Yee ha! Just one more week until early archery season opens in the northern zone. Then both north and south open on the 1st. Good luck everyone and please hunt safe. Wear a harness if you climb a tree for you and your family's sake. I'll be out Saturday morning. Who else will be out hunting?
Heading up to Cranberry Lake on thursday with my son and a couple of friends. Some fishing on Thursday and Friday , hunt sat and Sunday . Best of luck to all!

Heading North of 49 hoping it will be a great season!
Good luck to all and a safe season as well!
I'm in the middle of moving into a new house. I really haven't had a chance to step foot into the woods yet, so my season probably wont start till mid to late in October!! good luck to all!
Good luck boys, aim small miss small ;-) (hopefully hahaha) I'll think I'll be taking the 1st off won't make it up north for the early opener though.
I'm ready for sure.
Just woke up with a Sinus infection this morning. That's How I know season is here. lol. I hope to knock it out and be in the woods soon.
Good luck everyone.
I am ready for the Oct 1st opener. Can't wait. I've been shooting in the yard out of a tree stand for weeks but I'm also gonna mix in some ground hunting this year as well. Good luck and safe hunting to all!

Exciting times, for sure, my friend! Best wishes for you, your wife and the new born. Enjoy every moment!!!
Did you fellas see that we can't shoot pigs anymore? I don't understand; The DEC says they are a destructive, invasive species. Over the last 20 years or so, Spafford has been overrun by the critters.
Tim
Bowsey it is because they don't want you splitting up the sounders(groups of pigs). I don't think they understand how fast it can get out of controll. Hopefully they know what they are doing.
Good luck to all. Ken, hope all goes well & will be worth a few missed hunts. I'm in my tree stand right now bear hunting. I keep yelling "here boo boo" but nothin. Man this is tuff. Lol.
Leave it to NY to ban hunting feral swine when every other state that has them wants hunters to kill them whenever they are encountered afield.
NY is highering people with helicopters to shoot them , and outhers to poison them .
Careful Dan Bears are killing people all over even close to NY.

No more Pig Hunting? huh?
Getting real close!!! :campfire:
Heading to the North country on Sunday, spend some time in the big woods. Weather sounds good...maybe a bit warm but that's not so bad. Everyone have fun and shoot true!! :archer2:
Had one go thru @ 5:20 but about 60 yards away. Never came any closer. Ran into one on the logging road walking out last night. Made lots of noise & it finally moved off. Didn't act afraid of me tho. To dark to know how big it was.

Where is the info on that and where in the state are they doing it?
Thanks for the info; good luck to all this season and BE SAFE.
Tim
Found another good shed on one of my hunting properties last week while scouting with my daughter! That's 3 really nice sheds this year in that area.

Good luck out there everyone!
Good find Greg. Cute girl!
"Lefty" and "JK" are starting to vibrate on the hooks I hang them on. One day in Jersey wasn't enough. Been locked and loaded for 2 weeks now.
Tyler & I are ready to go!!!!! We'll just have to see how much time we get between his Football practice & games...
Good Luck, My Brothers & Sisters!!!!!
Chuck who.......? :dunno: :dunno:
too bad still haven't taken the rifle and bow hunting courses yet. It's been a busy year since I started shooting the bow. But I'm so going next year :D
Missed a bear last night around 20" after 6. Took fur off the top of his back but basically a clean miss. Saw a second bear but not close enough to get a shot. Good luck fellas.
Good luck Y'all :bigsmyl:
Beautiful morning in the North woods today, saw some bear sign......leaves are falling when the wind picks up.
Where does everyone hunt? Just curious. Are there any opportunities in the public lands, especially on Long Island?
good luck guys and gals
I'm a long way from Long Island, 200+ miles north and west. Just about in the center of the state.
Well my Lost Creek NAT did it's job & this time I did mine. I was feeling pretty down after missing the black bear Saturday evening, but feel much better after making a double lung shot on a smallish deer last night. Normally would have let it walk but needed some redemption. Fresh meat on last years tags tastes even better. Good luck guys & gals.
Congrats Daniel!!! :archer2:
Congrats Dan!!! WooHoo!
Dan...... :clapper:
Long Island .... Humm.... Brings back some memories. The old man wouldn't let me take my bow to college back in '68. But, I so wanted to hunt the scrub oak I saw out on the Island. I'm sure there were critters there... Long time back, now.
Thanks guys. Hoping it's the beginning of a fruitful season for all. Pretty windy this morning. Will be working the rest of the week, but good luck to everyone hitting the woods tomorrow.
 Dan
Headed out in the AM to the bow only zone of Albany County. Doing a morning sit in my favorite spot. Gonna hunt the downtown deer.....lol!
Looks like the perfect morning for Bow opener.
Good Luck everyone.
Nothing but wet feathers.....
Heard a 911 call on the sccanner this morning about 12:30am...
"Reported shots fired at the Fishkill Rurel Cemetary... possibly shooting Deer"
Man, I hope not!!! Didn't find any gut piles this morning like last year though.....
Good Luck, Everyone!!!!!
i'll be sitting in my office treestand today. wont get out till saturday with a 90% chance of rain here.
good luck to all..
Had a 3 hour sit, rained on and off the whole time. Chipmunks and squirrels was all I saw.
It could have been worse Ron.. You could have been at work lol.
hope to take a walk around the field this evening by my house.
Sat for three hours, and saw three does. Closest was 45 yards off, but they were there.
I got "smelt" by 2 old nannies from 25 yards behind me. Wind should have been blowing due east, wound up blowing south east and they winded me. Paid a grey deal of attention to scent control but there aint no getting over on a 3 or 4 year old doe in these hills, especially 2 of them. Next time.
Yesterday I witnessed 4 coyotes catching chipmunks, one was 35 yards. I also explored ALOT of ground on some " new to me" state land. I saw 9 deer and had a 15" 8 point run right to me within 15 yards but no good shot opportunity. I later discovered another hunter building a ground blind 150 yards up the ravine. It looks promising. I'm taking this morning off to help the wife with domestic duties then I'm heading back this afternoon. Good luck to all.
Had a little doe and button buck play around under my tree then lay down 15 yards away and chew their cud for half an hour. Later a 6pt came into 35yds but got a whiff of me and stiff legged it away ; he seemed miffed at my presence for sure. It was fun to watch it all and be back in the woods.
I should be out Sunday and Monday in NY, wife gave me a free pass hopefully she doesn't take it back.
While hunting with my good friend Mike Manassa, I shot this fat little 4 point in the Rodman area on opening day of the Northern tier. As if that isn't enough to make my day, I get to go back to Mike's house and have home made apple sauce and other baked goods made by his wife Shana. Always Great hospitality at the Manassa household!!

Family stuff kept me out of the woods these 1st 2 days, but I hope to get out tomorrow.
just missed a pheasant by an inch at 35 yards!
Nice 4 pt congrats, I got a nice basket 8pt this morning. Story is on powwow page under "got a workout this morning" good luck guys!!
Congratulations!
Congrats to you fellas, nice bucks. Glad you made a little time Ken, it can be done with a baby in the house you just have to be creative.
finally the work week is done and its time to party bowhunter style.
heading out in the AM, rain or shine. looks like rain, might need the waders.
Great Bucks Guys.
Ken, Glad to see you snuck out and you have a few pheasants around.
I am hunting public land in the morning. I am hoping the forecast is scaring some hunters and the rain holds off. If it dont, I'm getting wet.
Good luck guys.
Got out last night on public land nothing moving but the timber tigers (chipmunks). There seems to be a ton of them this year. Rain has me in today no fun getting everything wet. Good luck Charlie.
Hey Matt. I woke up and it was pouring, I waited for 30 minutes or so to see if it would let off. It didn't.
I don't have the gear to go sit in down pours. If it starts raining when I am out there, I get soaked because I will try to sit it out but I wont go out in it.
I'm with you Charlie.....I'm not fond of hunting in the rain, I'd rather been out in freezing cold weather than getting myself and my gear soaking wet. :bigsmyl:
Ya, the rain kept me inside this morning. I don't want to risk losing a blood trail. It happened a few years ago and it still bothers me. Good day to go grocery shopping, I guess. Tomorrow looks better. :archer2:
ronp......I agree!!
ronp,I stayed in this morning for the same reason. Finally got out yesterday and had 6 come by less than 15yds...does,fawns and a spike.Wasn't 'feeling it' so I let 'em pass.Hope I don't regret it later.
Saw zero today, let a spike go the other day.
I was blessed to take this small doe today. Broke in my new Bob Lee

Enjoy the cutlets Jim!
I had a good "sneak around" my place on the opener... No action except at Home Depot and the critter hunt inside my house!... :dunno: Guess I'm close to having things under control so I can spend time hunting in the woods on my next weekend off from work... :(
... mike ...
Nice Stone Knife.........
Way to go, Stone Knife :archer2:
Congrats stone knife.
Well done sir!!
Nice Jim
Knew that new Lee would make meat for you this season...good for you Jim!
Congrats stone knife!
Very nice Jim
Way to go Jim!
That's how to break them in Jim. A great morning in the woods today saw lots of different birds ,squirrels , one doe a four point and six point stayed around for over 1/2 hours crunching acrons . They all got the pass but l have the memories .

Good job Jim. Yesterday afternoon I had a couple of does, one was about the biggest I've ever seen, come in close but I couldn't get the shot I wanted. My wife was about a hundred yds away and had a high racked 10pt bust her on the ground. I think the cooler weather had them moving. Maybe tomorrow ...
I sat until 10 this morning. Lots of birds but no deer seen.
Congrats Jim.
Mike, no 4 letter words around here :nono:
drilled a pheasant this morning only to have it out run me in to thick junk!

Congrats to all you guys! :clapper:
I'm STILL in the middle of moving!! Congrats all who connected!
Got out for a couple of hours this afternoon. Turned out to be a real nice afternoon, saw some turkeys and some bushy tails. Looks like the deer and turkeys are cleaning the acorns up as fast as they fall.

Great job guys. I took a nice young deer on Oct. 2nd with my Stalker longbow.
That is the way to get it done. Congratulations Drew and Terry.
Good shootin Drew,Good eatin also.......Yum
Way to go fellas. I got out after court this afternoon to some state land close to home that Ive been seeing some bear sign in. I planned on doing some calling but the bear sign has dried up.
It was windy but on the way out I walked up on a big flock of turkeys and drew on a big hen but chickened out at the last second and that was all she would allow.
Nice shot Drew. You must have the string twisted up pretty tight on that bow because that doesn't look at all like the same profile that came out of my press lol. All kidding aside congrats.
Congrats guys. Still putting in my time.
Congrats again Terry! :clapper:
Thanks for all the kind words fellas
congrats Terry
Marvin , She only went thirty yards and heard her go down what a feeling :0)
Alex : I still haven't had time to put finish on my bow yet , work has been very busy

Congrats Curt
Looks like some deer are falling good to see. I blew it this last weekend. I had two doe show up at 30 yards like they were tellaported in. Well As I swung to get ready the big old mamma caught the movement. By her size she has been around awhile so no fooling her. She never spooked just kinda new something was wrong and walked the other way. Hopefully this weekend will work out.
Taking the redeye el cheapo flight to Niagara Falls tonight for a long weekend of bowhunting.
I'll be hunting near Arcade, NY. My buddy's family farm is there. I can't wait! I do a lot of hog hunting but only deer hunt a few days every year. The first legal deer that walks by is in trouble. Wish me luck and best of luck to all of you.
Good luck Tarponnut!
Saw 4-5 deer this AM........
Are you guys running into any scrapes up there yet????
Good Hunting,
Craig
I have not wandered around to much, but I have not seen any yet.
Saw my first scrapes on two different properties around Batavia Tuesday. Jumped a real good buck last night when I was coming out and this morning I had a little 6pt walk under my stand less than 2 minutes after I climbed up. Plenty of deer out there I just can't get a shot a big one.
Swampbow2,
Did you get my pm ? There is a trophy just waiting for you to claim it.
Bob
I will be out again Saturday morning. Hoping the wind forecast changes ever so slightly.
Good luck Jim D. you'll be in a nice area.
Good luck Tarpon nut ! You will be in an area with plenty of deer . I checked the major scrape in the area I was hunting Sunday and it had just been pawed a little bit ,most likely was the little six that came from that area and passed by me as I was only 60 yards down wind of the scrape. In about three weeks that scrape will as big as double bed !
good luck Jim
Headed out in the morning to the Albany Pine Bush. Trying a new spot I scouted earlier in June and July. I am very excited but think I may have some company. Found a new tree stand in the area in August.
Its a spot Christ Dewitt Named the Quartet.
Good luck Charlie. Text me a photo of your success.
Good luck Charles!
Almost got off a shot at a nice doe this morning.
Chased a few out in the darkness from under my stand. Had to leave early because my wife had an appointment and needed our car.
It sure was nice to be in the woods acting like a hunter again.
Has anyone noticed any Beech Nuts this year?

