Does anyone own or has anyone shot one of Big Jim's Desert Bighorn recurves? Would love to hear your thoughts and see some strung pics of your bow if possible. Thanks in advance.
'pamike' has one and gives it many praises, that's quite an endorsement when considering what other bows he favors. I have been wondering about this model myself.
Don't forget, you could always do a test drive :)

You had to go and say that LOL. To be honest I've been eyeing that marked down rosewood lefty for a while, just haven't been in a position to go for it yet.
TW I have held one in my hand and it felt good. Now personally I dont prefer heavier mass weight bows so for me holding one next to the thunderchild or buffalo, I prefer the latter two.
Of course that's my preference and I have no opinion on performance as I never shot it.
I think unfortunately Jim may have a great solution for you if you are serious about buying one. Maybe you can still get in on his awesome sale????
In any case, if you get your paws on one, let us know what you think.
I received my Desert Bighorn from Big Jim, it is a wery well made bows with Jim's attention to details and fabolous choice of woods. The bow looks to be a fast and very stable shooter.
I ain't be able to give it a full test drive because a couple of day later I left for my hunting camp with the bow that I carried with me for that hunt.
I plan to try it when I'll be back home with a full comparison.
Mine is very fast and quiet. Great bow.

I just received my Desert Bighorn.Bigjim sent it to me then I sent it back and had him make a small adjustment to the grip.It now has the perfect recurve grip for me.Bigjim has built 5 bows for me and its a true pleasure to work with him.We bounce ideas off one another till we come up with a plan.
This Desert Bighorn is 60" 50@28 with mango limb veneers and Ebony-Koa riser with moose horn tips and overlays. The fit and finish is typical Bigjim craftsmanship, just outstanding.
As performance goes the bow shoots quick and very quiet, feels rock solid.

I have shot one several times, it was very fast and shoots great, if I was buying a recurve I would purchase the bighorn, but I prefer the thunder child.
Dang it, dang it, DANG IT! :banghead: :banghead: Man those strung profile pics are killing me! Now I love longbows but, I have been known to shoot a few recurves pretty well also. Big Jim has one on his website that I am sorely tempted with but, having a hard time pulling the trigger. I've got the funds but, for some reason I haven't caved and will probably regret it if I don't as someone else will get it.
TW I ain't gonna tell you what to do. I think deep down you know what to do.
Sorry for delay - well actually not really cause I was on an elk hunt in Montana!
The desert bighorn is a really sweet shooting bow. I am amazed at how quiet the bow is and how accurate I can shoot it. I prefer aheavy riser and this one ddoesn't disappoint. I know this is a stretch for some but this bow has very similar manners and qualities of my habus! Does not have speed of habu but does have shoot ability.
Of course it doesn't hurt that BJ uses unbelievable woods - mine is BW ebony.
If you have specific questions just pm me
Mike
Thank you Mike but, Charlie subliminally told me what to do! (You know you did Charlie! Kidding :D ) I went and ordered the one that I wanted from his instock selection. Hot Dang, I'm excited and can't wait to give this bow a shooting session. :bigsmyl:

Can you say, "Yee Haaaaw!?"
Sneak peaks off of BigJim's website.

I love flat cut zebra, great looking bow!
I think you will love that bow! Was really glad when I found these. Always liked Jims work but struggled with light mass weight of his longbows.
Congrats Wannabe', enjoy the new bow!
now you're makin me want that discounted lefty :D
my buddy and I shot these at the shoot in Ocala, we both left that shoot with one! he draws 32" and I am 29" we fired arrows from 700+ grains down to 400, carbons, wood, even borrowed someones aluminum just for fun. It shot ALL of them VERY WELL @ 16 yards. We could get a 6" group from the same bow with all kinds of different projectiles. We were both sold!
I am waiting on my set of limbs to match the riser I picked out. should come in this month!
L.R.
I find most recurve risers have too much mass and too many sharp angles. I.M.O. this one has nice smooth lines and I like the low/medium grip as well. Pretty bow.
Wannabe! You are so going to enjoy that Desert Bighorn. I got a chance to take a look at one this past spring at the Carolina Outdoor Expo in Columbia SC. The vice president of the SC Bow Hunters Association had one with the same specs as yours. It was a real shooter. I feel a field trip coming on since the Albany Ga area is home for my family!
That looks nice!
Thanks to everyone who posted photos and for all with input! I really was on the fence over this bow for a few days but, after all the positive comments and the way I shot my heavy risered Cornstalker, I am at peace with my decision. I hope I can shoot this one as well! I've got 'til Nov. 22nd for our late season to get it dialed in. Then, we'll be hunting together. :D
Let us know if you like it!
What did I say  :dunno: ;)
Hope you like it TW.
Me too Charlie! I tell ya, those folks at BigJims sure do make for a great buying experience! Really looking forward to shooting this bow and will post some updates when she comes in.
Man that's a good lookin bow!!
Thanks ya'll. I have a couple of kitchen sink bows going to be on the "stock bow" list in a couple weeks +-. Kitchen sink means they have everything but the kitchen sink on em :)
figured mango with spliced snakewood on the tips. Moose horn on tips, limb pads, and riser back and riser of gabon and Koa.
tiger myrtle with walnut tip splice with all the moose horn too and tiger and walnut riser.
figured mango and snakewood splice on belly and copperhead skins over pacific yew on back of limbs, tips, and riser back. Riser of koa...and I can't remember :)
couple others too.
thanks,bigjim
WOW!
Can't wait to see the new ones.....
Man Jim I'm screwed if there's a lefty among them. I'll have to sell my dog LOL. Looking forward to the pics
I bought one of Big Jims instock bows about three weeks ago. 62" 43@28". I am amazed at the way this bow fits me. Another one is in my future. :notworthy:
Mike, I'm assuming the in stock bow was a Bighorn? Got a pic? :D
Wannabe1, yes it is a Desert BigHorn. I always have issues posting pictures. The bow has Wenge/Morado riser and East Indian rosewood limb veneers. I like the extra mas weight of the bow and it is super quiet and smooth.
dabprice: Was there a particular reason for the Bear elevated rest as apposed to shooting off the shelf? Just curious if you had issues off the shelf?
wannabe-
I was playing with an elevated rest and arrows fletched with vanes at the time I took the photos; I usually shoot off the shelf and with feathers.
I didn't notice much difference using the elevated rest except, of course, with the vanes.
Roger that and appreciate the response. Got the antsies waiting for the bow to get here! Can hardly wait to shoot it. :bigsmyl:
