Down to one day and a wake up before the 2014 Mississippi Deer season kicks off :readit: Post up pic's and tell your story guys!
While us Southern brethren have to wait till the 15th to get going, I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the stories from the upper end of the state.
Although I may be going up to the Theodore Roosevelt NWR this Friday with an old friend to share a hunt, wish me luck!
Hope to see some thumpers again like youall killed last year !!!
Can't wait. Will try to be in a tree tomorrow afternoon.
Well I am excited, but between work and hot weather, just not motivated yet.
I was wondering if this thread would get started. Will be up a tree in the morning!
I'll be there tomorrow evening...gonna be hot though.
Approximately 8 hours from now....
Work this morn, but I'll be up this pm
Waiting on storms Thursday night to drop temps and acorns.....
Well it was a rough start to the season. Set the alarm on my phone, well it helps when you have no service to plug it in. It died woke up at 5:30. Running late no coffee. Got to the tree got up pulled bow up. Dangit forgot to hook pack up. Oh well I am getting winded no doubt. I was thinking to myself. About 6:30 2 spikes come in. At seven the wind switched and they bolted. At 7:15 i see a lone doe. She gets a little nervous and starts to head out. She stops in an opening at 23 yards, I come to draw, anchor, and loose the arrow. She ran about 40 yards and crashed.

Dang it man !!! Right off the bat. Good job Will. So glad your shoulder is well. Congrats !!!
I want to hear about this new Bowyer!
Congrats Will!
Heading up north for the weekend, hoping to see some deer and get a shot also.
Out for the evening hunt at Morgans Brake. So far have seen 8 deer with 5 being bucks and at least 2 of those meeting the 15" inside spread rule.
Tha only problem being none were under my stand :knothead:
We'll see what happens tonight.
We'll no blood spilt tonight, but an exciting hunt just the same. Was up in a ladder stand in a water oak flat where the trees were no taller than 20' and very thick cover
This border a CRP field of planted oats that was overgrown. The stand had not been hunted since last year and need some shooting lanes cleared up.
My farest shot would be about 15 yards max after cutting out the lanes. My fatal mistake was in not removing the cuttings from the trail. At the bewitching hour 2 does came in from behind me and would have offered a quartering away shot except for those cut limbs.
The lead doe locked up on them and would not walk past them. She stayed behind and to my far left with brush alway between us.
All in all a very good day, seen 10 bucks and 6 does and also had a group of hogs come through but no shot opportunity.
Where is Morgans Brake? Never heard of it.
Its a secret :bigsmyl:
Sounds like a hot spot South. Slow start for me...two misses so far. Lol, just when you think you have it mastered...
Still waiting on the 15th down here. Did go to the delta this weekend but we had to work at the camp. Thought we would get to hunt but one thing led to another and we had to work too long. It's ready now though!

Very excited to join this thread! I shot this nice doe on Sunday afternoon. It is my first traditional harvest. She didn't go far! I want to thank all of the guys that post their deer on this thread it is a great source of inspiration for us beginners. Thanks!
Possum,
Its a homemade rig I built several years back for a friend. My regular hunting bow developed a crack in the riser a day before the opener so he was kind enough to let me borrow it. Its a 62" 3pc RD LB about 52#. here is a better pic of it

I was going to hunt with a new one I just built but the forecast called for rain and I haven't sprayed it with finish. this is the one I will hunt the rest of the season with.

Congrats Clayton! You will never be the same... and Congrats WDL accept that dont look like a widow? New bow?
Pablo,
I will come back to your ranch but I want to shoot one of your axis deer! Beth Ann told me to invite you to my place, said she misses you. We need to get together before youth gun season. After it opens I will be dragging and skinning her and Danielle's deer the rest of the season.
Bonner
Tom,
The area is up in the Theodore Roosevelt NWR complex.
First time there, need to go back and learn more about it.
Those bows look awesome!

The state biologist tells me to shoot every axis I see. Bring Beth Ann and you guys can put a dent in them.

Sorry for the bad pic's, but was by myself at around 10:00 pm Halloween night when I located her.
I made a really bad shot as she took a step forward about the time of release and I hit her low in the paunch just in front of the hips quartering away.
I contribute this deer to the Lord and his great mercy, and a Simmons Tiger shark.
I was hunting on the ground and using a leaf suit jacket. Shot was from 11 Yards, and she travel 111 Yards. The Shark disemboweled her otherwise I may not have found this deer. Very little blood, but all of her intestines were located in a pile around the 50 yard mark and from that point I had little droplets of blood until I found her.
I awoke this morning to read your text and was thrilled. Great kill bud! Is that back straps I'm smelling this morning? You might fool the rest of the Gang but I know you hit her there on purpose so you wouldn't have to field dress her. Happiness is a steaming gut pile!
Got everything ready, just waiting to get into the woods. hopefully some time in the next week i'll be able to set up on'em.
Thanks Kirk,
We need to get together for a hunt.
Nice South!
Thanks Kyle.
good job SMB !!! congrats man !!!
I took this buck with my selfbow last week.