None to speak of around here, lots of acorns.
Have noticed a few beech nuts here and there but not many.
no beech nuts on the mountain North at all.
hope to sit for 3 hours tonight by the house FINALLY had a couple does on trail cam.
sat 4 hrs this morning. guns were popping all around . made me a little nervous i didnt have orange on.
wish the youth deer hunt was the first w/e of gun instead off columbus w/e.
kicked one up on the way out, back in the thick stuff,
guess it heard the guns too...
Saw a few beechnuts in Gansevoort, but not a lot.
The deer seem to be vacuuming up the acorns at a pretty good clip.

I heard it already :bigsmyl:
Had a deer come in while still dark this morning it hung around for about five minutes then snuck back into the pines all I could see was the tail and back of the deer as it was dark. After 2 1/2 hours I walked over 30 yards to find a nice size scrape. The first crack of a high power rifle at 7:05 really got my attention it took me a minute to realize its youth gun season .
Had 2 groups of 4 come by me tonight, some just out of range, and one was a small 8pt.They all entered the field from the same spot, giving me an idea where to sit next time.Sounds good,in theory, but we all know deer don't like to cooperate.
I went out this morning to one of the best days in the woods. This was my first " real " hunt since having my shoulder surgery last year , I've been working/ struggling to get back to shooting a high fifties weight bow and all that work paid of this morning. I was hunting a stand in Rush, NY that has always been very productive or maybe just a lucky spot. I got in my stand about 6:30 this morning and as soon as I got settled in I could hear something that sounded a lot like a buck making a rub. At first light I had does running like crazy about fifty yards from my stand, this lasted for about 10 to 15 minutes this kind of confirmed that there might be a buck in the area. I watched the does for about a half hour then it got quiet until a fox walked about 10 yards away from my stand , its amazing how they can sneak up on you without you hearing them. A little after 8;00am I could see a small buck about 75 yards from me through some thick stuff. I gave him a quick grunt which caused him to head my way. To my surprise he had two bigger bucks following him. The 4 pointer passed me at about twenty yards and hot on his tail were the other two, the second one was the biggest of the three . I had to wait until he was done grooming himself until he offered a good opportunity . I came to full draw just as his front leg came completely forward and after the shot he went less than 50 yards. When I got up to him I found that he had 5points on his left and 3 on what was left of his right side. If his main beam wasn't broken he would have been at least a 9 or 10 point. If I can figure out how to get pictures on here I will post them tomorrow.
That's great Alex, Glad your back hunting and shooting your bows. If anybody deserves a nice buck this year it's you. Congrats bro. Happy for you and looking forward to doing some bunny hunts with ya this winter. Way to get it done brother! :clapper:

Way to go Alex. Great buck!!! Let's keep them falling over guys & girls.
congrats again Alex on a great buck , I know you worked hard to be able to shoot and hunt this year.
Great looking buck Alex. congrats.
A heart shot on a good buck, you gotta love it.Judging by the rack it looks like he was a 'scrapper' too.
Alex, Congrats on a great deer and shot!
Nice buck!
CONGRATULATIONS, Alex!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Alex, nice shot!!

Nice deer,
Good luck izzy
Well done great looking shot!
Nice there's something to be said about being able to out smart an old doe.
Speaking of old doe's. I had a big ol gal come by my ground blind 25 yrds out this morning. She kept going down hill, so I gave a few fawn bleats and within a few minutes she came back. Had her at 10 yrds but she stopped short of my shooting lane. She hung around for a few minutes until she caught a little of my scent. She didn't freak out,but stomped and blew lightly a couple times and walked off. Iv' seen this Doe before during turkey season. She's a toad. I told her.......I'll be back!!!!! I was hunting with my primitive gear.
thanks for posting the pic izzy, my cousin owns some land in columbia county.went in at dark waited for light found a good tree to climb, after jumping six deer. 10 mins go by and two more does come by the big one comes under my stand. she gets 4 yards from the stand and auto pilot kicks in. next thing i know shes running off with my arrow sticking out of her. shooting a 58 at 28 i was surprised i didnt get a pass through. even though i thought the shot was alittle to far back. i gave her 3 hrs and after talking things over with a few friends, we decided i must had hit a couple of ribs. the blood trail started out sparce but costant. after about 80 yards the blood picked up quite a bit. another 20 yards and i found my deer. the arrow had taken out the liver and one lung and had hit the of side leg bone so know pass thur. should be a good tasting deer seening she had been eating soy beans all summer
Great Deer Kevin. Congrats!
Nice deer, those old does are very weary.
Congrats on the deer!
Awesome congrats to the guys knocking them down. I have had deer close but something always hapens . had a nice big doe 15 yards out just about to walk into a sot for a shot and she spooks because of another hunter. Love public land! Oh well there is always next weekend.
Good job Kevin . Did you get it near the house or by that far back field ?
Great job KWC good choice waiting sometimes them liver lung shots can take a little longer than you think congrats
congrats
Nice deer guys, anybody finding any scrapes yet?Found a huge one this morning it was 8yds from one of my new ground blinds.
Scrapes yes, but only from the usual gung ho first year bucks. Little early yet for the big boys. Instinct scrapes, that's what I call them.
Too warm and windy today so I raked leaves for 3 hours. An hour from now you won't be able to tell the difference but at least I tried. I shot a small doe Sunday. I needed to get out of watcher mindset and into hunt mode. Lately I find myself having a hard time focusing on the killing and without that intensity I am more likely to mess it up gawking when the moment arrives. Getting soft I guess (hope it aint low T !!). Anyway I made a long for me 25 yard heart shot on a broadside doe and watched her fall. Hopefully I'll have a buck story soon. Good luck to all.
I have seen 6 scrapes so far.
Warm sit this morning. I was surprised the deer were moving as much as they were.
Now if their hearts were in their butts, I would be eating venison tonight.

:biglaugh: Good one Ken, If their hearts were in their Butts, I would have shots most years, They even hold their tail up to provide a clear shot lol.
Here's a nice 5.5 year old doe I took in Columbia County with my 50lb Morrison and Magnus Stinger.

Holy Smokes, that's a HUGE doe it looks like a donkey.
Nice job.
Nice doe
Wow that's great! I would like to put her on the scale... Huge!
Paul......is that you.......nice big nanny!
Nice Doe Paul. Congrats!
Swamp. Congrats on your doe also!
Gerald, IT IS A DONKEY! HOLLY SMOKES! That head does look like a donkey though. Very nice doe for sure. Those old girls are no push overs. Congratulations on a fine animal. Way to go you guys. I reckon it's fair to say the NY boys do their share of killing deer with trad bows. I hope to be counted in the roster!
Thanks guys - I've got the meat aging in my spare fridge and will be grinding soon. Ron it is me - Terry took my compound away from me so I had no choice but to go Trad! ;) I went after elk last year in CO with it too but never got to draw on one. Good times though with a one man tent at 10,000 feet in a hail storm.
Congrats again Paul, I mean "Turkey1". You have now graduated and can retire the training wheels completely! :)
Seriously, great job in being successful in taking arguably one of the hardest animals in the US to kill with traditional archery equipment. Does don't get that big and old by being stupid.
Congrats on that monster doe Paul, and congrats on a great trad kill.
Nice doe one less queenbee.............
Nice big body doe paul! Congrats. I'll be hunting columbia county in about 10 days. Can't wait.
Congrats on some good deer fellas. I'll be hunting with Manny this weekend. Wish us luck and I'll be sure to take pics.
That Doe is huge!!Congrats!
Paul that's one huge doe congrats,do you know
what she weighed .
Good Luck Izzy and Manny!

Maybe not as much laughs as with Ray and his trucker stories but we'll have fun.
good luck fellas
congrats Paul
Nice job guys!
I was hoping to get out for the first time tonight but got stuck on a job. Deer were out all over when I was heading home. Missed a good afternoon I think.
Good luck to you all and hope you have good weather.
Nothing moving this morning except gray bushy tails. Hard to stay awake.....lol!
Had a Blessed morning out, I let a spike buck walk today. I called him in with the can up to 5 yards, saw another deer not sure what it was and a nice doe and button buck.
Izzy- I can't picture you, Manny, and Ray all in the same place with Ray's trucker stories.
I still smile when I think of those stories all the way to S. Carolina and back.
Finally got out this afternoon for my first sit of the season. Red Squirrels and chipmunks were all I saw. Really nice just to get in the woods though.
Saw another small buck tonight.
Rainy today I hope I can get out tonight but I will definitely be out tomorrow. Have some good trail cam pics of does moving so the boy might be following.
Saw 2 Tom Turkeys this morning. It was wet and noisy in the woods. I was watching the first at 40 yards an busted by the second that moved in from behind at 20. Saw another fresh scrape on the way out.
I'll be out again in the morning.
Toughing out the evening rain right now. Saw nothing this morning but was hunting near a swamp and the gunfire was almost deafening . forgot it was the duck opener today
Saw zero last night, going to slip out for a couple hours before church. Nice and crisp out today :D
Had a 4pt. and a spike come through around 9 am. The 4pt. came into the scrape but was just out of my comfort zone,so I let him walk. Also busted two going in this morning.Things are starting to happen with the weather change..............
At about 10:15 I saw a big bodied deer cruising the neighbors woods at about 100 yards. Pretty windy but a nice morning none the less.
I went out this morning a few miles away until 10:30 but didn't see anything but squirrels. My wife stayed home and hunted behind the house and saw four does and one buck. The buck was chasing a doe around who acted like she wanted nothing to do with him yet.
We might see some early Young Buck/Chaseing activity going on soon!!!
My friend Dean, sent me a picture of a 4pt buck & a doe that he shot, late yesterday morning, on the Fishkill Cemetary property we hunt. He was going to take the doe & when he shot her, she dropped within feet of where she was standing. The young buck, wondering why she wasn't running anymore, kept sniffing and nudging her trying to get her to either get up & run... Or stand up & prepare to be mounted!!! LMAO
Never one to let an opportunity slip by..... He shot the buck too!!!!!
Tyler & I saw nothing but squirrels this morning..... But hey, That's Ok! I'm on vacation for the next 2 weeks!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Sat for 3 hours this afternoon, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Seven sits and have seen deer on only one. Discouraging to say the least.........
I haven't been able to get out yet!! this is killing me!! No vaca time and busy weekends....Life's getting in the way of my hunting!!
Saw a nice buck tonight he came by at about 20 yards but the shot angle was wrong, next chance I had he was about 25 yards. That is just outside my comfort range so i had to let him walk.
Never saw a deer in two mornings of hunting other than a buck crossing the road Saturday morning and another buck flat out crossing the road this morning. I think it going to get crazy real quick :campfire:
I think you're right Bob.
Seems like every year... Contrary to popular belief, and wildlife bioligist's scientific calculations. The woods go wild in October!!!
The Does may not be ready... But, the Bucks know what's coming!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Saw three on high alert in green county last night. I Dont think I could a shot if I had a rifle!!!!
Had a good hunt this morning, saw 5 jumped one going in.Two were bucks.I have a spot on this ridge along a stonewall.Been seeing deer on the otherside of the wall, but its all small saplins and no place to make a blind or to put a treestand.I,m next to a huge maple which I brushed in.Just sit and watch those deer mill around, wind is to my favor there.I,m watching a scrape in front of me next to the lip of a ravine.I guess sooner or later I will get a shot.Good action though...........
Haven't seen much at all this year yet. Lots of acorns all around these parts again this year, plenty of easy food everywhere for them.
Had a little action tonight, had a doe then a small buck come in but they both smelled me, I was on the ground trying to out a hole in one of them.
Maybe it's picking up some.
I took another doe last night. A nice 15yd shot and 60yd, watched her fall, recovery. My left wrist looked like my left ankle yesterday and I couldn't hang on to my low grip recurve so I got out my straight grip longbow for a change. Forgot how quiet it is. At the shot another doe and button buck who were 20yds behind the one I shot didn't even spook. On the way home I saw a small 6pt chasing a doe.
havent seen much at all, two does ran across in front of my truck .
hearing the coyotes every night though.....
heading out in the morning provided its not pouring rain
Congrats on your Doe Marvin!
Looks like rain the rest of the week .. The weekend looks good I have this feeling ....
Congrats Marvin how about some pictures.
Congrats swampbow2!!! I struggle switching bows like that, maybe someday I'll just be able to pick up a bow and head for the door, well done sir
Marv congrats, you kill deer like you kill rabbits.
Thanks. We've got four adult kids, their kids, and a couple spouses, who like venison but don't have time to hunt so I've got to put a pile of them in the freezer. I don't have an account for posting pics .When (IF !) I put some horns down maybe I can email a pic to one of you to post for me.
Nice job Marv, I'm in buck mode now cause things are picking up.
congrats Marvin
3 hour sit this evening before the monsoons arrive, never saw anything except for the 4 deer that were standing in front of my truck when I left. I give up....... :dunno:
Give up ? It hasn't started yet !
Nothing much doing today. Windy and rainy..rain gear got a workout for sure. Plenty of bear sign and a handful of woodcock that made me wish I had my over and under but no deer sign to speak of yet
It started on the 27th of September......I mean I give up trying to figure them out. I'll still go, just not to thrilled about the amount of deer I see.......which is very few.
Keep at it Ron. Good Luck!
I am done hunting in NY until I get back from WI on November 7th.
Bucks should be pretty well heated up by then.
I should go with you Charlie........
I'm done too. At least until nov 11th when I get back from bow hunting in Minnesota.
None of my friends are seeing much either
The archery deer kill in NH is down 22% from last year at this point. We are just not seeing much here either.
Charlie, Good luck to you in WI
Things have been pretty slow in my area so I'm headed up to Cincinnatus this weekend to hunt at a buddy's camp.
Charlie, enjoy your time back home in Wisconsin, bud.
Have had some close calls this week.Passed up a half rack buck the other night and had 2 bucks come by last night but am looking for something a little bigger.Tonight I had a good 8pt coming in just before dark and he locked up at about 25yds when the wind swirled and he got a whiff of me.Waited for him to slip out before I climbed down.
Ron, Maybe I have room in my Duffel bag.
Good Luck Fred. Jeff, Glad you are seeing deer. I think you should sit where We hit that rabbit last winter, seems deer like that strip of trees  Good luck on a bigger buck and don't let tucker beat you to it ;) lol
Charlie,it looks like a great spot but too many bunny huggers walking nearby during the day and 20 yds. to the south is a piece of land I can't hunt/step on. :dunno:
I hear ya Jeff. To many nature loving City Hippies in your town.
Hey guy's don't tell my wife but I'm ordering a new Hill :readit: I saw some does this morning hoping for a buck this afternoon.
I was in a tree for 4hrs this am and saw nothing but squirrels. I'll try behind the house for the last 1 1/2 hrs tonight.
At last I will be getting out to do some stand hunting tomorrow. Up to this point I'v only been out with the primitive gear and hunting from the ground. Tomorrow starts serious kill mode. Good luck everybody!
Get em David!!!
:bigsmyl:
Oh boy Jim what's this new Hill gonna be like.
Man O Man, has it been slow this year for me , haven't seen a deer in 4 sits.

66" 45 @28 Wesley so it will have 5 lams of caramelized bamboo brown glass walnut riser. It's made to blend into the woods.
I sat last night and saw no deer but the wind has been wrong for me to sit where I would like.
This morning should be great for people. I spect there will be some killing goin on today.
I can picture it in my head Jim, nice.
I was duped by a buck this morning, saw 2. I'm debating on waiting till morning to go back out, calling for rain and winds in the afternoon here.
Was very still and quiet this morning, not even a bushytail real warm this afternoon, will go back out in the morning. We need some cold weather..........
Had a close encounter with a fisher this morn.Hung around under the stand for a little bit,was within 5 yds at times, had a stare down with me and headed off.
Passed on a doe tonight at about 10yds as she had 2 fawns with her.Guess I'm gettin' 'soft' in my old age. :D
Was just watching a documentary on the wild cats encounter and search in upstate ny. Just curious if anyone has encountered any Bobcats or mountain lion while hunting?

Yep, Last year while scouting, I heard a Bobcat yowl up in a big pine tree. I walked to within 20 yrds of him. He came down the tree and watched me while I talked to him. We sat there together for about 5 min. until he just slowly walked off. He had no fear of me at all.Others hunting in that area have seen him this year as well.First time I have seen one in about 40 years. The state opened a two week season on them last year.
Wet and windy this morning, rained all night, I got up and it had stopped. So I said it's on and went out the door at 6:05. Pulled in to my hunting spot and 2 big does are laying on the landowners front lawn......didn't even get up when I pulled in. Went to my spot and set up, sat for 2 hours in the rain [started again] and then it got real windy. Saw a chickadee that shared my hide for a bit.
Hunted behind the house yesterday morning. I had a doe walk by me before legal time as I was climbing my tree and later about 9:30 a very small bodied 6pt walked 20yds behind me and then spooked when he got to where he could wind me. My wife went out this morning but saw nothing. I'll try to get out this evening if it doesn't rain.
Dave that's neat about the bobcat I saw one over in Cameron . I saw one doe all weekend but the weather for next weekend looks perfect and I tool some vacation time . The buck sign is heating up saw three scrapes this morning that weren't there yesterday .
Bob, I hope your right about next weekend. I have Fri. threw Mon. off. I'll only have about 7 more days to hunt, so I'm praying for an active weekend.I did some scouting today as I haven't seen any deer movement this weekend. I jumped two deer out of their beds. One was a descent buck- at least a six point with a nice sized dark body. I encountered both deer in the mid to late afternoon.Haven't seen a trace of my does all weekend, although that's not unusual. I'm not sure if it's because their being pestered by the young bucks or if their just on another part of their turf.
Lots of deer movement tonight, things are picking up nicely.
Work keeps getting in the way of the best mornings to be out :(
Saw four over the weekend Sunday was a bust with the wind had them huddled up somewhere and it wasn't where I was!! Hopefully this weekend.
Another slow morning. Saw nothing but squirrels. I haven't come across one scrape or rub.
Let a few little guys go to grow. I won't be nearly as restraining if a doe comes by. Killed a big bobcat a few years ago in Northern Dutchess county.
Leave next Friday for 8 days of hunting in Indiana.
Was eye to eye with a buck this morning, same 4pt I,have been seeing.Couldn,t get a shot,he was on full alert and hot wired.Wind was perfect.don,t know how you guys get a shot on the ground it real tuff. Now I see why so many use the trees.............This was my third encounter with this buck and haven,t been busted yet.Hope I can pull it off next time.
Four hours ( my personal time limit ) in a tree and I saw nothing this morning but squirrels. I don't get it as there are new scrapes showing up now and the weather was perfect ! I should do better tonight ...
Good Luck everyone.
Talked to Pete who hunted the woods I did all weekend and he had bucks chasing does . 24 hours can make a huge difference .
Out tonight behind my house . It was a surprise to me that the acorns are still falling . 5:20 four raccoon then 5-10 min. later 1 more . 5:30 had deer blowing at me from down wind . Sounded to be 50-75 yd. off . I need to do major scouting .
May life's simplest things bring you the greatest pleasures !!!
I hear you Stone Knife..I've only got a few days left myself. Maybe 3-4 days before the gun season opens and then those public woods where I hunt will be overrun by the blaze army. Life just gets in the way.
I saw 5 does and a buck last night but nothing was within 50yards . Work does get in the way of hunting so after trying it for a few decades I've taken a break !
I'm going on vacation starting Thur. afternoon :jumper:
My last hunt was Saturday in the Adirondacks, buck only and I jumped a big deer on the way back to the cabin which gave me a perfect broadside shot at 20 yards. Only problem was its head was obscured by spruce and it only hesitated for a minute or two and was gone before I could ID if it was a he or a she. Literally a day late and a dollar short.
This week I am in training and getting home to late to drive to my hunting areas. As I was letting a few arrows go in the yard I had chasing going on behind the fence. Oy Vey!
Ill be taking some time off next week and things should be real good.
Congrats to all
Today while walking in to a new area I walked up on a bedded buck. I ended up having to take my boots off as it sounded like corn flakes, but I got within 20 yards only to miss him! Exciting hunt but I really need to figure out what I'm doing wrong when I shoot. My shooting has gone Kapoot lately. :banghead:

Ugh... Nice Buck!
That is the ultimate in my book.....to sneak up on one that is bedded. Look at it this way, you got a photo you will remember forever and you did not have to scrub the blood out from underneath your fingernails!
Good Hunting,
Craig
Very cool! My shooting was bad so I reevaluated my arrow setup, found out I was under spined and now my shooting is back on target(no pun intended) On A nice deer like that anything can go wrong.
Wow , all most , good memories .
May life's simplest things bring you the greatest pleasures!!!!!
That's an awesome picture, now you know he's out there looks to be a real good sized buck.
3 hour sit this afternoon till evening, wind was right, cold front moving in, so I went to the spot I had a shot last year from a ground blind. The wind held, the temp. dropped but I saw nada! I even took a nap before I went so I was awake the whole time......lol!
Today on a very short stretch on 390 there were four bucks hit in the road . They all looked like 1.5 yr old deer but they are searching for the does . It should explode any day now.
Going to be a cold weekend. The bucks will be traveling for sure. Three deer hit on 86 (17) on the way to Elmira this morning.
I saw my first deer on stand tonight , it's been 10 days since I saw the last ones, been real slooooow!!
But the good news is I saw 4 different bucks to and from work and bumped one headed to the woods tonight.
They were moving for me this morning... 3 bucks & 3 does...
I saw 3 small bucks this morning. All were up walking and grunting and I had a spike walk within 10 yards of me in a goldenrod field. Unfortunately I have to go to work now.
Not where I was!!!!! Go figure,LMAO!!!
Can't figure it out, saw next to nothing all year.....

Welcome to my world!! :goldtooth:
Well, I DID get a good nap today!!!!!
How about you Ron??? ;)
LOL......not today, maybe Friday!
Walked out of a house where I was working tonight around 6 pm. There were 8 does followed up by a nice 6 or 8 point, couldn't tell for sure. Should be bustin' loose any day now. Just need to get some time in the woods.

Going to be wet :(
Saw a buck at 25 paces too bad he came in on the down wind side :(
NOTHING this morning!!!!!!!!!!
Set from 7:30 to about 1:30... Lots of birds, a few squirrels... NO DEER!!! Not a tail, Not a flick of an ear... Not even a "I thought I saw one sneeking through the brush".....
NO SIGN EITHER!!!!! I found a few scapes last week. Pissed in them to try and freshen them... Nothing!!! A couple days ago, I took the tip of my old Grizzly and flipped a bunch of leaves in them... Yesterday nothing, Today nothing... No attempt whatsoever, to open them back up!!!!
Now I'm STUMPED!!!!! There is usualy a good deer population on the property we hunt. A good number of Does,Fawns, and young bucks. Usualy we see, or see sign of, a real bruiser or two. Most years, the woods are all tore up by this time with lots of scrapes, and all the cedar trees up to a foot in diameter, are all raked to hell!!!
This year??? NOTHING!!!!!
Hmmmmm, Whodathunkit.....
I hate it when that happens Woodchucker...get all excited because there are some scrapes and then they go cold for no reason that you can see
Did a short sit this evening, got a late start because the landowner wanted to chat. But I still went thru the motions of being a good hunter and again to no avail. Not a chickadee, jay or even a crow was to be seen. A pair of bushy tails had a race all over the place but that was short lived. I also have noticed all the spots that always had rubs and scrape are void of sign.......... :dunno: I'll keep at it.......
Today was to quite and Sunday sounds like it is going to be a hurricane!!!!!!!
I got to watch a hawk hunt today but like me he went away empty handed.
get you some sauce a birds chuck
I'll be out in the morning
Saw 2 deer all day... I think they were lost lol I'm at camp making some classic "Camp Stew" carrots, onions, mushrooms, long grain rice, black beans, diced tomatoes, and some moose meat the neighbor gave me... All my gear is dripping as it hangs above the wood stove that is putting out a little to much heat and today after hunting in the 30-40° rain that feels about right... I love Camp... I wish Gerald, David and Ron w were here for some stew!
:bigsmyl:
Ahhhhhhh.......camp and a wood stove, don't get no better. AND moose stew.......
I spent 10 1/2 hours in the woods today and saw 2 does, and I walked up on them .
You better be careful Jim you might have a dinner guest.
small buck and a doe seen this morning no shots
Had does feeding about 50 yards from me right under my other stand. Couldn't sit there cause they would have winded me, they fed for over an hour. No bucks spotted today yet.
Can't get out again until Tuesday after I vote. I haven't seen much action around the house or in my travels to and from work.
Deer down in Painted Post. :bigsmyl:
Details to follow!!!
:clapper: :clapper: Good for you Dave!
:campfire:
Well, just when you don't expect it, a deer comes marching toward you. I had just left the house and was going up my hill to retrieve a stand and move it the woods behind my house. I usually always carry my bow with me just in case. Good thing I did, cause as I approached a bench oon the side hill I saw a deers head above me coming from the left. I dropped to one knee and quickly drew an arrow from my EFA quiver. The deer was above me and I could see it was a nice Doe. She stopped with her head behind a tree and I pulled up and got ready to draw my bow. She cleared the tree and exposed her vitals for what I thought would be a clean 17 yrd shot. I drew in one fluid motion and picked the spot just behind her front elbow. As I released she turned and saw the arrow coming her way. She did the dip and twist but I heard the 482 grn arrow smack her hard. She took off on a dead run, leaping and bounding, and I could see the arrow sticking straight up out of her back. I thought "oh man" that's not good, but within 30 yrds I heard a crash and thrash. I couldn't believe it at the time and thought it was just her hitting some brush or something. Well I waited a few minutes to survey the situation and got out my little 10x binos to see what I could see. I was hoping she laid down, and then saw that a deer was moving in the direction of her flight. Another deer was there where I had last seen her and figured it must be that another doe was with her, or it was her and she wasn't that badly hit. After not seeing any movement for another half hour, I slowly and quietly moved toward the scene with arrow ready. As I approached, a nice buck got up and tore off and it was laying ten ft from the doe which had indeed been taken out by the supper sharp two blade Zwickey. That's right guys, this doe had a boy friend with her and I never saw him until after I shot the Doe. So low and behold the early girl is telling us that for some, the does are coming into estrous.I believe it's the buck Iv' been after, and hopefully he'll be back on the prowl tomorrow morning when I'm sitting in my stand. I was hoping to get a little of her urine, but see didn't have a drop in her. @#%$%..it Well I got a nice doe from the ground so here she is....

Nice deer my friend! You are deadly with that stick and string. That'll be some real good eatin'. Good luck tomorrow, too!
Oh, and thanks for sharing the hunt. I'm proud of you Man! :archer2:
Nice Dave.........Get the speedie sauce ready....lol! ;)
Thanks, Ron and Ron, I was having a bad year until today. What a hunt it turned out to be. I'm pumped. I decided to take a doe this year if I got the chance. Wasn't expecting a buck to be with her quite yet. If I had seen him it would have been him I would have waited for. He had about a 15 or 16 in. rack :banghead:
:clapper: Way to go Dave. Nice doe
CONGRATULATIONS Dave!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl:
David that's so cool that you took her from the ground . As many times as I've tried to pull that off I've never had any luck, to me that ranks right up there with a huge buck you should be very proud .
Alright David way to go you rock.
So let me see so far that's Jim , Alex,Drew, and you, now Jim C. Bob B and I need one.
I keep telling myself in 30 seconds your whole season can change.
Nice going David. Maybe her boy friend will be around in the morning. Gerald I came close today passed a doe in the morning and huge doe and spike this afternoon begged me to kill them but I let them pass. A little while later a real nice 6 pointer that I think is 2.5 came in I couldn't take it so I decided to kill him. All he had to do was stay on the trail the doe and spike took and it was a 10 yard shot but he turns and comes directly towards me downwind at about 12 yards he hit my sent game over ( for today) :) :) :)
:biglaugh: Dave, I don't think you know what a bad year is hunting.........
Nice going Dave, congratulations.
Nice doe, Dave.
So close Bob , so close.
If I had a dollar for every ALMOST shot I'd be rich.
Congrats on a beautiful doe
 Glad it came together today Dave. My wife and I hunted most of the day and saw just 1 small doe and a four point ; neither offered a shot. Looks like we might be hunting in the snow Sunday. Good luck to all.
Good going Dave! I have decided to take a doe too if she comes into my zone. Last year I passed on 2, waiting for a buck, and never got another good shot. If I ever make it out this season those girls better beware!
Nice job David!!! Thats a great looking Doe! And you have a good buck on the hill too. That will het you out the door in the morning.
:campfire:
Congrats Dave. Smart play by taking your bow. You never know.
Good morning again. Had two yearlings under my stand at 8:00. 15 min. later had a spike come down the hill. I called him in with "The Can", had him dead to rights at 10 yrds. I let them all walk. No sign of the big guy. Have to get out and move a stand for next weekend.I have a new spot on the state land to set up for next weekend.I saw two bucks cross there last year. It's one of those overlooked spots. :bigsmyl: Keep after them guys!!!
Awesome job guys, I almost had it come together. I busted two out from right under my stand and then they came back at 830. The wind swirling and they were down wind so I thought game over. Never winded me ( sent control worked) or I got lucky. But they came in to about 20 yards. She needed a few more steps but that didn't happen she turned and wondered off. Next time!
Scent control certainly does help Matt. I was scent controlled to the max this morning with swirling winds and not one deer spooked from under my stand. The spike horn crossed my path in more than once and never bugged an eye.
way to go David , nice deer
I had a smaller doe on the ground at ten yards this morning but let her walk, she had no idea I was even there
I mow a 3ft wide trail every August through some swampy brush to get to a oak cluster I like to use my climber in. I got a late start this morning and was getting there right at legal sunrise. I stopped in the path and unslung my Lone Wolf and as I was trying to figure which tree I was going in a forkhorn came trotting down the trail towards me. Bow in one hand and climber in the other I stood there as he pulled up to arms length from me. Finally he got a whiff and I could see his eyes roll as he went over backwards and hauled out of there ! Fun wow. Figured I was in the right spot but 4hrs in a tree and no more action. Maybe tonight.
:(
You are Da Man Jim! Congrats on #2
Nice going Jim, hey, how do you get more than two tags for archery season? Just wondering bud! Congrats!
:(
Congrats to all, good to see everyone putting meat in the freezer.
Way to go, Jim!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! (again!) :clapper:
Gotta love those Doe tags!!! Between Tyler & I, we could shoot 8 deer!
(if we could only see them...)
The fact that folks have the ability to shoot 8 deer legally maybe why many of us don't see any!! If a person shot half that amount with bow or gun puts a real dent in the population! :dunno: Just say'n
Probly right, Ron!!!!!
No need to worry about me though.....
I couldn't hit water,if I fell out of a boat!
I'm sworn to secrecy, some fellow stickbow enthusiast has quite a tale to tell.

Thank you for posting the picture. Today has been a real roller coaster ride for me and right now I'm at the bottom. This morning I had a real nice buck in and I thought my shot was good but he must have turned a little and been quartering toward me . The arrow passed through and the deer tucked his tail and bolted downhill towards the creek. I got down and picked up the arrow and noticed almost no blood on the ground, the arrow was covered in blood but did have some intestine matter on it so I decided to give him some time. I gathered all of my stuff and was standing at the base of my treestand when I heard a branch brake so I turned around and this buck was coming right at me. I took my phone out and started taking pictures and he kept coming , at three yards I decided that was close enough and moved so he would see me. He just bounded a few steps and looked at me then snorted and went down the hill. I gave the one I hit four hours and went back and followed running tracks and a little blood down the hill to the creek where he started to walk and I lost blood. I have a friend who is a licensed tracker with dogs and he is coming in the morning to help me look. A couple of people have prayed along with me, we will see what the morning brings.
Sounds like one lung, liver and out guts..stick with it bud...I bet you'll find him!!
Sorry wapiti chaser hope the dogs can lend a paw
Congrats stone knife on another doe

Yep that sounds about right, I hit one a few years ago in one lung exited out low in the gut. The intestines plugged the hole, almost no blood and the buck went about 300 yards and died.
Hey Jim I didn't realize you could use dmp tags during archery season.Guess I should re- read my game laws once in a while. :knothead:
Sounds Like you should be able to find him Bob.I know the feeling, not much fun until you do.
Thanks for all of encouragement I'm just sitting by the wood stove with a cup of coffee waiting for the Deer Search dog watching minutes tick off on the clock . Not sure if it's good or bad but inever heard the coyotes last night.

Sorry for the double post brain isn't working with my hands
Know the feeling-- good luck! For my part I am seeing all kinds of deer this year, and the chasing started Friday AM here with a sighting of a 10-pointer I've not seen before "in these parts". My confidence is poor due to shoulder weakness post surgery but just being out there and seeing it is a wonder.
Good luck Bob. Hope you find him !
:campfire:
Drag him home Bob!
Mr. Brown will tell the story

OH BOY!
Nice buck! That one deservers a double post :)
Awesome! Mr. Brown is hell on those western NY bucks.
Hey, that looks like last year's mount! Where's the part you eat? Just kidding, nice deer.
Tim
Way to go Bob! Can't wait to hear the story.

