Who is hunting with a primitive set up this year?
Post pics of your rig. :archer: Let's try and can keep this thread going all season long and post primitive kills here too.
I'll get mine up as soon as I get home :archer2:
:archer2:
Love to see the primitive setups! Look forward to this thread. :D
I'm giving it a shot this year. I will not be able to get any photos up until this weekend. It is going to make for a good time, deer or no deer. Everything is flying great though so if I can get a deer to cooperate during the few days that I am going to get to hunt it could happen.
I expected more responses? I, however, am not going primitive either regrettably...but feel I should, as I am passionate about the thought and do make selfbows. I may still but will start the season modern traditional.
I respect those that do primitive, with the utmost!
Kris
I'll get things started

What are you gonna call primitive ?

Good looking stuff Scott!
This is one of the bows I'll be hunting with this year. She is "Lil Thumper", sinew backed osage static recurve with a diamondback water snake skin cover, 56" t/t, 56#@26".

Here are 3 hill cane arrows with two fletch, 2 traditional and one modern with my burn pattern, and stone points hafted with pitch glue and sinew. Fetching tied on with sinew and all sinew wraps waterproofed with pitch varnish.

I'll also be hunting with this bow. She's also sinew backed osage, 53" t/t, 56#@26". I used a coachwhip snake skin to cover the sinew.
Gary Davis gave me this "kids" bow stave(marked 35#) at the Tenn. Classic a few years ago and said, "Lets see what you can do with this". :D
The arrows are poplar shafts I got from Charlie Jefferson(stringstretcher).

These arrows aren't very primitive but do have self nocks. One(not shown) I've added a homemade trade point made from a heavy bandsaw blade.

I am going to give it a go. Just putting the final finish coats on my osage, 60", 38# longbow. Made the arrow shafts out of pine, maple and cherry. Using feathers from turkeys and geese shot here in Michigan and stone points.

If you think it's primitive post it. There's no primitive police here just a fun thread.
Pat those setups are really nice. I love the eastern two fletch it is simply awesome. The osage stave in my post is from Gary too. Although I didn't take a kids stave and turn it into a 56# hunting bow. That takes some serious skill :clapper:
I always do but mix it with my other bows I take them all out at different times depending on mood
I shoot wood arrows but not made up with selfnocks or flint heads. I do hunt with bows I make. This years bow is an osage static, 64", between 55# and 60# at this point(still being shot in).
The fuzzy picture is of me and the bow at the Russ Dixon shoot at the Briarfield Iron Works. The way this bow shot at the tournament quickly made it my first choice for the upcoming bow season.

1970's is about as primitive as I get; but I get the attraction and I take my hat off to you. Love those stone points.
I make it all but the knapped points. I don't knap but have many friends that do so I trade for points and blades. I understand knapping and have read and studied it for years but I don't need another hobby. If I had to knap a point for emergency use I know I could.
I'm going primitive, but I've been sick in bed and haven't finished my setup. I'll get some pictures up in a day or two. I wish I could knap like you guys, mine is only just barely serviceable, hence my use of bone points.

First one on far left Nutterbutter blackwalnut backed with hickory will be going. Also third on right Little Hick stick, hickory board bow backed with goat rawhide. And I will also have along Death in the fall, a osage billet bow backed with rawhide

Arrows are hardwood footed poplar with homemade 3:1 tradepoints like the ones below. This antelope was last season not this season.

Jack,nice bows yours,I can't to try one!
Cacciatore I will be heading out for 10 days either Thursday night or Friday. I will be back at the end of the month. If you are still in Cheyenne, I will let you fling an arrow out of some of my selfbows. Wont be near as sweet shooting as some of your collection I am sure. By the way I enjoyed talking with you and your friend Gary the other night. Being from a house full of estrogen it was nice to talk archery, bowhunting and life. Thanks and hope to see you before you head back to Italy.
Ok, this is my setup this year. The bow is a Ted Fry selfbow, osage 58" 55# at 27". The cane arrows and obsidian points are from Ryan Gill. The arrows are two fletched and fly great. Wish I had the skill to make my own. Maybe someday.

