Title: Can't shoot without arrows
Post by: T Callahan on September 18, 2014, 11:02:00 PM
So I bought my first recurve today! Its 66amo and it draws 43# at 28inches. I'm drawing about 29 1/2.

SO now I need arrows and I don't have any local shops near me that sell trad arrows.. Any recommendations? Is there a sponsor on here that you use a lot?

Another question...carbon, aluminum or wood? Length and thickness?

I've been a stalker on here for a couple years gleaning all I can on how to build a bow but I have yet to do any real shooting so I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to arrows.

Thanks for any help or advice      :archer:

CALL big jim or any other trad sponsor on this site and you'll have some GT Trad blems or similar carbons fit to you/your bow by next weekend. Likely a 31" or full-length 15/35 or 35/55 spine, based on your point/adapter weights.

Have him install 4 or 5 inch feathers on at least 9 of them, leaving a few w/o to bareshaft tune to help you check your form, etc.  Get a dozen 50 and 100 grain brass inserts for them and a few different field tips weights to experiment with your tune, say 125 gr, 145, 175, 200 to start.

Get some Easton or similar hot melt glue, some saran wrap to help temporarily hold in your adaptors during tuning trial/error.  Then give one of your trad brothers a pm or call during the process to help.

Let us know...

I understand the pull to carbon is strong...for starting out I recommend aluminum to be easier to tune...my best guess for a starting point would be 2016

The truth is you are not going be able to tune until you have truly repeatable form anyway which is likely going to take a while...there is no birth without pain...start with some 2016's with about 150 grains up front and you will be fine for a long time...I have done lots of pretty good shooting with arrows that are not even close to the correct spine...love my 2317's

im with DDave, for me anyway,   aluminums are much easier to tune with

I would also say that you're missing the boat if you don't give some good WOOD arrows a try...if all you care about is lazerbeam consistency, then have at the carbons...but, if you seek more in your toxophilic missiles, you owe it to yourself to at least try wood at some point...

Life is too short to shoot detached/spiritless arrows...

Check out Lancaster Archery selling Easton Tributes fully fletched with 3" feathers for $5.84 each.  Buy 2 of each 2016, 1916s. add a few inserts and field points of different weights.