Sorry I double tapped the mouse :bigsmyl:
I love a story with a happy ending. I hope your not showing the head because the coyotes beat you to the rest..
Ye HA! Way to go Bob. Looks like the one I saw this morning that I couldn't get a good shot at. Give us the details bro. :campfire:
Well the tracker came over at 8 this morning. We discussed the shot and looked at the arrow and hair. We got up to the start of the trail and that wire haired dog put his nose down and went to work on the trail. When we got to the last spot of blood I found yesterday the dog went straight about forty yards then took a hard right crossed the creek and up a cliff that is so steep not to mention thick that you have belly crawl up, at this point the tracker wasn't sure about the trail and started back down the lane which crosses the creek 30 yards further down the creek while I was searching for blood along the creek. In a matter of seconds the tracker yelled I have him ! I thought he had found blood but the dog went back to the creek and found the deer in a big popular tree that fell down. Unfortunately the coyotes found him before we did and really did a number on him. All I could save was the neck meat. I was within 20 feet of the deer when I called the tracker yesterday. I feel like two or three more steps and I would have found him. The tracker said he was surely a 3.5 year old deer and commended my tracking him that far and said I had done the right thing backing out no being certain of the hit. This beautiful animal deserved a better death and I hope he was dead when the coyotes found him. I know I did everything possible and that along with encouragement some fellow gangers have given has eased my mind some. I filled out my tag and will do everything in my power to never feed the coyotes again. Here is to the greatest game animal the whitetail.
Your a good hunter and sportsman Bob, it happens and you did everything right that you should have it just stinks the Yotes got to him first.
He's a nice buck.
OK so that leaves Jim C and myself , come on we just need a chance.
Off to the bow only zone near Albany in the AM. I think I'm changing bows to see if my luck can change. As far as luck.......if I ever had any.....lol!
Ditto on what Gerald said Bob. Iv' lost deer before and never found them....it happens. Congrats on a beautiful animal.
Sorry for your lost meat Bob. He's an awesome buck none the less and as you know it happens to anyone shooting arrows at deer sooner or later.
Bob I know we talked earlier on the phone but bowhunting is not an exact science your odds are more than likely stacked against you when you are trying to kill an animal with a bow . Unfortunately losses do occur its all part of the game nobody wants it to happen but if you shoot at enough animals it eventually will just know that you did everything right. Sometimes success and failure are measured in fractions of an inch just like we talked on the phone that deer could have ducked or jumped the string but without slow motion replay its hard to say. I know the ones that I have lost still haunt me so the best advice I can give you is put it out of your mind for now and keep hunting the does.
Man, best of luck Ron, we can never have enough speedies.LOL Hope you get two or three.Best of luck my friend!!

We do the best we can and the coyotes do too

I would be very happy with one.........
way to keep after him Bob , congrats
Sorry for the lost meat but he's a great buck.
Congrats on a great buck Bob. I think Nashoba said it perfectly. It's always unfortunate when it doesn't end the way it should but it does happen. Glad you got him.
Sorry for the lost meat Bob but you at least know from your trailing so close to him he died in a reasonable time and wasn't lingering somewhere. You at least got the shot off. I botched it tonight on a mature buck and I don't get a lot of chances at those. I had a beauty at 12yds quartering toward me and didn't take the shot sure I would get a wack as he walked past. I was confident he was going to walk past as the wind was perfect and I was 15ft above him. I forgot about the direction I had walked in 45 mins earlier and he hit my tracks and snorted, jumped and trotted for 30yds and then looked back at me. Bucks that make it past their 2nd season around here don't give you breaks ! He was broadside enough I should have shot but noooo I needed him to go another few steps.
Marvin, you made an ethical choice not to shoot while he was quartering to you. Good for you, I think you made the right choice. Like you said these pressured bucks are often edgy and can spook at the drop of a twig. You were waiting for a clean kill and that's commendable. If you had shot him before he spooked, and didn't hit vitals you may have really been sorry. Keep after em bro
X2
It was more like I was cocky than ethical. I was sure I knew what he was going to do. He was almost broadside and I'm confident I could have made that shot. You're right though in that I'd be kicking myself if I had hit him poorly on an iffy angle. Good luck.
>>>>---------> MISSED ONE.....! :dunno:
Tell us about it Ron.
Been there, done that!
Anybody who says he never misses or never loses a deer either doesn't hunt much, doesn't kill much, or has terrible memory. I saw 3 does and 3 fawns walking in this morning but they were on the downwind side of the field and made me. About 1030 a buck came up the edge behind me but must have got a whiff with the swirling wind and detoured about 60yds short of me. This is starting to get to be like a job !
Don't sweat it Ron,it will all come together.
I told the tale on another post, Ghillie coats and button buck......
The bucks were moving pretty good yesterday at about 2:30- 3:00 I could see a large bodied deer walking through the cut been field behind my house. By the time I was able to get my bino's he had covered half the field he turned out to be a heavy framed tall tined ten pointer. He walked right to the edge of my property line and then proceeded to walk by my beagles kennel. He then walked about 30 yards from my house and down into my neighbors yard . Seeing as I no longer have a buck tag I called my friend who was hunting across the street to let him know that he crossed onto his property with another buck . My friends son shot the 10 pointer about 4:30 he turned out to be a 3 1/2 year old and about 135 inches.

At least you got a shot and no harm no foul.
Just a long walk in the woods today in the lower part of the state..Rockland County..no sign to speak of and so warm I was out there in short sleeves. Acorns still dropping and are absolutely everywhere. Covered some serious ground looking for scrapes but came up empty. Very unusual, I've always seen deer in this area, year after year but this season has been a complete bust so far.
Spent 10 hours today on state land and saw 2 small bucks and 5 does. they were all feeding. no rut activity. My buddy was able to shoot one of the small bucks as we hid behind an old dead oak 18 yards away. Unfortunately he used wheels. It's still alot of fun to see someone else get that excited.
Wow!
Heres my buck from 11/02. All done and in the freezer. May hunt doe and squirrels tomorrow. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_2392.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_2392.jpg.html)
Congrats again Izzy, cool looking buck, and that was an awesome hunt and shot.
You go Izzy! Good job.
Congrats izzy and mr bob
Congrats Izzy!
Congratulations Izzy
Way to go Izzy. :clapper:
Good job Izzy .
May life's simplest things bring you the greatest pleasures !!!
Congrats Izzy!
Congrats Izzy, Bob and David.
Been away in WI have few more hunts with friends before I fly home. Lots of BIG bucks in close proximity but hard to pull them off hot Does.
Congrats Izzy, and all the other NY folks who have been putting the meat on the table.
Way to go Izzy!
David
Short sit this afternoon, saw a few turkeys and some bushy tails.......saw a rub, maybe a week old, but it was a real good one. The wind was just going in every direction so I backed out of the spot.
Nice job Izzy.
Good Luck, Charlie!!!! Hope ya connect,Brother!!!
Congrats Izzy, nice buck!
Congrats!
congrats Izzy
Good luck Charlie
I just got in with my wife after 6/12hrs with a lantern on a blood trail. Trying to follow a hit buck across a beet field isn't fun ; everything is red. Followed him into a thicket and lost the trail at midnight. Good blood with bubbles in the beginning but was drops 350 yds later. One lung maybe and a touch high ? Think of me in the morning when I go back. Long night tonight.
He's probably yards from where you turned back. Good blood and 350 yards? I think you'll get him. Good luck Marvin, Ill be crossing my fingers for you. If you have access to a dog of any kind bring it, they all have a better nose than we do.
Hope you find him before the rain comes. Good luck.
Congrats Izzy
That sucks but like izzy said the buck is probably pretty close to where you left the blood trail.
One of my first deer I pulled the don't wait and push him along trick, I followed him forever. Last 100 yards no blood but he was on a bee line with no turns so I just extended it and found him. Good luck today, let us know how you make out.
Good luck Marvin. It sounds like you will get him.
Well today is the last day for me! Of work that is I have the next week off to try to put some meat in the freezer. It is looking like we will have good weather next week. Let hope the deer cooperate! I will be checking in and letting you know how things are going.
Hope you find him too.
I shot over the back of a beautiful buck yesterday afternoon.
Not a good feeling!
Good luck Matt. I'll be in the pine bush today, working unfortunately but will be hunting close to home tomorrow afternoon. We might even get snow this weekend.
My response was lost to cyberspace so I'll try again. Lost my deer after 12hrs trailing and over 900yds per GPS map. He never laid down and despite good early blood he quit bleeding for last 300yds along a wheat field. I got 2 more drops after he jumped a ditch to cross a road. Lost track shortly after that. I'm thinking shoulder hit and hopefully he'll recover. I feel awful about the poor hit on a great buck. 18yd shot at a broadside deer I should have done better. He was a biggie and I sure hope he makes it. I don't mind a clean kill but I get sick at a wounding.
Marvin way to follow up on a deer that you hit. We all have been there, not good but it is what it is.
Bummer Marvin. I applaud your follow up on this deer.
Good Luck Matt. You should have a great wek ahead of you.
Marvin I feel your pain. When it bleeds like crazy then continues to taper off to nothing and he never beds that doesn't sound like a fatal wound .
Marvin, sorry on Tuesday at 7:10 am I had a 15 yd shot at nice 6pt. He was movin but slow. I shot hit him about 8 inches from tail. I could not believe my incompetence! Arrow fell out ten yes after hit. I watched him stop about 45 yds away wondering what happened. I told myself I would not leave stand for at least an hour.
In that hour I thought of taking up golf, selling my bow incl the tip on order. I actually considered putting the safety harness around my neck and jumping off the tree stand. I said a prayer, then a high mass etc. after giving myself a real beating I said I owed it to the critter to spend all day looking even though ass shots have little chance of recovery..
Got down and noticed blood immediately, went to arrow and totally intact (cedar w Simmons land shark). It had deep dark blood half way up. Really surprised me arrow came out so quickly. I decided since he was slightly quartering away I may have got the artery. So do not push him. Had to drive a friend to vote so I decided to do that after I drive down dirt road I felt he probably crossed. I figured truck would not spook him out of bed, not 50 yes down road he was laying there with head up looking other way. I was only 15 yes away and stopped truck, he jumped up and I could not believe the damage, blood and he started to go into woods but was really hurting. I put truck in reverse and came back with friend after we voted, probably two hrs.
When I returned I tracked blood trail that Ray Charles could have seen. He was only 20 yes from road and had expired.
I did not deserve this buck but I was pleased the coyotes wouldn't get him. I am ashamed by my poor shot and I think I peeked when I released. I only tell this story to relate that strange things happen even when we mess up. I will work hard during winter bow league to improve my skills.
Thanks for the kind words. Right now my whole body aches from the stress. After 40+ years of deer hunting you'd think I cope better. Went out to fling a few at the target today and could barely hit anything at even 20yds. Those who know me know that's not my norm. I gotta get my head right (even a simple mind is a terrible thing )if I'm going to put it together this week. FMSCAN the TEXAS HEART SHOT is a meat wrecker and nothing to hope for but thankfully is often very lethal. Good luck to all.
You fellas hang in there. It sucks real bad to wound them and lose them but if you aren't doing it intentionally you gotta pick yourself up and maybe shoot a little to get your mojo back. I hate to say it but don't rush yourself back into the woods if you aint feeling it. Take your time and get right, the deer will be there when your ready.
That stinks Marv, but I do think if he was not dead in 900 yrds I'm pretty sure he won't die from the arrow wound.
I know your a good shot, and like everybody says bowhunting is a game of inches.
Sorry to hear of your loss Marvin. Luckily and I mean luckily it hasn't happened to me this year. The hit I made on the doe I shot this year could have and should have been a disaster! She tried to dodge the arrow, Like I said, I got lucky. It happens to all of us, and I'm no exception. I lost a nice buck I hit from the ground about 6 years ago. Everything felt right upon release. I just shot a couple inches too far forward. Don't beat yourself up to bad, your an excellent shot and I hope you can enjoy the rest of your season.
A miss is rare for you Philip..
You'll whack him next time out I'm sure
Sat for 3+ hours this AM, saw 4 deer all way to far away. Nice cool morning.....I still see no rut activity..... :dunno:
Walked up on this little guy yesterday. Haven't seen much activity here either Ron W. Great weather to still hunt though.