Congrats! nice buck.
Nice buck and bow. Onehair!
Need some more info, please!
I was trying hard to take a couple early does for the freezer. I had been seeing several does feeding on acorns but a small 4 pt kept pestering them and finally ran them off. This buck came in through some brush , darting left to chase the does and giving me a 15 yard moving shot. The arrow hit high dropping him in his tracks. He bawled and tried to get back up but I was able to get 2 more good hits on him. The racket attracted 2 coyotes than ran in but my last arrow was hung in my quiver and the dogs caught me trying to re-load.The bow is a bamboo backed ipe R/D, 64" and 50#.
Cool!
Awesome buck! And bow!
Thanks, I'm very glad I could get the two of them together
Congrats Mike, Great Buck!
Way to go everybody!!!
Awesome job to everyone!!

Here is my good friend and hunting partner Tony Kinton of Carthage MS with a nice Delta buck that he took with a take down osage that I made for him
Tony told me he had taken a nice buck.He and I are planning a road trip in a few weeks.
Those are both nice bucks. Killing them with all wood bows makes them even more impressive.
Bonner
Congrats
good job guys !!! hope there are more success stories for this weekend. This cold snap should have them on their feet. Ive been seeing a lot of deer but havent put it together yet.
I'm in a tree now, should be a good evening. Been slow for me too, only killed one doe. But maybe that'll change this evening.
Well, saw five does, and practiced a little catch and release...
2 nice bucks, for sure. Did you make the Bamboo backed ipe bow, Mike? From what I can see in the pic, she looks sweet.
any luck this weekend? Im seeing lots of deer. Just saw lots of rain today. lol
Been huntin hard this year and not on here much. Did not know Will had some issues, but he got it done anyway! I had a little shoulder isuue myself over the summer, nothing major, but decided it was best to stick with a light bow for this year just to pamper it. I see my old friend one hair got it done with the self bow. Consider me envious! My litte KBX has been my companion this year due to the afore mentioned shoulder issue. Been huntin deep in the Ms river swamps down at lake Mary all year. Missed my target buck cleanly on opening weekend, it was completely the fault of the indian. Good news is, caught him checking a scrape at mid day on Dec 17th and got it done at 20 yards. Big, pretty 10 and my best buck ever. Hope Ya'll had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New year. (http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc447/swinestalker1/big102014onlake.jpg)
Awesome deer Swine.
Beautiful buck! Congrats cliff
That is a great buck, you made a perfect shot....congratulations!
Great Deer Cliff!
I haven't seen where Will has finished his post on the buck he killed early in the season and didn't realize he was having issues pray all is well.
Need to get one more on the ground this year if I can.
Dandy buck, pigsticker!
Great Buck!!! Congratulations!
Thanks guys. Season started kinda slow and rough, however, is really going well lately. Got on this nice public land 8 monday morning. (http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc447/swinestalker1/20148point.jpg)
Another nice deer Cliff! You on the ground this year also?

In a ghillie or natural ground blind. Both bucks were taken out of ground blinds .

Travis, that says a lot with the dandies you've taken over the years. Well done on a couple more great bucks.

Great job Cliff. When constructing your natural blinds what do you do to conceal your movement from the arms up as well as your upper limb? Make a hole to shoot through or draw as your deer steps behind a tree? Pardon the ignorance but I'm a climber who one day will want to try it the hard way!

From the arms up, I actually have very sparse cover. If you wall yourself in, you will limit your shot opportunities too much. The secret is a roof. I like to have very heavy cover or a large tree behind me and very heavy cover above my head to create a "tucked back in the shadows effect". You want that overhead cover jutting well out in front of you. Use black trotline cord and natural vegetation to secure and build a roof structure for your natural blinds and it will be the single most effective thing you can do to up your odds in my opinion. Certain trees will allow a ready made roof such as Magnolias, Cedars and sometimes pine trees, however, they have to be in the right place, which they typically are not.
Nice deer!
Great Thread....
Thanks Cliff, really like the trotline idea.
What ever happened to Widowdoublelung and those boys? I'm sure they had a good season unlike myself. Just haven't seen anything from them in a while.
