside "Over-footing" on my carbons to extend that further.

Tuning becomes very personal...what works with one bow/arrow/draw length may not for another with the same set up...shooting fingers does introduce some variables.

If you continue to use a 100 gr. insert and a 225 where you used a 125 head, I would think you'll get different results... I'd try some 225 field points first to see... I keep all weights around in FP to check such curiosities.

One could lighten up on the screw in insert, but then it becomes a "weak(er)" link.  Adding tail weight tends to stiffen carbons to compensate for the heavier point weight, as does shimming out the side plate.

Some find carbons VERY forgiving of point weight changes, but I shoot rather longer arrows so no good experiences there to share.

Again, tuning is personal.  All the advice possible won't guarantee YOUR results till you try...but FPoints might be a cheaper alternative way to find out...

Good luck!

Thanks. To clarify I'm not planning on using the 100 insert & heavier point. I wanted to see if McKnight would change using heavier point w/o the insert.  Yes I like the insert also for internal footing

Thinking about getting he widest nastiest shark then work on getting back to the 225 mark

Jay, I think Doc knocked it out of the park.

I can share with you my setup. I use 50gr inserts with 125gr field points. I also use 11gr inserts with 165gr points. This creates an one grain difference up front.

I bare shaft tune and both combinations fly well for me. They both group in the same spot, bare and fletched shafts.

I too shoot the Sharks. I prefer the smaller broadhead 125gr for hogs and the larger 165gr broadhead on deer. I have had bad luck using the large broadhead on big hogs.

Good luck and give it a try, like Doc said it is a very personal thing.

I have so many broadheads already I don't need more.  I change the insert to meet my needs weight wise.

I'd say give it a go...experimenting is part of the fun.

Because the insert acts like footing when you remove it and put weight up front it will weaken your spine some. The only way you will know is to try it and see if your arrow flight is acceptable. If you have room you may have to trim your shaft some.

I go back and forth to tune certain arrows to specific bows. I am careful not to get too wide with the broad head because I fear, at my high 40's draw weights that I may suffer in the penetration department.

My favorite set-up the past three years has been a 75 or 100 grain brass HIT and a 125 grain Helix. This season I've changed quite a lot. I'm using Easton FMJ Injexion with the 20 grain insert and a 155 grain Helix. I had to have 155 Grain Deep Six field points special made for practice points. The 155 Helix are LW and so I had to refletch the Injexions to boot -- a LOT of trouble frankly when I could have just as well stayed with my Easton Trad Carbons.

I've seen it go both ways! I've done it with my arrows exactly like your saying and I had no change. But, my wife's setup reacted differently and for whatever reason, I ended up having to get a slightly heavier head when we got rid of the brass insert and went to the standards aluminum head and heavier broadhead. I spent some time coming up with a head/insert/broadhead adapter that was same weight as her old setup and then had to go buy another set of heads that were the next size up (grizzly broadheads). I think it was because she was on the borderline of being too stiff maybe and that I was in the middle of spine tolerance. So, long story short, you will have to try it and see!