How are you John. Hope all is well.
When thinking back on the encounter, I should have waited a bit longer and watch him. I saw a window for a shot as he turned offering a quartering away target. I figure 25-28 yards, a bit out of my comfort zone but it felt right or I would not have loosed the arrow. My trusty Silvertip anxious to perform and did flawlessly.
My arrow flew true but just over his back.
I rushed and didn't pick a spot. I know better and got caught up in the excitement which most traditional bow hunters can relate.
Off to the woods I go, wish me luck and good luck to you and all our NY friends.
.....Philip
Congrats to all!! Due to moving into a new house and working a new job with no vaca time yet, today was my first morning out this year. Had deer moving all around me this morning. I couldn't put a crown on any of them, all does and one for horn. Had this one come right under my tree stand. Had to wait till she walked about 8 yards out to shoot. I was hunting with a Tall Tines that I acquired this past summer.

Nice shooting Sean. Congrats.
Awesome buddy, she looks like a cow.
CONGRATULATIONS, Brother!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Give me a call,if ya get a chance...
Nice deer Sean. Congratulations
Sean, good job. Make good with the time you have.
Shick
That must have been a nice feeling after so much of the season at work. I know how it feels. Nice Doe, congrats.
Way to go Sean
Congrats Sean!!
Good for you.....first time out, unreal!! :dunno:
Congratulations!
:clapper:
I can't find a single deer turd in the woods...
My buddy Sean goes and "steps in it" his 1st day out!!!
Whodathunkit??? :bigsmyl:
Way to go Sean!! Nice job, and great shot!!!!
David
congrats Sean
Well done Sean!
Keep at it Phillip.
I'm headed to the pine bush in the morning.
Saw a lot of deer while I was working today but when I hunted the area after work there was nothing moving. Only saw a handful of squirrels even and usually the ground is crawling with them.
Back to work in the am, good luck to all you fellas getting out and dress warm.
Thanks guys, doing a family day today. Haven't had one of those in a while either. Ill be sitting all day next week!! Woodhucker, I'll give you a call this afternoon. Good Luck guys, Its going to open up real soon!!
Sat from daybreak til about 11am and only saw 1 deer, but it was a nice buck walking across a hill about 80 yards out. Tried enticing him with to come closer with some bleats but he wanted no part of it.
Congratulations Sean.
Yep, the big one got away. Had the biggest racked buck Iv' ever seen on my hill come within 25 yds of my stand. By the time he got broad side, he was partially hidden by a hemlock branch. He was only a couple steps from heavier cover so I took my best shot. I don't know if I hit the branch or just plan missed, but he walk away unscathed. He had 5 points on one side and at least 4 on the other. Looked to be about 18 in. wide. That's a good buck for my hill. Oh well, maybe I'll see him during that other season. Coming down to the wire now. Only one more day to hunt with the Cheetah.Good luck everyone.
Trying to get a doe for the freezer so it's only natural three bucks came by today and no does.
Oh ya the largest went by twice..
Oooh David! Them big ones have a force field around them it seems...
:deadhorse:
I know what you mean Bob, the only bucks I can shoot are the two spikes that keep coming under my stand. If I see one of them again their history! If you want a big buck all you see is small ones. If you want a doe, all you see is bucks. Go figure. :biglaugh:
Can't complain, at least we're seeing deer! Thank the lord!
Well I guess I better get out there and see what I can do the rest of the day.
I was going to say Dave.....I hope your not complaining about seeing deer and getting shots :saywhat: :saywhat:
Sat in the Pine bush today. 1st spot had cars parked there so I went to an old favorite.
I eased into the backside of a bedding area with good trails running every which way. Watched a buck chase a doe around for 15 minutes before they went over the hill. I tried to woo him and call to her. It seems they were just headed somewhere more private I guess?
Same here Charlie
Amazing rutting action by me.
5 different rack bucks seen in 5 days.
Oh yea,
I missed one of them !
The chase phase is full on. We had to walk out with a buck chasing a doe around in the dark tonight. I bet the breeding will start soon . Only does around are getting chased and don't stop running .
I hope you guys are right, going for the day on Monday.......would like to see some action. This will be my 15th outing this year......fingers crossed!
I'm Ok Philip..How are Josephine and the kids?..It's been a slow season so far. Rut wasn't going yet last week over at Sterling Forest. I've been out a few times with no action. I'll be out this Tuesday and hopefully it's starting to go otherwise I'll have to get out there after the blaze orange crowd hits the woods and Sterling deer become even harder to find...Good Luck the rest of the way
I got bit by a deer tick yesterday and it doesn't look good. going to the Dr. today. But first I need to head out and see whats going on in the woods. I pray that this tick isn't what it looks like.

Good luck pal, good to see a Dr.. The ticks were light around here over the summer thankfully but now we're infested gain.
Do you have a bulls eye?
I took a quick walk yesterday morning out back before church. It has been a little cooler here the last few days but the ticks are still terrible. This was one of probably 20 that I had on my coveralls.
And this was walking around the field, if you want to really be a "tick magnet' just walk through the field. Good luck to you guys!
Good Hunting,
Craig

I hate Ticks. Michael, I am praying for the best news at the doc.
No deer sightings this morning. I got a Dr appt. for 1 o'clock. Messes up my my hunting but better safe than sorry. No bulls eye yet. Looks like a big pimple so far.
Ended up taking another spike for the season. No time left with the bow. I was happy to get him. Ten yrd. shot from my hemlock stand. As luck would have it, he ran up hill and died beside my access road. No dragging involved. Hopefully I'll see the big one during the next season! Pics later as the stepdaughter has the camera for a school project. Good luck my friends!
:clapper: Congrats David. Stuck at work but hoping to get out tomorrow for my last try at a big gobbler or doe.
Nice David !
Way to go Dave :jumper:

Nice job David, I know first hand how tough the hunting has been this year good decesion to take the spike.
The rutting action around here has really turned on, saw 2 bucks on the way to church yesterday and have been getting reports of much more buck sightings and chasing going on.
This last week should be good. I even mouth grunted in a buck on Sat but no shot taken.
Yesterday was a fine example of how a couple of hot does can fill and then empty an area with bucks. In the small woods we hunted Sunday morning we saw 7 different bucks and my wife had four chasing each other and a small doe around her stand for several minutes. She got so frustrated at them not stopping for her bleats at one point she yelled "STOP" at an 8pt to no avail. I was at the other end of the woods but watched several bucks and 2 does go by. No shots taken ! We quit at 1pm then went back out 2pm until dark but didn't see but 1 deer. Same woods this morning no action.
Congratulations David.
Nice job David... good year for you so far! :bigsmyl:
Long day today......just a stop for lunch.....never saw a thing.......discouraged to say the least.
Nice David I would rather take a spike with a bow than a ten point with something that goes boom
sweet David , congrats
Congrats David. Deer were out this PM by the hundreds, unfortunately I was viewing them from a car window from the NYS thruway.
Congratulations David!
Bad shots happen. More often than one would think.
Especially on live,moving, reactionary animals.
I'm glad you were able to recover your buck!
Congratulations!
What time are you guys seeing most movement?I,m having goodluck seeing deer around 9am - noon.Congrats on the harvests guys.............
What movement....... :dunno:
I'm disgustipated. I have yet to see a deer or deer movement with a bow in my hand and I'm of of bow season.
My neighbor (a compound shooter but otherwise a nice guy) is retired and has probably put in 40 hours of bowhunting and has only seen coyotes. Looks like a bad year hereabouts.
Have seen a few after dark in my headlights along the road so I know they exist.
I saw more deer this season than ever, we had a high concentration of acorn this year and I hunted around that food source. I keep stand positioned in different areas and on different food sources because they vary from season to season and if I get a year that I'm not seeing deer I hunt someplace else where the deer are.
I had one of my best and worst days hunting today. I saw 9 different bucks, missed one at 20 yards. But then I hit a big 11 point at 15 yards and it seems to have been too far forward and high. He stopped bleeding after 250 yards and I jumped him after 400 yards. He acted as though nothing had happened. Going back tomorrow to make sure he's not laying there but I think he's fine. This is not my year.
Wow... That's some day though!
I had 2 doe come in to 10 yards and moving closer on my left. Would have passed me at 5 yards. Perfect scenario except that when the first one hit where I put down some estrous urine they immediately about faced. :banghead:
I'm done using any kind of scent. I've always had better luck without them and I can't say they have ever actually worked for me.
Scott, I have seen that happen myself with doe.
I took a big six point on the 5th in the evening and he was following a doe. I had seen him that morning heading north and then going south looking for does I guess. I plan to write up the hunt when I get a chance.

Been seeing good movement except for the last couple of days. I'm at work today but have tomorrow and Friday off so hopefully it picks up by me. This weekend hopefully a bunch of the compound shooters head upstate to hunt with the gun since it has been pretty crowded.
Nice buck Mint
Nice Mint, Catskills buck??? Congrats!!!
I haven't seen hardly any deer this bow season. I was washing dishes the other day, complaining to my wife about it. I look up and there's a buck walking thru the backyard. Go figure .
Now two days till gun season and the weather is getting right.
Well I had a rocky week. This weekend I finally started seeing deer move. Not just one deer a day! I had a nice buck come in on sunday and when I took the shot I ended up hitting my tree stand seat.
So on to Monday and I was just hunting the afternoon. About 330 I hear crashing behind me. I see a doe and a button buck running through. They stop right at my stand 15 yards out. The doe finally steps out and I have a shot. As I am pulling back the button spooks at my movement and they both jump. The doe only took one leap then stopped, she provided me with a clean quartering away shot. I drew and let the string go.
Congrats Mint!
Congrats to all of you that have taken deer at the tail end of the season. I've been trying to connect with a doe before the season ends but they just don't want to cooperate with my plan. Today I had a 3 point walk about 10 feet from the base of my tree. The winter season finally caught up to the building trades so I got laid off on Monday at least now I can devote some time to the last 2 days of the season ( I'm trying to look at it as the glass is half full and not half empty).
Nice one Mint, congrats.
The instant I saw the arrow in flight I knew I was in trouble!! The arrow was flying to far left and there was no steering wheel to turn it right in flight. I just had to watch it zip pass her and her run off and laugh at me. I just sat down in disgust. I had a 12-15 yard perfect quartering away shot and I blew it!
I put another arrow on the string and sat for the remainder of the night thinking it was over and I had tomorrow to get it done. Right about 4 ish I heard some shuffling behind me again and here comes a deer. Nose to the ground almost on a full trot, he was dogging the does trail step for step. It wasn't till he got to the spot where the doe spooked (I shot)did he stop and seemed to know something was wrong. He stood there looking around and seemed to pick me out of the tree. He took two or three steps forward and I had a shot so I pulled back and he spooked, jumping 2-3 leaps and stopping. He stopped quartering away at about 20 yards. I had about a 6-10 hole to shoot through and took the shot. THe arrow flew true this time meeting his chest. He took off out of there at a full run with my arrow sticking out of him. As he got out of site I heard him run another 10 second and then just stop no crash no rusting. I figured he was standing there but I never heard him take off. I waited until dark to get down and look for blood. Nothing! I couldn't find a drop anywhere. I just started in the direction on which he ran and in 70 yards there he was. I retraced the blood back and there was blood only the last 20 yards.
I am shooting a Simmons land shark and this blew me away specially after looking at the hole going in. The hole measured 2 3/4 wide. There musta been no blood because the arrow stayed in. I took out the one whole lung and clipped the the artery in the neck and the arrow stopped at the breast bone.

