I purchased a John McDonald custom bow that was already made for somebody else 48 @ 28", I thought that I could make it work my draw length is 29 1/2 in., it's a really nice bow, but it just doesn't work for me so I put up for sale on the site in traditional bows, I have a couple of questions;
I was looking to get maybe a black widow longbow in my draw length at 40 lbs. any suggestions on it. Will it be right at 40 and right at 29 1/2?
I was also looking at Tomahawk Bows, does anyone have the advice on these particular bows I was thinking of doing a takedown in the diamond series of I was wondering if they are smooth and straight shooters. If anyone has any advice on this or if you do have a Tomahawk could you let me know how it is for you. The only reason I picked out black widow is because I saw how all the people that have them enjoy them a lot.
I have been struggling with my longbow being the wrong size and over the poundage I want to pull.

After breaking a bow that was too small.....
We all like different stuff, and I hope that research has led you to your choices, but have you looked into CheckMate? LBR here is a rep of them (Recurves.com). I got a custom for my draw (bow is 56#@32") and it is one nice bow. Modest price and 6 months, but worth every $$ and every minute. Talk with Chad.

I'm fascinated by short bows myself ,dont know what it is about them but have been resisting the urge for a too short for my drawlength bow for 30 years . I figure I'm 71 inches tall 29 " draw and can get through the bush no problem and for myself find hunting bows as long as 68" no disadvantage , I just practice shooting from difficult positions . A longer bow is smoother to draw and more forgiving therefore more accurate . I feel 62" in a recurve is a good minimum length in a longer draw and 66" for a longbow . regards Jacko
Unless you order (and pay) otherwise, BW draw weights are +/- 2 lbs. A rule of thumb is that draw weight changes 2 or 3 lbs. per inch so at your length you would need 36# or so at 28" to get 40# at 29 1/2" but it might be tough to find a used bow like that. If you buy a new custom bow you can order most any weight and length you want.
I would order a Widow if that is what ya really want and tel lthem at least 40#s at 29.5"s that way it may be 40,41,42 or so but it should not be light that way and they probably will not charge ya, if ya want on the money they will charge ya. Shawn
I'm having a hard time with the price of the BW, but if you want quality, and exactly what you want, he have to pay.
How was hoping someone could give me information on the Tomahawk, three Rivers sells it in. But I think I will make sure when I do my next bow.

Very nice bows, but if ya do not want to spend a lot look at the classifieds for something that fits you. 29.5"s is not overly long of a draw and most longbows that are 62"s will work for that draw. If ya want 40#s than look for a bow that is around 35-36#s at 28"s. Lots of nice used bows out there at 1/2 of what a new one costs! Shawn
I've shot several Tomahawks (owned one for awhile)and found them to be very smooth though the grip is not my style. I'm more comfortable with a a recurve style grip. I believe that the Tomahawks are made by Great Plains for sale by 3 Rivers.
Broken take a look at Turkey creek bows they are a sponsor here. They may have something in stock to fit ya and they are very nice bows, very quick and quiet, but have a small grip, which a lot of folks like! Shawn
The Tomahawk bow are hard to beat. I personally like them better than the BW.

i've got a tomahawk diamond ss. i like it very much. smooth, quiet and fast
I have a diamond ss 62" that I dearly love, my only problem was the grip. I added a rubber grip cover and made a shelf mold of my thumb that goes on the right side of the grip so I get the most positive and consistant grip placement possible. Shoots straight, quiet and deadly silent.
That's the problem, it's tempting, they have one, and its 40 lbs. at 29, in the stock, and then they even hurt me more by saying they can be here in three days.
What's an Archer to do !
It's a Diamond SS 62 in.
