Title: Make old nocks smell better ??
Post by: Tyler C. Moore on September 07, 2014, 04:53:00 PM
Does anyone have any tips to make old nocks smell better. I have a bunch from the 70's that just smell awful. Haven't had any luck with washing them.

If they're stinking I wouldn't trust them. I'd be afraid of them breaking on release-Hap

I have an idea it's the same material used as some screwdrivers have and when you open your tool box to retrieve one you get this wiff of what smells like vomit or something?
Maybe you can get some cedar shavings and put them in a sealed bag or better yet if someone you know has a vacuum sealer put them in the bag with the shavings and seal tight and let them lay in there a few weeks or so..I think that material they used was called "Delrin" not sure I spelled it correctly but when over heated when molding in an injection mold machine the fumes from the gas vent would bring tears to your eyes quickly and very toxic fumes you didn't want to inhale when over heated...
I think the nocks are o.k. to still use they just stink but I would first try a bag of cedar shavings and just keep them in there until you are ready to make up your arrows...

Vintage nocks smell like dirty vintage socks. It must be something in the plastic.

Ditch them. They become brittle and will cost you a dry fire eventually. Nocks are cheap.

This...100%. Don't risk a good bow over questionable nocks....

I have a box of assorted nocks from the early 90's that smelled bad. They are brittle , throw them away. Ask me how I know.

it might be made of a celluloid instead of plastic, a lot of vintage stuff has that smell and it is likely celluloid, I have had good luck putting it in a bag with baking soda till the smell diminishes.  It won't go away.  But it will make it bearable.  I collect fountain pens and all of the celluloid pens smell off.