Nice shooting Matt
congrats Jeff and Matt
Awesome Matt nice buck. If you drive that dark gray Silverado Ive got a pic for you that I think you'll dig. :readit:
Good job Matt and Jeff. Good shooting guys.
Way to go Matt!! :clapper:
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_20141019_081246611.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_20141019_081246611.jpg.html) Matt, I think this be your buck! I could be wrong but if 2+2 is 4 I think its him. Super cool if it is. I took this pic on 10/19.
Way to go Matt and Jeff, congrats on the nice bucks.
Here's what's left of my buck, I had to get him cut up due to the warm weather. I took my doe to the processors, but wanted some fresh meat, so this guy got the home job.....yummmmmmm!
(http://i1324.photobucket.com/albums/u615/dbb24/GEDC0057_zps85b89d2f.jpg) (http://s1324.photobucket.com/user/dbb24/media/GEDC0057_zps85b89d2f.jpg.html)
He could be considered a four point I guess, but a spike to me. Shot him with my 60" Kota Nomad and a 160 grn Grizzly with a 75 grn woodie weight for a total arrow weight of 600 grn. It didn't penetrate any better than my 480 grn. 125 grn. two blade zwicky out of my 48 lb. Cheetah.
Nice job guys. The clock is ticking now , I always dislike the last day of bow season. No matter how much time I put in the woods it flys by and the older I get the faster is seems to go by.
Alex, stick with it bro, temps are going to get the deer moving the rest of the week. Hard on them to move when it gets much above 35 to 40 deg. with their winter coats. Get out tomorrow morning if you can! Good luck everybody. I'm really looking forward to this weekend. :bigsmyl:
Congratulations!
I Dont see the deer in the pic. I am looking on my phone so I might be missing him.
Congrats to all the NYers who scored this year, I'll be sticking it out til the bitter end. As hard as it was for me to see deer this year I know it can all change in 10 seconds. Tonight I only hunted for 30 min. but at least I got out.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Good luck this weekend Chuck. Best of luck to you too Gerald. The rest of the bow season is going to be hot, and I don't mean weather wise. Keep at it with gusto my friend.
Congrats Jeff nice 6 Point.
Congrats Matt, Never saw you with a beard ha ha. hardly recognized ya. lol way to get it done on public land.
Well Done David
I am cheating on Saturday but then its back to bow in hand the rest of the season in the pine bush.
I enjoyed following along on your guys post. Sounds like everyone had a great time which is what it is all about in my book. Good job all of you!
Good Hunting,
Craig
Going to do 10-2 just for a change, I don't see them in the AM or the PM so I'll try in the middle!
Congrats Matt! Ron, Go break in the new Stalker.
Haven,t seen anything in 2days...........Its like they left the area.Have,nt even seen them at nite spoting them. Was seeing them all last week but no seeum this week.
Took my new bow out for a sit, but as normal nothing but a few tree rodents.
Went out this morning and saw 4 bucks and 8 does. Missed a small 8 point (again) at 25 yards and had a big 8 point run past me at 15 yards at full throttle with a coyote 20 feet behind him. Looks like this may have been my last hunt for this bow season. Congratulations to all those who put meat in the freezer. And good luck to those who continue to try to get it done amidst all the "Boom-Sticks".
It aint over yet fellas. Keep the spirit and lets make more meat.
I'll be going for 2 more short hunts for the last "hurrah " on Fri, I keep telling myself I have just as good if not better chance as all the rest of the season.
I'm going to stick it out in the bow only zone, so it ain't over yet!
I only have one Cheater day scheduled, they its bow only the rest of the season starting promptly Sunday Morning.
Had some fast action this morning,Had a 4pt. chase a doe right next to my ground blind. They came from behind so it was a surprise. No shots tried grunting to them but they kept on running. Also saw 2 other ones awhile later in a different spot. Was fun, maybe this afternoon will be better.
Going until the end ! Shot another flathead this morning with my wife's consigned over doe tag. This year I can't get it right on anything with horns ( I'll amaze you guys at the rabbit hunt with my sad tales of buck failures !
) but I'm deadly on does. So cold I took my lightest, 40yr old recurve , but it got it done at 13yds with a Wensel head. 70 yd dash and done. I got 4 more hours so back out I go !
Congrats Marvin nothing wrong with your shooting I've seen you hit those rabbits. Lets all try to get together earlier than we did last year the dogs are itching to get out.
Headed out for the " last dance "
No such thing as cheating if you are hunting. Get out there I saw some big boys srutng there stuff today on my travels
Get er done guys :bigsmyl:
congrats again Marvin
Well the " fat lady" has sang, again no deer seen tonight.
And not one shot taken this year, I didn't even have a chance. Again congrats to all the guys who got it done this year and some of you several times. Thanks men for sharing your season with me , with all the ups and downs.
Congrats marvin
I went out this morning and witnessed the most beautiful sunrise ,a dusting of snow with the sun coming up like a fire ball over the swamp that had completely frozen over last night .A little while latter the snow started and a button buck came in and ate green leaves off the low bushes . Bow season seemed to fly by even though I hunted every chance I had . I'm already thinking about next year......
I thought I was going to finish big when at 3pm a high racked, big chested 8pt closed to 25yards of my stand but he wouldn't give me the 3 steps I needed to get him clear of small limbs. He turned and walked away after a couple of minutes and I tried the grunt tube then but he just kicked into high gear out of there after a couple of grunts. Smokepole tomorrow and I'm looking forward again Nashoba to bunnies. Good luck and be safe all.
Might be a good idea for anyone bowhunting tomorrow to wear orange. Good Luck
Congrats Marvin.
Nice job to all who got one so far. I had a couple close calls myself this week. Not see much for bucks but I have a doe tag I might try to fill with my bow.
Hey Chuck, check your PM's and email. Trying to get my phone number to you.
Congrats to all who scored..I didn't see so much as a tail during the bow season. I hope to be out on Tuesday with the bow but I know the are I hunt was probably a shooting gallery today so the later season has never been productive there.
Deer were active early today.
Tomorrow, a south wind and a good Funnel, Hopefully my arrow will find its mark.
Had a very interesting morning. Close encounter with a very respectable 8 point this morning. Twenty five yards was as close as he would come in. A little out of reach for me on live animals. Three does as well . I couldn't remember if I left my steps in last year so I opted for the pac seat. This buck freshened up a scrape fifteen yards from the tree I should have been in. Nice clear morning. Good luck brothers
Had my 18th sit this afternoon......not a living thing was seen......no birds, squirrels or anything. My enthusiasm is fast approaching rock bottom.........
Yesterday Morning I had a deer coming in at 7:30. It bedded down in some thick brush up hill from me. Then at 10:00 it got up and was walking away. I opted to pass up the shot ;) because the deer was 60 yards and in the brush. Heck I couldn't even identify it. next year I will practice that shot more. :dunno: lol
It was however a beautiful morning. I was happy to be out with bow in hand.
Ron, you're not alone. My last 6 times out I have not seen anything other than birds.
Out last night nothing moving. It was a strange weekend from everybody I talked to nothing was really moving anywhere. I did see a doe and fawn from my dining room table yesterday morn so I didn't go skunked!!!
Anyone sit in today's garbage weather?
im going out tomorrow afternoon, skipping out of work. saw a nice 6 pt on the trailcam
i sat for the gun opener saw 4 does, heard over 100 shots by 8am.
back to the longbow for now but it will be cold.
Sat in my ground blind this morning but only for a couple of hours. Temps in the 20's with 25mph swirling wind. Nothing moving.
Im going for a walk in the Pinebush tomorrow to see if I can line up on a nanny. Hope the ticks don't take me down. Good luck to you fellas still hunting, good things can still happen even with the guns going off.
Izzy.... Knock on wood but I have been in the pine bush 2 dozen times this year from July on and have yet to bring any hitchhiker home. I spray my clothes with Permythren and it seems to have worked so far.
Good luck in the PB. I have been seeing deer there just nothing I have had a shot at.
I will however get a look at a new spot this weekend. I have been scouring over Google maps and have seen deer head toward an area just have to step in there for a closer look. I think it can be a winner.
Come on Saturday morning. :campfire:
I may pass through there Saturday Charlie but Ill be working. It s my usual morning routine when Im assigned to that zone. Id take a day off if you could kill bucks with the dmp's . Good luck hunting, theres been a few killed there this year.
Izzy, if you see a maroon CRV, that's what my wife and I are sharing these days.
Fred, I'm pulling for you. I know 1st hand how it feels to lose property and have to start over. Usually, in years past you would have 2 or 3 deer by now. I think of you every time I pull into our sister facility in Carmel. It has deer in the driveway most every time. They are off Seminary hill rd.
Glen, It seems its always the way for you, You kill a buck and then only see bucks the rest of the season. Good luck!
I can still shoot a buck with my regular season tag. Used my archery either sex tag for the 11-11-14 deer. Hopefully this weekend.
Tyler & I, Are off to Deer Camp for the weekend!!!!! :bigsmyl:
good luck Chuck
Good Luck Chuck..
I know you guys will have a great time again this weekend.
The morning has been long anticipated. It has been a long week and i plan to be in the Pine Bush early, then explore late morning an area 800 yards east of my secluded bowl that I love to hunt so much.
Drew, How have you been?
Charlie : I'm good , looking forward to hearing your adventure from Wisconsin. I put a doe in the freezer yesterday . How have you been ?
Chuck hope you do well :archer:
What an incredible Morning.
On Public Land, seen 11 Deer and a coyote. Had 3 does and an 8 point at 12 yards. I guess I didn't blend in as well as I thought as the biggest doe looked immediately at me as she stepped into my clearing and was suspicious. She quickly turned and walked out with one fawn in tow. The other fawn skirted my position, I thought I was going to get a shot.
10 minutes later I saw the buck, I gave him a few soft grunts and he came straight at me from the bedding area. He stopped at 12 yards and looked straight at me. I wasn't even considering a frontal shot. I tried to draw on the buck as he was turning to leave but he turned to quickly and walked straight away.
When I first arrived, I was a bit disappointed because I could see they had Mowed at least 80 acres of brush from these woods. All that remained was the pine trees that make up this pine bush. I was relieved when I found they had left my spot alone for now. I think this is what contributed to such a great morning.
I'm still on cloud 9 from such a great morning.
That sounds like a great morning to me Charlie. A season can change in a minute. Saw a doe at seventy yards or so. A bit nippy this morning.
Another good Morning. I took a good bud in with me as we have been trying t catch up and share a hunt all year. we were planning on a piece by his house but some hoodlum kids were in there making a huge ruckus last night.
I had a doe at first light 20 yards but since I was in a new tree I wasn't 100 percent there wasn't any branches in the way. as it turned out... there wasn't but I don't regret playing it safe. A judo point few to the spot when I was leaving which confirmed I could have done my part. To be honest It was a little dark and I couldn't even tell if it was a doe. No regrets doing the right thing.
I saw 1 more doe, a buck harassing her and another deer at 10:00 slinking through 20 yards behind me but lost it.
My bud, was only 50 yards from me, we could see each other clearly but never saw the same deer. He almost had a shot at a big spike but it winded him before it hit the hole he wanted to shoot through.
The area we are in is so thick, the deer have tunnels but they move freely throughout the day. It sometimes hard to get a shot but I am having action, something I haven't had much of besides my WI trip.
Glen, Hope you fill that other buck Tag. Once deer season is over and Tinkering season begins, I will be playing with a beautiful Osage bow. I hope to slink some arrows towards some bunnies. I found a new spot within walking distance from my house that has a decent population. at least it did this summer.
Charlie, Glad to hear that you are getting some woods action. I took this weekend off from hunting and my wife and I flew down to Nashville with some friends for some R&R. Planning on hitting the woods hard for the rest of the season. Next time you're headed down to my neck of the woods give me a shout.
Will do Fred. Usually when I am there its for work and side trips are not warranted as I have patients with me.
When my boss gets me stranded down there I'll send you a text lol.
I find it hard to believe we are the only ones still bowhunting.
Lets here it NY'ers. any action?
Was out Saturday and Sunday Charlie. I saw one lone doe all weekend, but I will go till the final bell rings. Plenty of hunting left.
I'll be heading out this week with my new Howard Hill. I have to wait for the late bow season to hunt a spot that is loaded with deer :bigsmyl:
Great news Guys, I knew I could conjure up some more reports. lol
Glen have you been to the ridge top spot where you had the deer close by last season? I think it was either in Rockland or Westchester county. I remember you pictures. Good stuff..
Jim, does this mean your Bob Lee will be up for sale? :p
Sat for three hours this A.M. nothing moving except the trees. The wind came up fast, and I exited. Very warm morning.

