Title: On average how many.

On average how many Deer do you take each year? Thought this would be kinda interesting.

Just enough for myself and my wife to eat. I used to kill many more while in college. I had more time to hunt and more people that would eat the meat. But these days 2 is great and 3 is plenty.

2 or 3.  Usually 2 is the norm

It has been directly related to where I have lived.
Maine = 1 every two years. NY = 7 (legally)each year and Ohio has been 2 each year

4-5 for my family of four. I try to fill those tags as quickly as possible when the season starts. Then I become a little more picky when the rut starts to kick in.

This will be my 34th year hunting and I have taken 41 deer in that time.  1-1/4 deer per year.

Lately one is enough for THE ADMIRAL and I - especially supplemented with the occasional spring lamb and our culled roosters.  I only pull out the flintlock if I didn't have a bow shot present itself.  If I do score with the bow I switch over to grouse hunting.  ;-)

This is depressing. I want to live in a state that I can hunt deer several months a year. Not elk for a few days.

With our family of 4 we eat a ton of venison. hope each year for 5-6 but end up usually around 4-5. That requires me to hunt more than one state to do on just my tags. Now that my kids hunt hopefully we can get 6-8. when i get 5 that lasts us until beginning of summer and we are empty.

2-3 as my daughter has a family now and they like deer meat as much as we do. Have to feed the grandsons well so they know what hunting is all about.

Assume you are talking with traditional bows correct?
If some of you are taking that many deer a year with traditional gear. You either are impressing the you know what outa me or you have very high populations/opportunities where you hunt.

With traditional gear here. I am lucky to get a shot at a deer inside the 20 yard mark in an entire season. If you are talking  deer in general. I shoot 1 every year, sometimes up to 3 with more advanced weapons.

3 a year lasts my family as my wife doesn't like wild game so I sneak it in as burger.  Two is the norm.

Geesh, some of you guys shoot more deer in a year than I might see in two weeks!

In the entire year of 2013 I saw one buck, and that was in July. I live in one of the parts of PA where our game commission saw fit to nearly eliminate our healthy herd. It seems they wanted to kill them off for their own good???????

I've killed six deer with a bow in 27 years. I finally got one last year after a 16 year drought.

My average is .22 deer/year.

I used to only hunt with the compound and 20-30 a year was common.  Now I shoot trad about half the time and usually take around 10. About half with the longbow.

I usually only get 1 or 2, but with the ammount of deer on post I'm open to taking more, I donate all the meat to needy families anyhow, (my wife can't eat it). This year DNR is pushing hunters to take doe (we can take 10 doe a year, 2 antlered QDMA size)so I would take as many up to 10 as I can get, hunting season is long here and I spend half my time in the woods anyhow.

I'm hearing ya brother. The opportunities these guys get or shots they get in a season must be staggering. We just do not have the opportunities. You guys are very lucky.

Normally 2 but this year My wife and I are trying to cut out hormone infested beef and GMO foods as much as possible, so I will be attempting to shoot 6 for us and our 4 kids. My oldest son normally takes 1 in youth/black powder season and my wife might try and shake the dust off and get one her self. So I guess we are going for about 8 total this year.

Living in NW PA means you can get a doe tag and a buck tag & maybe one for another management unit.  For most of my life you were allowed a "single" deer per year.  If I shot a doe in archery I was done hunting for the year.  Now I normally take my buck & doe.

Beastmaster & redshaft,  I hear both of you.  I've been fortunate enough to live in a county where I can fill both of my tags with my longbows and recurves but have friends who a deer every 3 or 4 years is about norm in their part of the state.  I can't imagine hunting where there are enough deer to take the numbers people are saying on here.  Maybe we appreciate the one we do take more, who knows.

I can generally get one deer and one turkey a year. Between myself and my dad we usually kill 3 of each combined. This year we have a new lease though so it could go either way.

I have harvested a moose six out of the last eight years.  We are allowed 3 blacktail deer apiece of either sex after November.  This may seem like a lot of meat for a family of three, but it is all we eat for meat.  Given a successful draw we have mixed caribou, dall sheep, mtn. goat and free range bison.  Then there's the fish and crab...Nevermind!  Each year we seem to make more and more burger, jerky and canned meat.  I can and do drive to the store for groceries, but not for their outrageously priced meat.  I read articles that say meat prices have skyrocketed nationwide.

Up here it's a lifestyle. I can't say we're the fanatical prepper types, but we do have volcanos, earthquakes, tsunamis and crazy weather that can cut you off the supply chain.  So it is the  sensible and responsible thing to have some level of preparedness.

I get a deer [1] every 3rd or 4th year.....sometimes. Last few have been with firearms. I bow hunt a lot more now and see more deer than ever. I no longer hunt in the Adirondacks and my deer encounters have been much better. Last year I missed a nice buck in Missouri and a doe in N.Y. with the bow. Last shot I had prior to that with a recurve was in 1971. Maybe this will be the year.....I can only hope......hey, I am not a quitter.

I take 1 anymore unless a needy family wants one. My wife is allergic to red meat now and boys moved away after they grew up, so don't require as much.

Does let me look at more deer and kind of pick and choose....

If I don't see several deer per day, I feel like I messed up somewhere. Some of you all have it rough.

PS- I live in  ummmmmm , I forgot!!  :D

The legal limit at my house is 30 deer, family of 5 with 3 hungry boys. We put 9 deer (3 trad) and 2 hogs in the freezer last year and are running low now. Usually run out of meat before season starts.

well, what are you calling average ?  Average over my life ?  Over all of my bowhunting years?  The last three years?  Or just last year ?   :jumper:

For a short time, my extended family refrains from eating deer meat so my wife and I can only go thru one a year.  No sense killing more.  Normally, the number would be one or two higher.

With my son off to college and a wife who does not eat venison I am down to 2 per year unless a real good buck presents then its fill the freezer. Used to be 4-5. If someone asks for deer meat then I will try for more. Lots of deer, a long season and liberal harvest policy by the state. I feel fortunate reading the posts from some of those up north.

I'm with you Pennsylvania hunters. It can be hard to get one shot per season. Buck or doe. Then again if you have some private property you might easily kill 2-3 a year. Personally I average about 1.5 per year. I'm not picky when hunting PA bucks. If it is a legal buck I'm going to try to shoot it! I have hunted 3 states in past years and once killed 5 deer in one year but that is rare for me.
I love the big woods hunting in northern PA but killing a buck is pretty tough.  I have had lucky years and lean years. My favorite hunts are public land in the mountains of PA.
I have also been lucky to experience Wyoming a few times where I saw over 100 deer per day and probably 40 buck. Last year I killed a Wyoming buck and Pennsylvania doe with a Black Widow recurve. Then a Pennsylvania mountain buck with a rifle.
Those 3 deer deer got used up surprisingly quickly. And it's just me, wife and daughter! My daughter ate deer of some kind almost every day during basketball season the last two years. Now she has a Division 1 scholarship to play basketball and she is lean and strong. I am on a mission to kill a deer and send her some canned or vacuum packed meals.

We are a 3 deer family...or 1 elk and 1 deer...plus usually a fall turkey for Thanksgiving. This year I am going moose hunting. I hope we will be a 1 moose and 1 deer family  :)  I killed 9 with my longbow one year between 2 states. We ate every ounce, sharing with my in laws and my mom. I won't do that again as the horshoe has been passed into someone else's arse...but I am going to try and can a whole deer this year for rainy days.
