Title: Let's see those ground harvested Whitetail
Post by: perry f. on September 14, 2014, 10:12:00 PM
Going after whitetail again this year. Not using a commercial blind, just a good back cover and perhaps a little cover in front too. I would like to see some pics of ground harvested whitetails

Sorry to be off topic, but where did you get that flannel meathead?!
I always have a hard time finding that camel color, and I find it too be the best "camo".

2013...7 yards on the ground. Didn't think I could draw until he turned and looked away and behind him at a 2nd buck he traveled with all summer.

2012 shot at 10 yards in a goldenrod field.
2011 was my first traditional harvest, it was the smallest legal spike ever, shot a 15 yards on the ground.

Made a rub facing me at 6 yds.  I was hunkered down low. He turned to look at some does. . . I rose up on my knees fully drawn.  Zap.

I shot this guy at 10  yards while still hunting a creek bottom behind the house.  He was my first trad buck on the ground.   (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/129269780394206080_zps23127f79.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/129269780394206080_zps23127f79.jpg.html)
two years later I shot this buck at 20 yards  still hunting in the same area.  Some spots are just AWESOME!

The last one was some time ago. Took him just as soon as he won a brawl with another buck. Shot over the Doe's back and took him quartering too. 400 yards tracking job through the junk. I have never taken a shot like that since. I just got caught up in the moment.

Well, wind shifted about 30 minutes before end of day and that shift might have cost a buck from on the ground.  Couldn't see it well enough at about 45 yards and coming, but lots of white tops to it.  Instead of coming straight, he cut across behind and hit the scent stream.  Dang it all.

Try try again

My second trad kill and my only one from the ground.  Was in a blind with my son Nathan.  I missed the first doe at 25 yards... much to Nate's disappointment... which he expressed with an "aw Dad!"  Luckily a second doe followed and while it wasn't the best placed arrow she didn't last long with a severed windpipe!

I have posted this picture so many times people are probably tired of it.

8 point, my biggest buck to date, out of a natural material ground blind placed in a funnel in a tight, steep sided hollow.

7 yard shot with an osage selfbow I made, chundo arrow with Zwicky delta head, 100 yard recovery.

Just killed a nice fat doe this evening, from the ground, natural hide, 6 paces.

Double lung pass thru, she ran about 80 yards and was down in less than 10 seconds,  Heard her go down.

Pics later, I am tired.

I learned on the drag out. .  I am getting old.

Having some issues getting the picture downloaded.  The one on the camera turned out blurry.  The one on the cell phone turned out nice, but I have no idea how to download from that.

I have hunted this area a bunch over the years.  A public land spot, much of the property is seasonal marsh.  I like the marsh, mainly cause nobody else seems to.

This spot is a meadow of probably ten acres, surrounded by wetter areas.  The meadow is filled with nettles maybe 5-6 feet tall.  The deer seem to love it.

At one corner, there is a funnel, where they tend to come out, cross over a dam ( drainage ditch runs the length of this and more property) and into the uplands, full of acorns and hickory trees.

I got in the stand early, about 4 oclock.  The stand was essentially a nest in the tall grass, next to a small almost dead tree on my left.  In front of me, maybe 6 feet or so, is a small tree that blew down several years ago, no leaves, but it tends to hold the grass that grows thru it upright.  Front wall of my blind !

It is very thick, and trails change a bit each year, but this year, the main trail runs from north to south about 6 paces in front (west) of me, another trail, running thru a wet alley of sorts runs about ten yards behind me.

A few days ago, I had a buck walking this same trail, but cut across to the alley about 40 yards away, and the squirrely wind gave me away.

Last night, the wind held OK and at 25 minutes before the end of the day, here comes this doe and a large fawn.  Doe in the lead.

I started to draw (Hill style bow I built, with heavy duty velcro rug) and she actually heard the rubbing of the wood arrow on the rug and stopped, earls like radars.  Maybe 7 paces away.

She took a few more steps, stopped broadside and looked around.  Going thru my mind. . .  dang it, you're TOO close.  Then she turned her head to look over the field and away from me.

I made the shot, high double lung and a pass thru of the arrow.  She turned and ran about 80 yards, into the thick stuff, where I heard her fall and thrash a moment,  That was it, no more than 6-7 seconds and she was done.

Trail was pretty easy, drag was not, coming out of the marsh in the dark.

Nice job. .

I guess this post, like the original Pope and Young club, shows that it can be done, it isn't a fluke.

So the challenge to you is. . .  try it, learn it. . do it !

Have a great hunt

Shot this one while still hunting. To be honest it was more the rut that got him into trouble than my stalking ability.

2009  The story is here on tradgang. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Sorry but I can not seem to figure out how to go back that far. I don't remember the title of the thread.

The rut was a primary cause for the demise of this deer as well.

8 point, my biggest buck to date, out of a natural material ground blind placed in a funnel in a tight, steep sided hollow.

7 yard shot with an osage selfbow I made, chundo arrow with Zwicky delta head, 100 yard recovery.

Great photo! I sold my stands over 7 years ago, hunted on the ground 90% of the time anyway.
I've got my son's climber I am planning to use but this thread may change my mind. LOL
Eric, I see I'm not the only ground hunter from the deep south...dont see many ground hunters down here.

Its been a few years...but feel like Eric earlier.... I am almost too tired to post this anymore

But my greatest memory, my most treasured deer... Was this lil yearling on the ground, using a Torges tree seat... on public land at 5yds at the most... a perfect shot... It jumped to within 3 yds of me after impact... then it went and smelled, then licked the arrow sticking in the dirt.. then turned and walked off.. I had arrow no 2 on the string and Momma froze behind a tree while I was at half draw when it fell... 15 yds later!!! So my almost double... Just needed her to take one more step...

No blind.. no Ghillie... Mossy oak spring turkey camo on the ground with  just standing behind a oak... and the Good Lord shining on me that day!!!!