Nope :readit:
LOL Jim, I didn't have to ask, I already knew that answer. ha!
Ken, did you sit near Vadney Farm?
I hope to get out Thursday Morning. It would be neat to have moderate temps and a bunch of snow. I think they could be searching out their Thanksgiving Acorn Turkey dinners!
Predictions say the heaviest travel day of the season. Lets hope they are right. ;) ;)
Yeah, Charlie, that's where I was. I have seen deer there this year, but nothing today. I pulled my tree stand, so I don't have to carry it back through the snow.
Good luck Thursday.
Never made it out Thursday due to Family stuff but,
I will be in the snow tomorrow morning. Wins should be good, I can wait!
My hunting buddy Mike Manassa broke in his new Big Jim's recurve on this nice 3 point buck.

Nice one........
Thanks Rick. Someday I'll get photobucket figured out.
Congrats Mike!
Thanks guys. New Desert BigHorn performed well.
Mike, congratulations sir.
It was a beautiful and cold Morning. I thought the deer would be moving but I never seem to do well in the snow.
I wish I could sit all day.
Congrats  to all
congrats
Congrats mike!
Way to go Mike
Nice getting it done late season.
I was out yesterday saw two way off. Gotta love the snow. Nothing else though quite but good to be out.
I'm getting the Bunny hunting itch :readit:
Me to Jim I was wondering how Albert was doing?
All three hounds are good and ready to go
I was out all weekend. Never saw a deer in the woods. I did see some bunnies though :readit:
Was out this morning. Got soaked. Saw 8 deer. Nothing in range. Finally at 9:30 water was running down my back, I called it quits and snuck out as the last 3 deer were almost out of sight walking away.
Charlie, You're a better man than I. I hate hunting in the rain!!
Me too Fred but I hate sitting at home wishing I was hunting even more.
With my wife and I sharing a car, the time I get to hunt is limited, so I take every chance I get. I wanted a close up shot today but didn't get it so I let the deer walk.
Tomorrow morning looks like it will be a beautiful one for the woods. That's where I intend to be.
Guys- new member to the site and from Buffalo. Been thinking long and hard about giving up the wheel bow and trying the traditional side. This thread is making the decision that much easier. Best of luck in the late season - Bob
Welcome Bob, Welcome to the site. Spent quite a bit of time in Western NY, My son went to Buff State, and I've done a lot of living history events at Old Ft. Niagara. If you're proficient with the stick and string, there's no reason to keep the wheels on!!
Welcome Bob! Western NY is a great place to hunt unless you are shoveling 8 feet of snow.
Once you make the leap, one day you will ask yourself why you waited so long.
Sure I don't kill many deer, but I enjoy my hunts wayyyyyy more. Plus Now I have an excuse to shoot year round.
I sat in the Pine Bush this morning.
Maybe some of you can relate...
Last night the forecast said low 20's so an extra wool shirt and Vest was packed (glad I did)
Got to the woods. Temps were in low 30's. I contemplated leaving extra gear at car but quickly became lazy deciding to keep it in the pack.
After quickly and quietly arrived at my spot and Noticing fresh tracks Everywhere, I couldnt help but think this is going to be a great Morning!
The tree I climb has a lot of little knobs which makes climbing a chore but I manage to get up without making any clanking noises. The tree I really wanted to go to is only 80 yards from me but the wind wouldn't have it. This is the tree that showed all this mornings action.
As I get settled, I take my Jacket and hang it on a limb. I think to myself, what if the limb breaks, that would stink... So a quick Test for dead limb sturdiness and I promptly hang the jacket.... As I turned around a strong North wind gust sends my jacket to the ground. Didn't think about wind taking the jacket to the earth. :readit:
I am saddened our season ends so soon. I love this stuff.
Charlie were you hunting public land that only allows bow hunters now? You did well and I was surprised cuz by now all the Dumb deer are dead and the others are only active at night. I would assume that you were hunting an area not pressured by all the gun guys...

Frank, the Albany Pine Bush is bow only. I wish the state had more areas bow only because it is truly a privilege and treat to be able to see deer on natural movements after regular season opens.
This Morning was my last sit. I saw 3 does but couldn't get a shot.
I had a great deer season. I saw a lot of deer, passed up some earlier and had a few almost opportunities. I wish I could keep deer hunting but the season is just too darn quick.
I have keyed in on a few rabbit hides already. Like every year, I save 2 rabbits saved for a Recipe to get the season off right. They are marinating now and I have chosen to make Hasenpfeffer this week.
Lets see. I should bring red wine for Hasenpfeffer.
Tuesday is the last dance...... If all goes well I'm going to give it one more try in the morning. Not sure what to expect but we shall see. Headed to the bow only zone again and can only hope for a bit of luck..........
I'll be out tommorrow afternoon . On Saturday and Sunday afternoon I saw a group of six does just not in range. Maybe just maybe tommorrow...
The end is bittersweet.......saw 3 deer walking in 30 minutes before shooting time. The after sitting till 9 am I see deer moving in the distance. Slowly they work towards me and at 9:15 a shot presents it's self on a small doe. 12-15 yards broadside I take the shot.....Looks to be behind the shoulder but a bit high. I wait 20 minutes and go look for blood. Find it right off. I wait 10 more minutes and start on the trail. I have good blood, don't even have to bend over to follow. At 80 yards I find my 2016 XX75 with 7" missing from the front.
:campfire:
And? :dunno:
Rick
Now the blood is starting to be not as frequent but still easy to follow. Then the worse thing happens, she turns and goes on to private land that I can't go on. The good news is I just got a call that I now have permission to go look for her in the morning. I hope I can find her.....
Good Luck Ron.
Best wishes Ron. Stay positive.
hope you find her Ron
Ron,
Did you see bubbles in the blood? The best tomorrow and may God be riding on your shoulder. You more than deserve it.
Rick
No I did not see bubbles.......which concerns me a bit. Blood was vivid red and lots of it for the first 125 yards.
Ron, hope you find her!!
Thoughts, prayers and a bucket of hope are with you, Ron.
Be dilligent and lucky as well.
Thanks for the positive thoughts.....I have a friend going with me, 2 sets of eyes can't hurt. Going first thing in the morning.....
Good luck in the morning.
Maybe see if deer search can come out. If the deer is dead a dog will find it
Oh how I hope you find her Ron.
Ron, I sure hope you find that deer, praying you do.
I would like to congratulate you on being a true sportsman by respecting boundaries and going about things in the right manner.
Sounds like she might be hit a little farther back maybe a little liver in the hit. Probably not a bad thing you let her lay down for awhile. Hope all goes well sounds like you will get her. Good luck Ron.
Good luck Ron
Its not even light out and I had to check back just to see. lol To me this anticipation is better than opening gifts at Christmas.
This is my day just before sunset on November 8 of this year.
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a74/rhallifax1/BobBowdoe11-09-141_zpsf6175d65.jpg) (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/rhallifax1/media/BobBowdoe11-09-141_zpsf6175d65.jpg.html)
Because of the dark blood, and cool weather, I waited until morning. Also, I could get my wife to help out in the morning of 11-09-2014.
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a74/rhallifax1/BobBowdoe11-09-145_zps59efd202.jpg) (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/rhallifax1/media/BobBowdoe11-09-145_zps59efd202.jpg.html)
Nice doe for the freezer. ... Turns out the arrowhead lodged in the off leg bone without puncturing the skin, and snapped off there. So, we didn't trail lung blood, even though she was a lung shot deer.
Come on Ron, we need an update!!!!!!!
Good luck Ron!
Well......the news is not good. 8 hours of rain last night did not help matters at all. Went with a friend for an extra set of eyes. Spent the better part of the morning picking up sign at the property line and moving forward. My worst fears were that it was a muscle or tissue hit above the lungs and now I think it was. Did a grid search for a 1/4 of a mile in the direction she had to go and came up with nothing. The field I thought she crossed had no tracks or blood anywhere....it's snow covered. So it looks like I may get to hunt her next year. Thanks for the positive thoughts and support......... :notworthy:
thats too bad ron. from your unfolding description it sounded like a muscle hit but didn' want to throw any negative waves your way.
fellas....Its looking like I might get an opportunity to hunt out in western ny next year, if all goes well. this will be through a friend of a friend so I'll be limited on access, but it will be fun I think.
I was just perusing the dec.NY.gov laws. I can't believe you still have to have your license pinned to your back? most states did away with that with the advent of online licensing....
anyway....anxiously awaiting 2015 :)
Bodaru that's nice doe !
Ron I was pulling for you sorry it didn't work out. They are tough critters and hopefully she's ok.
Last night walking out there were three small does in the clover. After sitting until sunset I was walking out and a big doe kinda stumbled/fell across the lane, by the time I pulled an arrow out she was in the pines. Then a nice buck came flying out of the pines ! I didn't think the doe could go far so i crawled around in the dark with a flashlight and couldn't find her. No blood but she was in bad shape not sure what happend to her.
Now the wait for next year starts ....
Sorry to hear that Ron , I was pullin for you .
Bob , congrats on your deer
That stinks Ron but it happens to most everyone sooner or later. Congratulations Bob, nice deer
Ron, I'm with Jim N.: That stinks. I hate the feeling. Hope the deer is okay... They heal up well.
My parting picture for the season:

Saw a monster buck a few days back, my last day out. That'll keep me excited for next year.
Thanks for the comments. And, Bob Brown, thanks for talking me into joining the NYS Bowhunters. It was thru them that I got to Africa this year... 2014 has been my best year ever.
I am sorry things did not work out as planned Ron. I do not know one bow hunter who hasn't been where you are now. We try our best, take responsibe shots in our ethical shot distances, and things still do not always go as planned Forge ahead Ron , it will happen.
Bobaru, congratulations on a fine deer.
For me, it is time for some small game hunting and stump shooting. Happy Holidays to all.
I'm ready for some stumps.........
Ron, I feel for you. We've all been there. You did all you could to recover her and more than likely she will survive.

Amen.
I feel your pain and hope it passes. Stump shooting is great therapy. Lord knows I have been there and done that.
When you said it was vivid red blood and started heavy and then slowed down. I was hoping for you but it sounded like a classic muscle hit. Don't be surprised if you meet up with her again.
Bummer Ron. I was feeling it was a muscle hit also. They heal from those pretty good. I hope she does also.
Congrats Bob, Fine Doe!
Traveled to Westchester County to hunt with good friend Greg and managed to fill my last tag on the last day of the season I will be able to hunt.

Congrats Terry
That's great terry congrats
congrats! I'll be hitting westchester county tomorrow and maybe later in the week.
Terry, it was great to get a chance to hunt with you and Tyler. I'm so excited you got on some deer, next time hopefully Tyler will get a crack at something.
Thanks again Greg! I guess it was Tyler's year to pay some dues. That kid is usually a deer magnet. He actually killed a deer once in a 200 acre bean field by climbing out of his ladder stand and walking out in the open toward the deer. It started to leave so he yelled at it. It stopped and walked toward him. He killed it at about 15 yards. Probably a 110" 8 point.
Congrats, nice deer!
Terry, that's just too funny. Yeah I guess it was his year for dues then.