Thanks,
Awesome, congrats Tim! Nice looking bunch of bows Jack!
I'm hoping to do a deer hunt with at lease a self bow this December. I probably will not have time for self arrows and napped heads this year but some day.

I'm going to give it my best effort this year with my first selfbow. I built it for my spring bear hunt, but I reckon it'll do well enough on deer too!
A friend's brother made his own bow, shot a bird and made fletching out of the feathers, AND knapped some heads out of the bottom of a glass beer bottle. Last year he went out and killed a cow elk with this setup. He hunts in must a leather loin cloth...no pictures!!! haha
I might for part of the season. I have a 55# Osage self bow I made that I am considering - but got a 52# snake backed Osage bow at the Marshall Primitive Archery Rendezvous in May. Built by CK??? I have a couple flint tipped ash arrows already made up and need to haft a few more for the quiver. I will post pics if I get them all in one place. :)
:archer:
I'm primitive this year... made the arrows not The bow... yet :)

I was going to use this stick only but other stuff got in the way (new bows) But they are out of my system now so It will be this one for awhile any way.
What...No loin cloth pics? Well, maybe that would be hard on the eyes and a bit toooo primitive.

Sinew backed osage recurve, watersnake backing, cane arrows with stone heads, obsidian knife, neck knife, coyote quiver, Asbell wool top, wool bottoms, wool crusher hat. Kill or not, I'll look dam good doing it!
Wow... Lol awesome john! Love the quiver... Well actually all of it! Well done sir :)
I made the bow but almost all the other stuff, except the wool was acquired in trade here on Tradgang or on the Stickbow ***********.
Gonna try my new Gill selfie during early season,....but....likely to break out the Javaman or Shrew for the rut just to be on the safe side. (http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k640/lmyers2/20140525_122304.jpg)
I really like Ryan's bows... He does a class I've considered... Its just a little ways from NY.

Scott, thats the way to start! Great shot and hunt for ya!
Scott, those heads are flawless..did you knap them?
John, you a beek as well?
I saved and have dried some more moose sinew from this year (friends bull). Should have more than enough to back a stave you sent me um...awhile ago now ;) .
Obsidian was me the chert was done by my buddy Ryan Gill
great looking heads!
Try to keep this one alive. No elk again this year but I did make meat with death in the fall, rawhide backed osage.

Nice one! :archer2:
That's a pretty bird, Jack! Good shootin!
Pretty nice looking bow and footed arrow, too.
Thanks guys it was about 12yds and 12 feet high in old snag. It was last day of hunt and I figured no guts no glory used a hardwood footed poplar shaft with homemade broad head like the one in photo. I had lost my judo point shaft earlier in the day on a just missed shot on another bird, I had some feathers fly off bird but no bird and lost arrow. So used broad head shaft that I had carried all week. The birds and elk liked this drainage.

One more for you. My Antelope blind and gear including goat rawhide backed hickory board bow.

The Bow Builders Book? Never seen that one before Jack? More info please.
It is a European book that was translated into English. It is European bows from Neolithic to present, with several authors. It is a pretty cool book have only made it thru couple of chapters. Very informative. I got it at a Woodcrafters store in Loveland CO., of all places. Also found the BBIV there as well.
Im gonna try this year. Im shooting an osage selfbow I made 60 lb at 28, with a deer hide quiver I made from my 1st traditional kill. My arrows are wood but I bought spine and weight matched shafts and I'm shooting steel grizzly heads. So arrows aren't super primitive. The fletchings are turkey wing feathers from turkey's I killed tho.

Thanks Jack! I will have to check to get a copy. Sounds like a pretty cool read.
Cool setup, Rau! Good shootin to ya!
