It's starting to smell like fall here in Northern Indiana. I was out on the Pigeon river today.

Overcast and a bit chilly. As I floated I kept thinking of how cool a float trip for either squirrel, deer, or both would be.
I might have to try it this year.
Any of you all do float hunts? :archer:
Mostly I've used my canoe to get to where I hunt. That said, on more than one occasion I've slipped up on hogs that never new I was there. Nuttin quiet like laying a longbow across my canoe and paddling slowly down a creek. I must say our water isn't nearly as clear as that in your pic. Beautiful!
Todd, that's a picture of a happy man!
Nice picture Todd.
This just gets me excited about my next hunt.
We leave Tuesday for our moose hunt. We have 80 miles of northern Manitoba river. Far enough north to see black, polar and grizzly bear. We could also see caribou and hope the northern lights will be out at least a few nights over 10 days. Oh and there will be brook trout in the river. Not sure I'm going to sleep well for the next few nights.
Hunting from a canoe is allot of fun and peaceful.
Abe
That is a great pic pretty place. Will be using my native ultimate kayak for some float hunts this yr.
J
It's on my must do list just need a new canoe. Sweet Todd
That's cool! I've been really wanting to try this, thanks.
Can't beat a float hunt early in the morning when the deer and other critters come down to drink and you're drifting along silently...
Looks like a great morning! :bigsmyl:
the solitude of a remote canoe trip..... unbeatable
good luck on moose Mark
I mean Abe.
Also in northern Indiana, my wife and I did about a 6 hour trip on the Tippecanoe yesterday.
The fishing was a little slow but, otherwise, it was a good day for it.
I haven't hunted it. Except for a few islands (most of them small), it's all private.
The one island that I think is legal to hunt, big enough and gets plenty of deer traffic would be tough logistically. I need a ride, help getting the canoe in/out and it's a pretty good paddle getting to it and back out.
Hunting first or last light would mean doing one leg of the trip in the dark.
Good luck Abe - that sounds like my kind of country!! Enjoy it all and if you get some cool pics, please post some here on TradGang.
It's a joy to see scenes of places I would like to hunt but probably won't. :)
Chad - nice to see you on here. Checked out the website, looks great!
mgf, The section I was in on the Pigeon today is mostly running through state hunting ground. I like hunting there, but thinking of doing the canoe thing. If I had another hunter with me we could work out the canoe thing with two vehicles. If I hunt by myself I can carry my mountain bike and ride back to the truck.
fmscan, any time on the water is a good time - right? :) Happy man - yes.
I need to give it a go this year. Good luck to all-y'all this season!
Post pictures!! :archer:
Nice pic Todd. What model are you floatin' there?
Central Ohio seems to be sporting much more color than up in your neck of the woods.
Irish Archer, it's a We-No-Nah Aurora. 16 footer and a nice all-round canoe for these parts. A bit heavy at 68# - but I can still get it... ah, lift it up onto the canoe rack. :bigsmyl:
I noticed the Virginia creeper is really turning, and some of the cottonwoods are losing leaves, but you're right, not much color here yet.
:archer:
Awesome. That's the first part of what a dream hunt would be for me!
Thanks Todd and Mike
I'm only getting about 6 hours of sleep of late. With two more good nights of sleep left (hope). The last night we will be dropped off at the river at 2 am.
I don't think much sleep will happen. Oh well we can hunt in Wednesday morning. Who cares about sleep when you can hunt.
Abe
Nice picture! Thanks for sharing and good luck with the deer season!
Bernie
Nice!
Cool Todd! Hey, I would love to be the other hunter! I would paddle the whole trip for ya, too!
I would love to do a squirrel float, and take my Steem-eze bow and backquiver full of woodies.
Miss the canoe shoot at Marshall. Going to have to get up there next sping at the primitive gathering!
Good shootin, too ya!
Steve
I wish I got out in mine more here is a shot over the bow of my cedar canoe (http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc491/cuboodle/F7203B16-5724-49EB-91B3-FE488E0EF43D.jpg) (http://s1214.photobucket.com/user/cuboodle/media/F7203B16-5724-49EB-91B3-FE488E0EF43D.jpg.html)
It's a great way to hunt. Some of my most successful turkey hunts were done floating the rivers down here in SC.
I've never done it, but since I saw a pic on this website a few years ago of a gentleman and a nice buck sitting in front of his canoe I've had a burning desire to make it happen. I just recently purchased a new canoe so just maybe....
never figured so many would have the same desire...I want to at least haul my game by canoe
Awesome picture my friend. After that "thing" happens, I say we hit the Moose John :bigsmyl:
great stuff Todd! hope all is well. Don't look so serious, that's supposed to be relaxing, where thinking no longer happens and peace takes over ;) .
I was thinking about the Johns cabin and whatever prospered with his book while I was up north after moose. Lots of time in gods country to think of things long lost.
Spent a few days with Troy's boys. Tj shot a nice grizz. Broc and I both drew bull tags and were hunting out of the same camp. I ran home to do some monkey wrenching on the rig and picked up a motor raft to get away from people. 40 yards....not quite close enough.
no stripper time for me this year..things are getting hard fast! snow's in the forecast for town. Was cold in the brooks last night.
Roger - You're on!
Dan, good to hear from you. Have been thinking a lot about John's book too. I need to check with TJ Conrads and other folks who have published to see what it will take to get it done.
It would be an instant classic and it deserves to be published.
Fill me in on TJ Graziadi's grizz and your moose hunting.

Canoe travel into remote hunting ,and setting up camp is a dream I hope to portage into reality very soon ;) .......SOLITUDE....... (http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p106/riverwolf01/RW1.jpg) (http://s126.photobucket.com/user/riverwolf01/media/RW1.jpg.html)
Riverwolf, I just got back from a fishing trip in Ontario. Hiked up to a lake and canoed for a couple hours. Loons, ravens, bald eagles, and some bass on the line. Great day. :)
:archer:
Beautiful Canoe Matt!!!
Will do Todd! Broc called last, we chatted about the hunt. Guess Troy came up, though I didn't see him. I'll drop ya line.
Cuboodle, that is beautiful! The canoe. the paddle, and the bow!
As well as the water and woods.
Looks just like here in the Green Mountains right now.
This thread is inspiring me to take my bow for a paddle in our old Malecite!
