Title: Bummed out in Utah
Post by: Oregon Okie on September 18, 2014, 10:29:00 PM
Utah archery has come and gone... And I'm just now feeling like fall is getting here. I saw animals but only heard one bugle the whole elk season. Just way too early for my taste. I'm practicing more and feeling like getting out more now than when I actually could hunt... Just venting on a weird season in Utah. Get to watch all you guys get going and I am still doing the extended deer season. Just wish I was out after elk now when they are heated up.

That is just one of the many reasons I quit hunting in Utah years ago.

Yep it was a quick early season. I hunted a tough unit this year never heard a bugle but only hunted a few days. We did get our opportunitys on a few bulls but it just wasn't in my cards this year.  I do miss the days in Utah when the elk hunt would go into late September.

Dang. Already over ? For all species ????  We open next weekend for 5 months.   I would go crazy I think , or move, that would be very tough on a weekend hunter.

Yes. Same here in colorado.  All species one month. Aaaaaannnnd.  Over. Pronghorn starts mid August so in reality we could hunt 6 weeks. But the western states are a bummer for bowhunting residence.

Can you use a bow during the general season?  Any late season opportunities?

Hi Russ. It has been in, or near, the 90's more this year than at any other time here in Oregon. Just doesn't feel like hunting weather. So this year I went over to the coast range where it is cooler than the east side. Lots of cat sign, very little elk sign in the drainage I was in. Saw cows in a "bull only" unit! haha  Now that the weather has turned a little cooler I think I'll head over to where you and I heard that ol' growler. This is the first year in a long time that our season goes to the end of Sept.

That's awful. I have been thinking of moving out west or going back to Ohio where I'm originally from. "Hate Florida." I don't think I could handle such a short bow season. Are all the western states like that?

Sorry to hear.  Why don't you do a "mock" hunt, without a weapon?  Just go out there and practice with the elk and see if you can get on within bow range.  That would be almost as much fun, at least to me.

Best of luck next year.

Your right Russ, but get your extended archery course done and head north. At least you can still hunt. Where there's a will....

Yeah, Just being whiny. I got out and had a few near opportunities but now that it is cooling off I'm "feeling it" more than before.
You are right Steadman... still got a chance on the extended and am determined to get something.

Hope you get into something Snag. I miss my Oregon crew.
Honestly can't complain. I can drive an hour (or less) and go see Elk if I want to. Like I said, just being a whiner.

No worries Russ! I'm going through my own inner demon fight as we speak! Our early season and low opportunities sure makes it hard. And I had to eat a WY elk tag too  :(
Get it off your chest, you'll feel better  :)
